Kidnapping a judge is never a good idea. Attorney General Jim Hood issued the following statement:
Guntown Man Sentenced in Conspiracy to Kidnap a Circuit Court Judge
JACKSON—
Attorney General Jim Hood announced today that a Guntown man has been
sentenced for conspiracy to kidnap Lee County Circuit Court Judge Paul
S. Funderburk of the First
Circuit Judicial District. The defendant was also sentenced for
conspiracy to burglarize the home of Judge Funderburk.
Matthew Fowler, 28, of Guntown, pleaded guilty Tuesday in Lee County Circuit Court before Special Circuit Judge Betty Sanders to one count of conspiracy for kidnapping and one count
of conspiracy to commit house burglary. Fowler also pleaded guilty to possession of a controlled substance .
On
January 30, 2016, Fowler conspired with two other people to kidnap
Judge Funderburk and burglarize his home. The three men were arrested
February 1, 2016. Judge Sanders sentenced
Fowler to a total of 10 years, with five of those years suspended,
leaving five to serve, followed by five years of post-release
supervision. Judge Sanders sentenced Fowler to serve three years for
possession of a controlled substance, which will run concurrently
to the conspiracy charges. He was also ordered to pay $500 to the
Mississippi Crime Victims Compensation Fund.
The investigation was conducted by the Lee County Sheriff’s Office and prosecuted by Assistant Attorney General Stan Alexander. The Attorney General’s Office handled the prosecution at the request of the district attorney who recused as a result of a conflict.

He is sentenced fifteen months after the crime. Mississippi justice is swift.
Herr Weill should take note of this case. This is what a real crime against a judge looks like.
