Hinds County Republican Party Executive Committee Chairman Pete Perry issued the following press release:
HINDS COUNTY
REPUBLICAN PARTY TO SPONSOR DEBATE
FOR
REPUBLICAN CANDIDATES IN WARD 1 CITY COUNCIL ELECTION
JACKSON- The Hinds County Republican Party announced today a debate incorporating a new “chess-clock format” to be held among the four Republican candidates for the Ward 1 City Council position. The debate will be held at Bellwether Church beginning at 6:00 on Tuesday, November 25th - one week prior to the December 2nd special election. The Republican candidates – Charles Barbour, Ashby Foote, Richard Sellers, and Amile Wilson – have all accepted their invitation to participate.
“Over
the past few years people throughout the county have expressed frustration with
the debate formats that have historically been used. According to various studies,
voters would prefer something closer to a Lincoln-Douglas debate with less
intrusion from the moderator, more flexible time limits allowing for deeper
analysis and clearer comparisons and contrasts between or among positions and
possible cross-examination between candidates.
“We
are hoping to help develop some new approaches with the format to be used on
Tuesday” said Pete Perry, Chairman of the local county Republican Party as he
outlined the details. “Each candidate
will be allocated a block of time to be used as the candidate sees fit on each
question. Candidates will be responsible for managing their total allotted time
throughout the questioning.
“We
believe that this format will allow candidates a better opportunity to express
themselves on the issues to the degree that they deem them important. Allowing candidates to question ideas offered
by others should allow for a more informative discussion” said Perry.
”We
greatly appreciate Bellwether’s assistance as we put together this opportunity
for the voters of Ward One to hear our Republican candidates’ positions on
issues important to all the citizens of Jackson. Located at the corner of Northside Drive and
Old Canton Road, Bellwether Church has become an integral part of the Northeast
Jackson neighborhood and their graciously allowing us to use their fine
facilities offers a convenient and comfortable setting for our event” noted
Perry as he encouraged anyone interested in Jackson’s future to attend and
learn more about the Republican candidates.

Why isn't Dorsey invited? Scared of him?
What's the matter, dummy. Can't read or can't think? Dorsey is a Democrat. So is Higgenbottom. This is a Republican debate. If the Democrats want to have a debate among their members, they can have on with Dorsey and Higgenbottom and not invite the Repubs.
What's the problem with that?
Because he is a Democrat. Why else would he have donated to the Obama campaign?
Core values matter. As a voter in Ward 1, if you agree with a liberal or even moderate Democrat style platform then vote for Dorsey. However, if you believe in a conservative, mainstream Republican platform then vote for one of the Republican candidates.
While the newly elected member of the council will represent one vote and one viewpoint, I would rather it be a true conservative viewpoint. Sorry but Dorsey is not that person and his actions and associations prove that.
This is race baitin' vote buyin' drunk drivin' Pete's way to make the special election about partisanship rather than about moving Jackson forward.
The Republicrats are scared as hell that when the smoke clears the runoff will be Dorsey Carson who has bi-partisan support versus the highly flawed and very unpopular Charles Barbour.
So since they can't have a primary Pete needs a last ditch effort to damage Barbour in the eyes of Ward 1 Republicrat voters.
Why isn't Dorsey invited? Scared of him?
5:33 PM is the sound of Republicans gasping for air as Ward 1's population turns more Democrat with each passing day.
Hey 6:08 you think that is funny? That sound is Jackson's tax base leaving. You are obviously an idiot!
7:22. There you go again. Keep trying to convince all of us that like it here are miserable really. Eat shit. I like my city. Go kick your dog.... Or your wife. We are happy here. Deal with it.
8pm is the pride of Jackson! I live in Jackson by choice and I wish you would move out of Jackson. I think Kenny Stokes can get you a good deal on a fixer upper in Byram.
As you strut around with your stupid idea of what Jackson should be, good taxpayers are steadily relocating to the suburbs. But to you a political shift is worth all that. Who is gonna pull the wagon when all the WHITE republicans move out? I guess you and Kenny will get to the bottom of it.
Let me guess that this sensible response will once again be followed by your uneducated drivel!
My NEJackson neighborhood is in a state of decay and infrastructure collapse after decades of being represented by "conservative, mainstream Republican" Councilmen with "true conservative viewpoints". "Core values" haven't improved things one iota.
Well 9:36 and 9:39 move and pat yourselves on the back for just that. Why do you obsess on the fact that I and many others like Jackson and want to WANT TO live here? Why do you obsess on wanting me to not love Jackson? Why do you obsess on my happiness here? Insecure??
Why do you dwell on it? I am happy. Why aren't you? I hope you love your town. Town.
all the throwing of stones sounds like the queen of an artsy birdcage liner ....
.....this republican thinks Dorsey with his biz skills and already established friendships downtown will be more effective...
...now, all you mud slingers...your turn!
11:25 - yes, Dorsey's 'biz skills' will bring his business buddies Rudy Warnock and Elvis straight into City Hall from Madison. Then we can get us million dollar 'studies' for new airports, other million dollar attempts at new landfills, etc. Rudy and his buds will do great with Dorsey's 'biz skills'. Dorsey and his good "Democratic Trust" group will certainly lead Jackson out of our problems. Glad you support him. Myself, I want anything but the Obama concepts of Dorsey.
9:39 - good 'core value' republican COUNCILMEN don't control what happens in Jackson in our current state. But they at least put a voice of reason in City Hall. Do you realize that city government consists of seven councilpeople and a mayor. Lately, only one of those 8 folks are "good, 'core value' Republican Councilmen". Please tell me how you can blame the situation in your neighborhood on whichever of your past councilpersons you want to point the finger at.
I do think it at least helpful that we have one or two voices of reason on the Council. Just because the Democrats on the council are all either idiots or crooks doesn't mean we ought to throw up our last bastion of hope to them as well.
The lone Republican voices of reason haven't gotten our pipes fixed, our streets paved nor stopped our falling property values.
If they aren't accountable then they are mute and if they are mute they are completely useless.
Enjoy your bullshit 'core values' while you pay the bill to have your front-end aligned, again.
6:36 apparently doesn't understand that the NE Jxn councilman has one vote, and the crummy parts of Jackson have 6 votes, and you need at least 4 votes to pass any laws in Jxn.
Failure to improve things is not due to lack of effort, just math.
Please tell me I'm not the only one who thinks all these Jackson vs. wherever debates are stupid and get pretty tiring reading about them once a week.
I'm pretty sure most people live where they live because they like it and believe it is best for themselves and their family, regardless of what someone commenting on a blog says.
Is does not matter one bit who is elected to this post. Vote for Charles because he will make fun to watch and he need the work..
Please tell me I'm not the only one who thinks all these Jackson vs. wherever debates are stupid and get pretty tiring reading about them once a week.
Nobody forces you to read anything here.
Bellwether has agreed to let me speak beforehand, so any interested voters will find me answering questions from 5-6 p.m. At 6 p.m., our campaign will be at the former Colonial Country Club to discuss our plans for a magnet middle school, so Pete, you can save the postage on my lost invitation.
Sounds like Dorsey is a little butt-hurt over being exposed. Take your liberal trash to fondren.
YO! Dorsey! Would you please be so kind as to ACCURATELY reveal just how much money you gave to obama in the past 10 years? Including but not limited to personal money money, PAC money and OPM donations. (Other Peoples Money) One of your opponents says the figure is huge?
Ward 1's shrinking enclave of white establishment Republicrats is very, very worried.
For political analyst types, this election may actually be a good pilot for a Louisiana-style open primary. Interesting questions include: role of parties in debates, campaigning, roles of party factions in determining preferred candidates, crossover voting characteristics, etc.
Dorsey, you cannot be upset by this. Political parties have their own debates for their candidates. You are a member of the State Democratic Executive Committee. Why would you feel that you should be included in a GOP debate?
Certainly you knew these were legit questions you would have to deal with in this election.
Where does Dorsey say he was upset?
Get over yourself.
Dorsey said he was 'upset' when he called the church and cried about not being included. Tried to get permission to speak to the crowd immediately following the republican debate. When reality set in, he talked them into 'being fair' - you know, the democratic concept of fairness - and letting him have a meet-and-greet at the church before the republican event.
Just because he didn't say "upset" or do it on JJ, his actions speak loud enough. He is upset that this event shows up his telling the republican voters in NE Jackson one thing while telling his democratic allies something else.
Voters interested in this election should start listening to black radio in Jackson. Dorsey has been on there as a regular guest, and he certainly isn't saying the same thing as he tells voters while knocking on doors.
God forbid that someone running for office in Ward 1 speak with potential voters on "black radio" because we all know there are no blacks in Ward 1.
Get your robe on 12:46 PM and go burn a cross on Carson's lawn.
1:13 PM. Don't be a moron. No one cares that he's on black radio. What matters is that he tells them his hero is Obama then runs to Broadstreet to say he wants to be a leader like Reagan.
Even liberals should avoid the liar.
What matters is that he tells them his hero is Obama ...
Prove it. Put up little man.
For a bunch of folks who don't seem worried about Dorsey, y'all seem to spend a lot more time worried about him and worrying about yard signs. Haven't heard much about what these so-called GOP candidates are going to do about schools and development.
1:13 - ain't no robe here. My message was only that Dorsey tells different voting groups different things. My comments said that voters should listen to black radio to see the side of Dorsey that he is not presenting while knocking on doors in Heatherwood or Country Club.
Two-faced politicans are the worst kind. And Dorsey has been very adept at having two opposite faces.
Dorsey, didn't you get the memo? You aren't allowed to use radio to reach black Democrats. That is the sole domain of Henry and Austin. They need those airwaves to warn the natives that only big brother Chuckie can save Jackson from the three Klukkers Ashby, Richard and Amile. So back off Dorsey and leave the race baitin' and vote buyin' (and in Pete's case the drunk drivin') to the real professionals.
2:32 pm - Then you clearly haven't been listening.
If someone hasn't already clarified it, Dorsey was at the former Colonial Country Club holding a meeting about the future of the property since it's since been sold and bought by new owners who want to rezone the land for mixed-use purposes.
I truly wish Mr. Carson would have been invited. I had plans to ask him in person to have his staff to please stop putting signs in my yard. It has been done 2 times now with out my permission. The next time a cream colored Chrysler with big shiny wheels comes near my home I am calling the police dept.
Then do it. Call the cops and stop flapping your gums about it.
Did anyone go to this debate and can report on it? Who did what, said what etc.
Sparsely attended. 30-35 people but 50% of the attendees were candidates' family and friends. Nothing new at all discussed. Pete Perry appeared to be sober. Waste of time.
Richard and Ashby will be the front-runners...Barbour will be tied for last with the Democrat.
