JA actually started in 1959 as Burress Academy, though I may not have that spelling right. Mr. Burress was headmaster and the school was started by a group of parents who wanted their children taught to read using phonics vs. some other method JPS had switched to. While there nothing racial about this move given that white and black schools were "separate but equal" (sic), the junior high and high schools weren't added until the 1970s when overnight Prep and Council Schools popped up and there was a whole new market out there.

Finally, let's remember that not all the protesters in Ferguson are black. There are plenty of whites out too, just as there are in Jackson

5:18...if they were cops there would still be no national media coverage. The point here is that it is the lack of personal responsibility being taught to young blacks. My question here is where were Brown's parents before he was killed. They obviously we're not teaching him not to steal, to respect the authority of law enforcement. Ultimately in this case one person is to blame for Micheal Brown's death and that's Micheal Brown. His decisions lead to his death.

It's easy to blame parents for a teen's misbehavior. I don't pretend to know how Michael Brown's parents raised him., but I have enough experience to know it isn't always the parents who are to blame. Through painful experience I am all too aware of situations where parents have done everything possible, but the child still makes bad choices, gets Involved with the wrong friends, etc., and ends upon trouble with the law. Sometimes there are mental health issues involved that complicate matters greatly. I have learned not to judge parents for their teen's bad behavior without knowing a lot more about the circumstances. There is a lot of bad parenting out there. It isn't limited to poor blacks. But it isn't always the fault of the parents. Therefore I don't presume that the Browns were bad parents because their son committed a crime or crimes. That is a different issue from whether the policeman should have been indicted. I think the grand jury got it right.

Bearss Academy and JA have zero in common. JA was founded in 1959, Bearss Academy was still operating into the 1990's. Mr. & Mrs. Bearss divorced, then retired and sold the school to a group of parents who then ran the facilities as an after school program.

You guys Brown Vs Board happened in 1954.... it just took the MS public school system 16 years and they were finally forced to integrate in 1970-71. I'm pretty sure people knew eventually this would hit integration would happen in MS when it was deemed unconstitutional in '54, not saying that's what happened to JA but its plausible that it was founded on simple preventative strategy. St. Andrew's has admitted blacks since the 60's before integration was technically legal in MS (not that that makes a difference it was just a little visual.)

Loyal Myron Bearss was the founding headmaster of Jackson Academy and served in that role until 1966. He also was headmaster when JA moved to it's current location, but JA was actually founded in a house on Northview Dr.
