A reader just sent me this email about her Clarion-Ledger subscription:
The Clarion-Ledger just increased its home delivery subscription by 33.3% or $24 to $32 - at least in southwest Mississippi. This amounts to a 100% increase in the last few years. There was no notice to subscribers or a story in the paper to the best of my knowledge.
I do not know of another industry or product that has increased by that much in that time frame.
The website states subscription rates for seven-day delivery of the print edition is $24.

we cut our subscription due to rate increases recnetly, but I will say the paper has gotten better with more interesting content lately.
What has the CL got to offer?? Internet subscriptions are $10. monthly, and I won't even take that. You can read the obituaries for free. Get the news that's fit to print from JJ and the TV stations. WLOX on the coast is a good feed for South Ms.
Hey, it takes a lot of money to cover high school football 24/7/365.
Plus they gotta pay for them dinners for Bill Minor and Jerry Mitchell.
No, remember Gannett kept the broadcast, cars.com, career builder and all the other good stuff and sent publishing down the river. They are now with the yoyo plan "you are on your own".
Gannett as I understand it also kept all the cash from publishing too. Only time will tell about the quality of content going forward. That is if there is a going forward to see.
I blame Gannett for the lack of accountability in local and state governments. So far I'm holding on to our subscription home delivery, but I do not read the USA at all. Not interested in their generic news. Anything interesting will show up on FB or JJ. As far as percent of increase, maybe you could compare to Comcast.
What did they do with all of the money made by getting rid of Orley?
Hardly any obits anyone,it's too expensive.
If you read the C/L only,there isn't a crime problem in Jackson except J. Mitchell's 50 year-old ones.
Milk, bacon and many other products have had much greater increases and they don't publish announcements about it either. They have some good writers working for them right now. Emily le Coz has produced some outstanding reporting.
None of those products have increased 100% in the last three years. The C-L was charging $16 per month 3 - 4 years ago. Gas prices are roughly the same as they were then. C-L reporters are substandard compared to the big-city dailies.
Milk prices haven't doubled in 3 - 4 years. It sells for $4 per gallon now - no way it was $2 in 2010 - 2011.
yet another reminder as to why I dumped the clarion ledger years ago. In all fairness my parrot really misses it.
As I once patiently explained to the C-L publisher, they may have to sell papers, but I don't have to buy them. That's the nice thing about newspapers.
The CL has become one of the worse papers I have ever read. Notice I did not say newspapers, as there is very little news in the CL these days. It has been over a week and there has been nothing in the CL about Mayor Yarber's shafting of the minimum wage city workers. It used to be I watched TV news for the headlines and read the newspaper for in depth reporting. Now I know if I do not watch the local news I will not know what is going on in greater Jackson and the rest of the state. If the paper increases the subscription rates a lot of people will no longer take this sorry excuse for a newspaper.
I was going to cash in some miles for Thursday and Sunday delivery for three months (coupons plus the black friday sales papers...that's all the CL is worth to me). Looks like they don't offer subscriptions through miles programs anymore, so I am done with the CL.
The same thing has happened to the Hattiesburg American (also Gannett owned, printed now at the C-L and trucked to Hattiesburg every day). Not worth reading and most days as thin as a paper towel.
Like the Northside Sun in the Jackson market, Wyatt Emmerich's weekly newspaper, Hattiesburg Post (along with sister publications Lamar Times and Petal News) offer readers local news that used to be available in the HA. I imagine those newspapers are running most of the legal notices now at a much reduced rate than Gannett papers are required to charge.
I e-mailed the new publisher of the C-L for an explanation of the increase. So far, no response. Leslie NEVER returned e-mails so I doubt he will either.
Anyone concerned with the price hike can e-mail the publisher:
publisher@clarionledger.com
If you call the C-L's customer service number, tell them you wish to cancel your subscription and let them know it's because of the price increase, they will give you a lower rate. It's just like the cable and satellite companies. They'll push you as high as you let them, but if you push back, you'll win. They can't afford to lose more subscribers.
The online edition reads just fine on the iPad and the PC, and doesn't fill up the recycle bins with the crap ads that nobody reads. Another benefit for this online reader: I can scroll right past the BORING SPORTS SHIT. "A team played another team! Somebody won! Somebody lost! Oooooooh!" Pfffttthhhhht.
Uh, Ophelia, you do realize, don't you, that all the sports news in the dead tree edition is in its own little section called the (wait for it) "Sports Section".
No one cares if you're not interested in it (Many people are, which is why they publish it) but you can just put the whole sports section in the recycling with one gesture.
Just spare us your gratuitous comments about it. As long as they're running pictures of my kid in it I will be buying it and sending copies to his grandparents - and I don't care what you think about it. Imagine that!
Four days and still no reply from the Clarion-Ledger publisher. Leslie announced she would not return e-mails and it looks like this new guy is going to do the same thing.
Touchy, touchy, 1:06. I'll make any "gratuitous" comment I goddamn well please, even if it offends your sports-daddy sensibilities. Hey, don't like my comments? Just scroll right on down when you see "Ophelia," just as I scroll past the BORING SPORTS SHIT (and vacation/pet/food/flower/sunset photos on Facebook.
Ophelia, got a little odor goin' on there honey. Need to be careful as you interact with the general public.
A relative called the C-L service line and complained about the price increase. They promptly reduced the price from $32 to $27 per month. Every subscriber should call.
