Hinds County District Attorney Robert Schuler Smith issued the following press release:
Habitual offender Marquis Charleston given 3 mandatory life sentences
May 27, 2014
(JACKSON,
MISS.) Hinds County District Attorney Robert Shuler Smith today announced
habitual offender Marquis Deshune Charleston (age 24) of Jackson has been sentenced
to three consecutive life sentences for Attempted Aggravated Assault on a Law
Enforcement Officer, Felon in Possession of a Firearm, and Felony Fleeing or
Eluding.
Life without
parole is the mandatory sentence for each count in a conviction of a habitual
offender. Charleston was sentenced by Hinds County Circuit Judge William A.
Gowan.
Charleston has
prior felony convictions in Hinds County for Receiving Stolen Goods, Convicted
Felon with a Firearm, and Sexual Battery. At the time he committed his most
recent offenses Charleston was on probation for Sexual Battery, which has been
revoked by the Mississippi Department of Corrections.
At his trial
last week jurors heard testimony that on April 19, 2013, Charleston attempted
to avoid a road block while driving his girlfriend’s car. A Hinds County
Sheriff’s Office deputy initiated a traffic stop, with sirens and blue lights.
Charleston refused to pull over. He ran several stop signs and drove 50 MPH through
a residential neighborhood as he attempted to flee from the deputy.
Charleston
eventually parked at his Verbena St. residence in Jackson. He ran through the
neighborhood with the deputy on his heels. Charleston then pulled out a handgun
and fired over his shoulder at the deputy. Charleston got away, but was later
arrested by U.S. Marshals, who found him hiding in an air conditioner vent at
another girlfriend’s residence.
“Marquis Charleston is only 24-years-old and
he already has six felony convictions in Hinds County,” said Smith. “His
short-lived criminal career has earned him many, many years in the
penitentiary.”

My boy Deeshun were a good boy. He ain't never did none O this.
So are we supposed to give Smith kudos for this or thank him for not cutting the loser a deal?
if Guest had done this y'all would be putting him up for sainthood
Smith did not start doing this until the media saw how long he was taking to get folks to trail. Now all of a sudden we hear about something every couple of weeks. This guy is a joke.
The difference is that Guest does this routinely, Smith does this once in a blue moon.
"But he was turning his life around and working on a new rap album"..................
Good?
Man, 3 life sentences? I am assuming Judge Weill sentenced him, as there is no way Green or Kidd issued this sentence. Mark my word, the libs will march this guy out in a few years as Exhibit A for excessive sentencing.
Seems like it says life is the mandatory sentence under these circumstances. Yes, let's throw a party for the DA....
D. A. Smith seems to be doing a good job, as is D. A. Guest. It's comical how many followers of the KF are so quick to confine good and evil to geographical locations. Good and evil are evenly spread. Judge not too quickly, lest you be found with a beam in your eye. Or something like that. :)
Hinds County Judge Gowan sentneced him per the press release, not Weill.
And 12:46 - forget the Bible quotes. You live down there if you're happy with the way Smith gets criminals off the streets; I'm happy to live up in Guest's territory. If you can't read and understand the differences in crime stats, well - that's not my problem.
Evil is not measured in crime statistics. Nor is anyone holier by virtue of their address. Beware the sin of pride, especially its most vicious variety, smugness.
Thus endeth the sermon.
Smith inherited an incredible mess when he took office in 2008. There was almost 5,000 cases open, some dating back over ten years. There is currently about 3,000 cases pending, with the majority of those before Judges Kidd and Green. Smith has JPD working the vast majority of crimes in Hinds County, and JPD is a horribly ineffective law enforcement agency for reasons ranging from simply incompetent to corrupt. It is a much harder job that the DA's job in Rankin and Madison. Guest does a great job with a much bigger budget and much more stable, talented, and honest law enforcement. These jabs at Smith are from folks without much knowledge about him and his staff.
Well then, 5:09, since he is elected, and not beholden to any of those you mention, why can't Smith (while waxing his brows) stand up like a man and call a spade a spade? Or does the job require that the incumbent be a shrinking violet?
(I will now type in two tiny social security numbers to prove I'm not a robot)
Re: Smith and the former Faye-
When is the last time a death sentence happened for a perp in Hinds Co?
Not saying this cat was eligible.
Just a general question for the killers sentenced in Hinds since DA prosecutional practices was brought up on this thread.
