Today is a holiday in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King. I've collected some clips and posted them here for your enjoyment.
Interview on Meet the Press after Selma.
Here is one interview with Dr. King where he rebuts Malcolm X's criticism of his philosophy and work.
Then there is the "I have a dream" speech. Yup, I'm posting this here and daring the King estate to sue me for infringement.

Sure looks like a "Fair Use" exception as an educational item top me, and I'm sure to at least one out of 12 jurors too ;-)
They are appallingly greedy re: his legacy, IMHO.
WLBT News: is reporting " a shooting occurred at a Utica nightclub today" ...
I'm sure MLK would be proud.
Today is also General Robert E. Lee's Birthday.
Oh hell, I'm sorry , .... any decent American hero is not political correct .
I don't understand how voter id is an affront to MLK's legacy. Isn't it more of an affront and insult to what he wanted for this world to promote voter fraud and dishonesty?
I don't get.
This national holiday is absurd, honoring a man who was a womanizer and plagiarized over half of his doctoral degree from Boston College. He also stole the "I Have A Dream" speech from Archibald Carey, a popular black preacher in the 1950's. WHY DO WE NOT TELL OUR CHILDREN THE WHOLE TRUTH ABOUT THIS MAN.YOU CAN ASK ANY SCHOOL AGE CHILD ABOUT MARTIN LUTHER KING AND ALL THEY KNOW IS THAT HE WAS A GREAT MAN THAT HELPED THE BLACK PEOPLE. By the way, his name is NOT Dr. Martin Luther King, it is Michael King
205 years ago this Thursday,
( January 19, 1807) a true American hero was born.
On this date, there was great joy at Stratford Plantationin Westmoreland County, Virginia . For on that day , the cutest little baby boy was
brought forth into the world. His famous Revolutionary War Dad would name this
little bundle of joy Robert Edward.
Little Bobby Ed Lee would go on to great things.
6:32, A racist asshole...
6:32, I'm sure you've taught your children well...as for mine I choose not to teach them such drivel as you spout. It's 2012 dimwit, put your goddamn hood away!
The 'history' of King, like that of Lincoln, grows in falsity each passing year.
{Can I get an amen and a chorus of 'You Racist Bigot' now?}
Let me see if I understand 9:12 and 9:07. To teach the truth of who Lincoln and King really were is racist. Recorded history is replete with Lincoln's racist remarks regarding his thoughts on negroes. The same is true of King's womanizing and his "whore at every train station" lifestyle. Next we'll be told that Barack Hussein Obama has been an effective president. Americans are great at inventing heroes. I'll stick with Lash Larue and Charles Bronson.
Mississippian Myrlie Evers Williams just gave the Invocation prayer at the Inauguration of the President of the United States of America. She speaks well, and I would wager that if you sat her down along with Dewey Phil Bryant to take a high school ACT test, she would score much higher than Bryant!!!
What the hell was wrong with Schumer for not saying Obama's middle name? Too bad Miss Myrlie lost her Southern accent... And thanks to the Brooklyn Tabernacle (really?) Choir for butchering the Battle Hymn of the Republic. Were all of those amateurish vocal gymnastics really necessary?
It's 2012 dimwit, put your goddamn hood away!
Shudder to think what is taught to the children in your pot-kettle house.
um, I am at work like the rest of the people (few that we are) that actualy still work in the PRIVATE sector. where is my mail? why can't I cash a damn check? why do those "trough feeders" spend so much time on vacation? I just found out last night from a friend that works at walgreens that the welfare suckers don't even pay sales tax when using their welfare cards to buy lobster..no sales tax? yet those welfare cards are charged up each month from TAXES the rest of us pay? gads, I bet mlk is SOOOOOOOOOO of his homies about right now...
I fail to see how anyone would find cause to celebrate the birthday of Robert E. Lee who is arguably the greatest traitor this Nation ever knew or endured. That Lincoln and Grant allowed him and his ilk to keep their heads stands as a monument to their humanity. Regrettably, that humanity caused this nation continuing grief for another century and still counting. Until his worshipers are extirpated root and branch this Nation will continue to muddle through. Hey, that mythical "welfare queen" isn't our Nation's problem. You are.
January 21, 2013 at 3:18 PM ... blah, blah, blah, blah.
1461 days until the Kenyan is gone.
The 'battle hymn' deserves to be butchered. It's an abomination to begin with.
Walgreens sells lobster?
"I just found out last night from a friend that works at walgreens that the welfare suckers don't even pay sales tax when using their welfare cards to buy lobster..no sales tax? yet those welfare cards are charged up each month from TAXES the rest of us pay?"
What aisle does Walgreen's keep the lobsters in? Does Whole Foods know how tough the competition is in Jacktown?
(I'll be nice - somebody got their man-panties in a twist the last time I used "Jackustan")
Once again Shadow displays his ignorance to the world.
He barks & yaps before he reads any comment.
ShadowDude, ...calm down son ...you responded to
comments from last year .
Damn, Shadow must be related to James Carville.
They're both like nervous chihuahuas under a heat lamp.
Hey 3:18, please return to your internship duties.
Donner was spotted walking toward ya'lls secret office.
I would hate for her to catch you reading JJ and have to send you back to the boarding house on Hartfield
without supper.
Ahh, I see Mississippi jus' keepin' it real on here. Glad to see nothing's changed....snark.
You just 5:27 PM but they do read JJ @ the JFP. Ladd reads daily.
Happy Birthday Gen Lee!
well now princess, keep your panties untwisted...it not the lobster that is the issue..or even where it is sold. The point is that those welfare bottomfeeders don't pay sales tax when using electronic food stamps. BUT, each and every month, those electronic food stamp cards are loaded up with TAX $$$'s the rest of us pay...
no question r.e. lee was a remarkable man and born leader. he made a tough decision and conducted himself with honor.
as for welfare queens being mythical? what the hell planet are you from?
My thoughts on General Lee are this:
It was a much much different time back then. The state was much more important in the scheme of things than it is now as we live under a more centralized government and it is all we have known. The Union was seen by many as a collection of little nations that formed together for common defense, commmerce, etc. There was a loyalty to the state you don't see today because the state does not mean as much now.
General Lee was placed into a bad position I would hope none of you ever face in its severity regardless of choice: Fight against the Uniform he wore with distinction and honor for many years and with the people he grew up with and lived with OR command the union forces and be forced to kill his neighbors and possibly family members. You think its so easy to make that choice?
Look at his character and behavior before and after the war. He was one who told people after the war to put up their rebel flags. Show me where he mistreated others. Were there any war crimes he ordered?
On such things, I always look at what his enemies had to say about him. Its like Rommel. There is a respect for Rommel that does not exist for other German Generals in WWII. There is a reason Lee's enemies had respect for him and treated him the way he did. Much easier to sit here 150 years later and judge him. I'm sure the decisions of Bush and Obama will be seen in 150 years the same way they are seen today.
As to Dr. King's sins, I can almost see Jesus sitting over to one side, doodling with his fingers in the dirt.
Its not who I am underneath but what I do that defines me.
That's not at all true, KF, from a Christian perspective. If your statement were true, your sins (what you do) would define you rather than your belief of and acceptance of Christ (what you are underneath).
The holiday was named for what he tried to do to improve society, not for a moral failing.
If we gave holidays for moral lapses Clinton would have a month named after him.
4:29; I think the point is that some of us feel outrage that people like King and Lincoln have become saints of paper mache' crafted by the hands of men who either misunderstood them, willingly misrepresented them or ignored the truths surrounding them. Let's at least agree to give a shout-out to sunshine and full disclosure.
Kingfish,
Your comments regarding General Lee were perfect.
Shadow, how you missed that one is beyond me.
@shadowfax i'm not going to deny that our historical understanding of MLK is completely accurate, but how is that different from any historic figure? It is similar to George Washington's "I cannot tell a lie" story. Sometimes we, as a culture, make historic figures bigger than life after their deaths - which is okay, because it makes the celebration of their lives more meaningful.
Oh, and by the way, I've seen too many bigoted comments from you to take any of your talk about spirituality seriously....are you kidding me?
A George Washington 'cherry tree' myth in no way compares to the mythery surrounding Abe Lincoln and Michael King (who they call MLK). Much of what we teach our children about the latter two are lies and we do that knowingly, intentionally. I don't give a rat's ass whether you take me seriously or not ~ if you have an ounce of honesty in your veins you know this is the truth. LOSER.
