Karen Irby's indictment for depraved heart murder and aggravated assault was not her first brush with the law. Court records show she was arrested for DUI-1st offense and Reckless Driving over ten years ago in Rankin County.
Reservoir Patrol Officer Wes Flynt stopped Mrs. Irby (then Ms. Collins) in her BMW on Spillway Road at 2:20 AM on December 28, 1997. Flynt wrote on the ticket for reckless driving she was driving 70 mph in a 45 mph zone and that she "stated (she was) in a hurry".
Mrs. Irby was convicted of all charges in Rankin County Justice Court on Febuary 23, 1998. Judge Ken Warren fined her $500 and a special assessment of $202 for the DUI conviction, as well as a $100 fine and a special assessment of $51 for the reckless driving charge.
Mrs. Irby immediately appealed her conviction to the Rankin County Court. Judge Kent McDaniel granted the prosecution's motion of Nolle Prosequi on June 24, 1998, thus dismissing the case. Mrs. Irby was represented by attorney Dan Duggan.
One must wonder why the prosecution dropped the case when it had already obtained a conviction in a lower court. There is a possible explanation, one that is not too flattering to say the least. Ms. Collins was dating someone at the time who just happened to be the bachelor son of a former Rankin County Sheriff. Given Rankin County's reputation for shenanigans in the courtroom (See the Berry v. Aetna post), it would not surprise anyone if such connections played a part in the prosecutor's decision to drop the case. Regardless of why the prosecution requested the dismissal, the fact remains Mrs. Irby was convicted in a court of law for a DUI and speeding more than 20 miles over the speed limit, even though it was struck down by a higher court that never addressed the merits of the case.
It should also be noted Mrs. Irby was also found guilty on June 17, 1998 of the charge of Disorderly Conduct. Judge McDaniel fined her $1000 but suspended payment of $500 provided she did not get arrested again for one year.
Note: By the way, this post shows that once again, Jimmie Gates displayed his knack for getting basic facts wrong on this case. He wrote in the Clarion-Ledger: "Karen Irby has no prior criminal history, according to police and court records in Hinds County." Do I need to say it?

Uh oh. This is not going to make Special K very happy..
Well if Jimmie said she had no prior criminal history in HINDS COUNTY and the DUI is in RANKIN COUNTY, then you haven't "caught" him on a point. You are trying to "catch" reporters too hard. Obviously a RANKIN DUI wouldn't be in the court records of HINDS. Should he have checked Rankin court filings? Maybe. But don't say he got his facts wrong when according to the words of your own post he did not.
ACTUALLY she has an arrest in 2004 for assault IN JACKSON. I just didn't include it in the post above.
The case was dimissed when the complainant didn't show BUT the fact remains, there was a charge and arrest for it.
Next?
Well that tidbit certainly changes things.
Good work, Kingfish. As for Gates missing this, as far as I'm concerned he did. I don't care how this sounds, but to me, her prior record/arrests anywhere (not just Hinds Co., how ridiculous) are completely relevent to what happened on OCR.
The CL's coverage has been biased on this from the get-go and I think that has everything to do fabled image of the philanthropic Irby's. Granted, the Irby's may very well be the finest and most generous folks anywhere ever and that is tremendously commendable, but last we checked they are still only human.
Kingfish, thank you for bringing this very interesting information to light, and do keep up the good work.
That 2004 arrest came after an attack in a well known Jackson restaurant. Mrs. Bounds (at that time) was seen by a room full of people (even one of TVs evening news anchors was there) attacking two individuals (mother and daughter).
So is she driving now?
Still can't believe with this history that her DL wasn't taken as part of the bond agreement and she isn't being tested for drugs and alcohol.
Good work KF. You seem to be the only reporter in town who does their homework.
Seems some DAs and judges didn't do their homework before agreeing to the bond conditions as well.
9:05...you sound reasonable. It's a pattern of conduct that hasn't been that big of a secret around town. That's why I'm always a bit amazed at the defenders who claim to "really" know Karen. Is it they are simply acquaintances or are they in a state of denial or have a personal agenda? I'd hate to think they see this behavior as acceptable or OK or not that big a deal.
It could be that Karen believes that she is someone she isn't. She may tell others that don't know her (like Stuart) that everyone lies about her and she really is innocent of all the slander being said about her. Point being, it isn't slander but the truth. You can't hide forever behind lies nor can you keep up the lies. God reveals the TRUTH especially for those who bare false witness (lying about other people) and for those who don't repent and are hypocrites.
When you get all the info, please post it all on a timeline for us.
Why did it take so long for this information to come out?
Good work, KF. You have to think about the Irby family and their friends as more and more information they didn't know comes out about Karen Irby. I wonder if they really care if she is locked up for a long time or not. I suspect they don't.
Karen's sense of self entitlement is a never ending source of amazement. Good work KF '35, love this site.
I believe the Irby's knew of her issues. That most likely is the reason Stuart wasn't going to marry her unless the DNA came back positive. I bet no one in the family was excited about the marriage. Stuart probably felt pressure from his child being born out of wedlock and the biblical aspects. Yet, he wasn't concerned about the purity of his relationship with Karen or Christian belief system because if he was......there would be no baby and thus no marriage. Just goes to show you that you need to be careful who you RELATIONS with especially if you have money and no brains...
All right, you know why that got zapped.
Seriously? Are you really patting yourself on the back and beating down every reporter you can? Relax, little man. Relax.
As a very informed reader, I believe that KF is correct in calling out the CL. Their readership is the potential jury pool out there and if they use their media power to "taint" the pool b/c of powerful connections, they are not a worthwhile news agency; they simply become a mouthpiece and propaganda for powerful/influential interests. The information presented here is disconcerting, and I have to believe the educated public - that I find so often here - believes that if you did it once, were told not to do it again - YOU DON'T DO IT AGAIN! The fact the CL did not take the time to diligently research her background shows one of two things: 1) they did not do their homework and research beyond a very narrow scope, or 2) they were influenced NOT to provide anything more than information to "satiate the masses." I do not enjoy being spoonfed information that "they" think is important. I choose not to read the CL for this reason and will continue my patronage of this fine site.
Of course KF is right calling out the Clarion Ledger. However, it was that first fluff article with the pictures of the Irby family that really started their friends and neighbors telling the real truth about Stuart and Karen's marriage. The Clarion Ledger and the Irby lawyers thought it would sway everyone to feel sorry for the family, but instead more damaging information started pouring out. Thanks again, KF. Keep up the good work.

Listen, I do appreciate the background work. But keep things in perspective. KF was jumping up and down that Irby's BAC was .19 but it was WAPT that first reported it was .09. I don't criticize the guy for that. Just a little less back-patting please.
I had an excellent source. Keep in mind WAPT's has NOT been verified. The ONLY source for the .09 is WAPT.
Everyone criticized me for putting up the divorce but at least me and the readers got it right about the lack of service and the passage of 120 days, unlike the CL and WAPT which made it look like he was still divorcing Karen.
And at least I put up the docs where you can read them, unlike the CL or tv stations which tell you what they THINK they say.
Do you realize how much time and yes, some money, too, it takes to get this information? FOIA requests also require payment assessed per page of info, not to mention ALL the time it takes to investigate and search for this.
You are correct. In this case I got lucky in that these were files already adjudicated so everything was in there. If that was not the case, then I would've been stuck filing a public records request, waiting three weeks, etc.
HOWEVER, most of the info I've posted over time didn't require FOIA requests but instead just required going to the courthouse and looking at the file or calling the courthouse and just asking if someone was ever a party to a lawsuit.
Where Gates has been screwing up is JUST calling the courthouse, NOT looking at the file itself, and thus missing a ton of information. For example, the motion to postpone told us who the prosecutor was and that they were going to ask for a nuerologist, which gave a clue as to the defense. You don't get that calling the courthouse.
Exactly, KF. You put the articles up, give us facts, and reference other things for us to read, and then you leave it to your readers to form their own conclusions. The Clarion Ledger can't even get half the story right most times. The TV stations give you about two or three lines of what you already have read or heard before their broadcast. I appreciate your detective work.
Did we ever find out why the two individuals (Dr. Lisa D. Williams of Jackson and Kirk McDaniel of Ridgeland) have already been subpoenaed to be present whe the trial begins in March 2010?
Good work KingFish.
KF, who was the bachelor son that Karen was dating at the time of her DUI? Or which former sheriff? Just curious, think it may have been my now ex-husband.
Gotta wonder how may other DUI's she's gotten in this or any other states.
Why does she still have a dl again?
Doesn't insurance get kind of tricky after DUI's?
Interesting that Karen's address on the 1998 DUI case is listed as Williams Blvd in Ridgeland...the same street that one of the witnesses, Kirk McDaniel, lives on. Wonder if that is just coincidence.
"Interesting that Karen's address on the 1998 DUI case is listed as Williams Blvd in Ridgeland...the same street that one of the witnesses, Kirk McDaniel, lives on. Wonder if that is just coincidence."
Probably coincidence - there were 2 big apartment complexes there at that time.
More great work, KF. The CL is pathetically amateurish, good only for the supermarket coupons on Sundays (as I noted in another post last week). They are apparently incapable of being embarrassed by being out-hustled by a non-journalist who actually gets the info they miss (either through incompetence or deliberate efforts to slant the public's perception).
MADD? No press release or comment? The "Executive Director" needs to step down. Incompetent to say the least... How sad that such a great organization has proven to be completely worthless in Mississippi.
You can contact the national chapter here:

I'm zapping because on other threads when the exes start getting brought into it then it just goes downhill from there so I nip it in the bud now.
KF, has any of the other media outlets picked up your stories on the bond and past record?
If they have , I missed it.
Given the public interest, I find that interesting. Any explanations to offer?
good job, kingfish!
3 just did the IRBY Dui Story and did not attribute to anyone. They are lagging way behind WAPT and this website on that story and I guess this is just a shameful theft to try and look like they are keeping up.
KF,
WOW! Just so you know... meant to reference John Belushi's comment not Jim's. Sorry people, last comment has nothing to do with the Irby's!
It would be useful to do a little biography of Karen Collins Bounds Irby, starting with her first arrests by date and time. Such a compilation may finally let her many defenders know that they should shut-the-flock-up.
All I can say is hope she told her lawyer about this one. If I was her lawyer, I'd be pretty hot if it was witheld from me. I've known some lawyers to fire their clients when they weren't told everything.
Well, the bio with arrests would be a long one I bet. I know of several myself in Jackson, Ridgeland and Madison. KF you need to just show her arrests. No telling what she got into before moving to our fair city. Where did she grow up? I heard it was on the Miss Coast.
Depends, KF, if her lawyers are the source of some of her more outrageous defenses ( casting blame on the victims in a ludicrous way is the first to come to mind)or it's from Karen.
The kind of lawyer that fires a client is too ethical for some of the nonsense I've heard.
Some defense lawyers seem to have forgotten that the best available defense and making the state prove their case wasn't intended to include a far fetched , baseless defense at the expense of innocent parties.
she will, no doubt be sent to prison but this 1998 dui shouldn't be a factor one way or the other.
"she will, no doubt be sent to prison but this 1998 dui shouldn't be a factor one way or the other."
When it's shown as part of the long history of her arrests, it just might.
I'm not a lawyer, but why would this 1998 arrest NOT be a factor? Would it not establish a pattern of behavior?
With Karen's multiple arrests and current status, and Stuart twice "rehabbed", it makes you wonder why the heck they are allowed to have ANY kids under their roof!
You have to feel sorry for the children.
The kids are precious. Hope they'll be OK. One thing Karen did right was have beautiful children.
All right, leave the kids out of it. I'm about to start zappin' if y'all don't.
GOOD Job Kingfish! You should be the highest paid Journalist in Jackson since you are the ONLY one that really researches and provides documentation of wrong-doings a` la Jackson!!!!!
There is a donate button up there.
Feel free to use it. ;-)
Where did all the *ss kissing Irby supporters go?
Did they find another affluent couple to worship?
"All right, leave the kids out of it. I'm about to start zappin' if y'all don't."
Chill. Nothing derogatory was said about the children. They are very much a part of lawsuit, and no one in their right mind is here to hurt them in any way.
All right, you know why those came down. Knuckleheads. ;-)
Ok KF, tell us the rest of the story. We know you are holding back some good stuff. What cha waiting on???
I would be working on a great plea deal if it were me... She has to know that things do not look very good on this one... I unlike most believe that with all of the publicity surrounding this case. She will see the inside of a cell.
No Doubt. Can you just see her having one of her crazy outburst on one of her new immates friends? She will be someone's little slave in there. Out here she hides behind this fake identity.....in there she is just Karen the new girl.... I can't wait to see her go. She need hard labor.
It has been my observation that Gates the "professional writer" can't spell four-letter words or use correct basic punctuation.
Driving under the influence of alcohol is considered to be one with the severe offenses across the globe. Most of the nations around the world have serious consequence for this type of crime, as whenever drunk and driving it may well lead to incidents that hurts other individuals too. Just in case when one is booked for drunken drive, the very best, the individual can do would be to get DUI Lawyers to rescue him.

Well said. Unfortunately, that does not explain why Mississippi's MADD led by specifically by Tricia Raymond kept completely silent during the Irby coverage.
Personally, I feel the local chapter should be shut down. Hell, SADD sends out more press releases and in my opinion has been a lot more effective in getting the message out.
