Attorney Generalissimo Evelyn Fitch issued the following statement.
This morning, Attorney General Lynn Fitch notified Scott Colom and Scott Colom for Senate that recent AI-generated ads posted by the campaign on their social media platforms appear to violate State law against the use of "deepfakes" to influence elections. The Attorney General asked that the ads be removed or else the office may file an injunction as authorized by law. As violations of this election integrity law can carry criminal penalties, Attorney General Fitch has also asked Scott Colom and his campaign to preserve all records related to this matter so as not to obstruct justice.
The Attorney General's notification follows a complaint that two ads posted to the Scott Colom for Senate Facebook account and Scott Colom Instagram account are deepfakes disseminated by the campaign within ninety days of an election, without the consent of the digitized individual, Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith, and are intended to injure Scott Colom's opponent and/or influence the results of the election. The complaint can be read here.
Violations of Section 97-13-47 of the Mississippi Code carry penalties of up to 5 years in prison and/or fines of up to $10,000 if the intent is to "deter any person from voting." Other violations carry penalties of up 1 year in prison and/or fines of up to $5,000.

Nobody believes for one second that Fitch would actually press criminal charges on somebody.
Clownshow(R) top to bottom
It would be great if we could just
unsee things!
Enforce the law. Shut down AI election deepfakes.
To think Colom was almost confirmed as a federal district judge four years ago now makes my skin crawl.
CHS blocked his confirmation by withholding her blue slip, so this is obviously payback by a petty man, backed by petty men.
I am telling you, they are going to end up screwing around and losing what would normally be a lock in election
No one in Fitch’s office knows how to successfully prosecute a crime. So sad how far that office has fallen.
CH-S uses a lot of AI to touch up her photos in the brochures I am bombarded with via text and snail mail, whats the difference? Anybody with good sense knows its not her normal appearance, they are both fictitious! As far as Fitch, she is finished in politics, next job for her is within the COJ legal department.
If you like Mao, Marx, Mussolini, Stalin, and Pol Pot, you'll love Colom.
More vote pandering.
This could get interesting if both sides don't turn it down a notch or three. See, e.g., Trump v. BBC for an example of what can happen when one party (no pun intended) tries to use the courts as a weapon against an opponent who is ready, willing, and able to see your (sketchy, but at least licensed) lawyers and raise you a few high-steppers. Remember, poker players, a full house beats two deuces and a Joker.
If the shoe was on the other foot, would the AG even care?? Asking for a friend.
"If you like Mao, Marx, Mussolini, Stalin, and Pol Pot, you'll love Colom." We already have a combination of those five in Trump and a lot of you seem ok with it
CHS will win in a walk.
Is this where politics is now? You would love to show your opponent doing or saying something that they didn't do or say. And since they didn't do it or say it, you just create it with deepfakes and AI. We better get a handle on this sort of thing or soon the truth will be well beyond our ability to find it.
"If you like Mao, Marx, Mussolini, Stalin, and Pol Pot, you'll love Colom."
Especially if you're a very short, fat, extremely tall, skinny person who cannot stand any of the things they really like. Trying to label every Dem a Democratic Socialist is just as idiotic as claiming all Republicans are MAGAnuts. As the mid-terms may well demonstrate, people, parties, and ideologies don't fit into neat boxes and the most important folks in US elections are us middlin' mutts of the middle.
To paraphrase Reagan, I didn't leave the Republican party, just like I have friends who didn't leave the Democratic party. Both parties went batshit crazy on us all. I wonder if Colom really thinks that Kamala Harris coming to MS "for him" is a smart idea. Here's a hint: no, it isn't.
Nice move by Fitch as she tries to find some base within the established Republican Party, but with nobody believing that either this move by her, or the comedic move by Chmn Hurst over Colom's campaign ad. While this gives her a day's, or at least part of a day's, news, nothing will come of her demand. Colom's ad has run its course and probably wasn't going to be used again during the last two weeks.
But it all needs to fit into the giant scheme; is Fitch going to demand that CHS take down the fake website she created under Colom's name trying to post damning (and unproven tales, even lies) about Colom? Surely not because all's fair in love and war, and in campaigns - especially in Mississippi
I don't recall her issuing a statement like this when Delbert accused Chris McDaniel of violating campaign finance laws.....
I find it quite humorous, on local television, a Colom ad will run, immediately followed by a Hyde-Smith ad…
If Espy couldn't beat her, twice, no way Jose that Colom does.
What sort of clown AG makes an announcement that someone is violating a statute without an accompanying statement that charges are being filed? So she states someone is breaking a law but isn’t going to do anything about it?
"If Espy couldn't beat her, twice, no way Jose that Colom does."
I wouldn't be so sure. Espy is, well, Espy and Colom is not, plus the anger against Trump and MAGA is a tailwind for Colom whereas Trump, at least in Mississippi in 2020, was a pretty large coattail for CHS. 2018 was a lot closer, even with McDaniel in part 1, than 2020. I wouldn't bet on either way on this one. I will say that Harris coming to stump for him, just like Trump coming for CHS, is not a move I would have made as both are far more likely to turn off all-important independentish voters still in play than get either of them votes they weren't already going to get.
Woohee! Husband and I got our autopen signed letters from Trump today announcing and touting that he is sending each of us $90 to offset our October Medicare premiums! The checks must "be in the mail" because we haven't seen them yet.
Hey, Fitch, does our state have any laws against vote buying?
Sorry, but that is seriously stupid.
News Tip.
Simpson County Sheriff Department arrested another Hobby and charged with murder in the rash of shootings this past weekend
Considering that most of the public considers Mainstream Media to be THE ENEMY, the image of Lynn running from reporters is more likely to increase support for her, rather than contempt.
The AI makes her more physically attractive than she actually is, and far better-dressed. And her surroundings look tres chic. ...all of this serving to show Fitch in the best possible light.
If I were the CCP, I mean the "Democrats", I'd be arranging little accidents for the folks who cooked-up the ad, since it's making the Republican candidate look great.
"But it all needs to fit into the giant scheme; is Fitch going to demand that CHS take down the fake website she created under Colom's name trying to post damning (and unproven tales, even lies) about Colom? Wait what? She made a fake website posting lies?
I dont think CHS will lose. She beat Epsy 54 to 44 but I think her percent goes down to 52 and Colum goes to 46 maybe 46.5
4:15 - what's stupid? Pointing out the socialist in the Trump cabinet? What else can best be described the process of the government 'taking an interest in' companies that then receive financial benefits, protections, or contracts from that government entity that is now a 'shareholder'? Or from Trump himself that seems to be envious of the world's actual dictators and wants to emulate them; since he has a few constraints put on him by the Supremes, he can only cozy up to them and call them fantastic people.
Hell, it been being done without AI for decades, showing your opponent as saying or doing something they didn't do. Check out the mailers, from most any serious candidate with a serious opponent (and yes, the would include CHS's mailers and the fake website she created as well) in any election. AI just changed the parameters a little but not the process.
@4:46 it won't be because Colom is a superior candidate to Mike Espy.
Cook just moved the race to lean Republican, the next step is toss up. Cindy is sweating, her bread and butter voters farmers are suffering behind tariffs and the war in Iran. Cindy is a rubber stamp. People are looking for someone who will fight for them.
Yeah, right. Charlie Cook called the 2024 race for President a toss up. How did that turn out? Trump romped 312–226.
Why didn't Trump make her the Ag. Secretary. She was the only one with qualifications.
Colom to the AG:
Make me, you feckless twat!
So Colom knows he is violating campaign laws, but he just doesn't care.
typical Dumbocrat tacky
