MDOC arrested yet another person trying to sneak contraband into the prison in Rankin County. MDOC issued the following statement.
A visitor to the Central Mississippi Correctional Facility in July is now facing charges related to that visit.
Cheryl Gooch was arrested Thursday, Aug. 6, 2026, at her home on charges of possession of a controlled substance with the intent to distribute in a correctional facility, introduction of a controlled substance into a correctional facility, and conspiracy. She was being held on a bond totaling $350,000 in the Rankin County Jail.
Gooch, 50, is accused of smuggling the contraband (spice paper) into the Rankin County facility in her waistband on July 11, 2026, while visiting an inmate whom corrections officials also plan to charge. The contraband was found on the inmate following a search conducted after visitation that day. A subsequent forensic analysis confirmed the substance tested positive for Fluoro ADB in the amount of 55.68 grams. Exposure to Fluoro ADB is associated with severe adverse health effects, including hallucinations, seizures, psychosis, and death.
“We charged the visitor after getting the physical evidence and witness statements and conducting interviews and receiving the laboratory analysis,” CMCF Supt. Matt Reynolds said. “We wanted to make sure we had taken all the necessary steps.”
Commissioner Cain said the department’s efforts are ongoing to keep drugs out. “We want the public to know about those efforts," he said.
If convicted, Gooch could face significant fines and prison time, including up to 20 years alone on the conspiracy charge.
