How the mighty have fallen. Former Jackson Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba pleaded guilty to conspiracy in federal court today.

| AUSA David Fulcher & Chokwe Lumumba |
Wearing an immaculate light-colored suit, Lumumba stood before U.S. District Judge Daniel P. Jordan, III surrounded by his three attorneys, answering the judge's questions in a voice bereft of the swagger it usually carried.
Assistant U.S. Attorney David Fulcher said the defendant waived his right to contest the conviction and the sentence. Mr. Fulcher said the Justice Department will seek restitution and forfeiture of assets.
A federal grand jury indicted the former Mayor for conspiracy, bribery, honest services wire fraud, money laundering, and use of an interstate facility in aid of racketeering in October 2024. FBI undercover agents bribed Lumumba, Banks, former Hinds County District Attorney Jody Owens, Councilwoman Angelique Lee, and insurance agent Marve Smith in a sting operation. The agents posed as developers seeking to bribe public officials so they would get the bid to build a convention center hotel.
Fulcher recited the facts of the case. The city of Jackson issued a request for quotes for the project. The deadline was March 12, 2024. The city extended it to the end of April 2024 due to a lack of bids. Owens and Lumumba agreed for Lumumba to get a $50,000 payment in exchange for closing the bidding process, thus rigging the bid for the undercover agents.
Owens obtained $50,000 from the undercover and routed it in to five $10,000 payments to Lumumba to avoid bribery laws. Lumumba called a city of Jackson employee to shorten the deadline once he received payment. The bribe took place while Owens and Lumumba partied with the undercover in Miami. Lumumba in turn wrote checks totaling $50,000 that were made out to cash drawn on his campaign account.
Judge Jordan tentatively scheduled sentencing for Lumumba and Banks for October 15. Banks will be sentenced at 1 PM. The defendants remained free on bond.
Owens pleaded guilty to conspiracy a week ago.
The maximum penalty for conspiracy is five years in prison and/or a $250,000 fine.
Banks pleaded guilty to conspiracy as well. The grand jury indicted him for conspiracy and bribery. There was some confusion over whether Banks accepted the "best offer" from the government. Banks said he rejected a better offer that included cooperation. The defendant does not have to cooperate under the plea agreement accepted.
Owens and the developers agreed to bribe Banks to obtain his vote for the project. Banks asked for a $50,000 bribe for his vote. Banks accepted an initial bribe of $10,000 in cash along with a promise of future payments. Banks made smaller cash deposits over the next few days and used the funds to pay personal expenses. The Councilman said he could use his authority as City Council President to withhold raises for city officials if they held up the bid.

Right?
What about the other charges? Are they just dropped?
But wait, his supporters said he was innocent.
How about restitution to the City of Jackson? We're the ones who had to suffer through years of this.
Gives a new meaning to fats, oil and grease.
Trump should pardon him
Sister Rukia and company will spin it into he was forced to plead guilty for some b.s. reason.
So wait a minute, that is it? Can they be on the hook for the expense of this whole affair to taxpayers?
As a Jacksonian, I feel like they really owe us all something! Can they retroactively reimburse us all for the garbage collection and water access fees?
1:42PM,
Right?
We deserve full and complete reparations for living through the sht show that was the past 8-9 years. I've seen bombing runs that left a place in better shape than the Lumumbas did.
Indict him on the garbage contract next.
@1:42 PM 100%!!!
Two white men wearing MAGA hats jumped him outside of a Subway and made him sign the guilty plea.
I haven’t felt this much joy since the water went into receivership, but 1:48 is right- no way this could ever be his fault.
Homie isn't so hard now it he? Remember him and the entourage calling this BS and entrapment and how innocent he was? Part of this deal should be asset forfeiture on the offshore bank account(s). That is where the smoking gun is.
Was his wife in attendance to support her husband?
“Radical”
Waiting on Mississippi Today to link their previous articles on how the FBI made this up and mishandled their investigation/entrapment.
With the Guilty Criminal plea, can a Class Action be formed of Jackson private property owners to go after both him and the various Detroit based NGO's, Lawyers, and Foundations who supported him and perhaps enabled the criminal acts by their financial support? Discovery alone would be worth the effort.
Anyone notice he has two new, local, attorneys now?
Where's the staged processions with his entourage of city employees? What a farce all of that was.
Will the Mauve McMansion require fumigation?
Does the Library's rolling ladder still slide?
Will Architect Ken Tate come out of retirement, for the renovation?
Can Jackson prices, thanks to Mayor BabyChok, even justify a remodel?
Who's best at driving-out evil spirits? Hindus? Zazen? Kabbalists? Exorcists? Zerubabbelists?
Tune in, tomorrow, for AS THE STOMACH TURNS...
Let us all remember that this investigation began under the Biden / Garland DoJ. Lets us all remember that those are leftist Democrats. This was not brought about by Republicans, Trump, MAGA supporters, Tate Reeves, etc.
I Cain’t Breeve
What a sweet deal! What is it with this US Attorney? Conspiracy was the least of the charges involved. This isn’t more than a slap on the wrist
Kingfish…
Will the courts release more of the evidence or will it be sealed?
I imagine when he gets out of the BOP Camp, he will likely try to rehabilitate his image by again claiming he is innocent..
After his incarceration he can't pretend to be a lawyer anymore. It will be full time grifter with numerous NGOs.
While this in unfortunate, I don’t think we should lose sight of the many positive aspects of the Lumumba legacy - both father and son. And let’s not forget that these great men were denied the support of the state that would ensure Jackson was restored to greatness.
Was Rukia in court?
@2:23 Don't worry, he still brought his entourage with him to plead guilty.... He must have dirt on them too or they are all in denial and can't bear the thought that Chokwe and Rukia are just another set of grifters taking advantage of anyone they can! Can't wait to see how they try to spin the guilty plea.
I still think this would have gone deeper into the garbage contract and other dealings and would have uncovered multiple fraudulent schemes until Ashby mistakenly blew their cover in the press. The feds had to fast forward the sting once that happened. No telling what they might have uncovered.
Maybe as part of their plea they'll turn on Richard's and other vendors. Might still be a few good chapters coming.
Unfortunate for whom???
@2:13 - Hell will freeze over first. It is embarrassing how one-sided Mississippi Today is.
@2:44 Is this sarcasm? If so, well played! I don't know enough about the father to comment on him, but there is a reason the state didn't trust Lumumba enough to hand over the blank checks he wanted and this guilty plea only makes the state look smarter.
Troll alert at 2:40 with some fake-ass post to try to work people up. Get a job.
Antar told us he was innocent. He said it will come out in the trial that he is innocent. However now we see that he is just a liar liar pants on fire! I can’t believe I supported this man.
Worst Mayor in history. Sure brought Jackson down.
He and Banks should have gotten the same attorney that Brette Favre and Phil Bryant had so they could just slip out the front door without a word said ....
Congratulations to tglhe Biden justice department and the Biden FBI for a job well done.
Most importantly, he’s now ineligible to run for a third term.
Cope and Seethe. Not even smart enough to start your own Facebook stream to spew your bullshit.
I was one of those who thought the mayor's unchecked arrogance wouldn't allow him to plead guilty. BTW, has his former spokesperson, Melissa Faith Payne, resurfaced?
They better try and negotiate some favorable prison circumstances. Otherwise they will be washing out their cell mate’s underwear and clipping their toenails (among other things).
I'm just disappointed I don't get to get my popcorn and watch the legal drama. Oh well. Good riddance.
Whose $150,000 Mercedes Benz G-Wagen drove the lying guilty one from the courthouse?
Jody literally was the DA that indicted Nancy New but didn’t indict Phil.
Shuffle board court getting sorta crowed.
To quote a line from the 90s movie New Jack City… “See ya, and I wouldn’t wanna be ya.”
Let them plea to pennies on the dollar.
“ While this in unfortunate, I don’t think we should lose sight of the many positive aspects of the Lumumba legacy - both father and son. And let’s not forget that these great men were denied the support of the state that would ensure Jackson was restored to greatness.”
HAHAHA You clearly didn’t live in Jackson when Lumumba was mayor and the water system cratered, or the garbage didn’t get picked up, or the street lights couldn’t be repaired, or . . . ”
@2:44 I'll wait while you list out all the many positive aspects of the Lumumba legacy
Who is going to run interference for Sista Rukia now? Who is currently funding Chowke's lifestyle/daily/legal expenses? Lots of kickbacks/grease stashed somewhere? Inquiring minds want to know.
What about jail time?????????
What? Admitted guilt..... Damn, did the sky fall????
Jody stopped and made a statement when he walked out. Antard too yellow to do that. Never thought I would give respect to Jody, but at least he stood tall for a minute.
Being greedy gets you no where. This is just what society was looking for - three black individuals throwing their lives away while the other boys sit back and do the same without a charge. Clay and his supporters are loving this right now.
So, 5 years and $250k? But Lumumba was charged with one count of conspiracy to commit federal program bribery, honest services wire fraud, and money laundering, and, if convicted, faces a maximum penalty of five years in prison for the charge; one count of federal program bribery, and faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison for the charge; one count of using a facility in interstate commerce in furtherance of unlawful activity, and faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison for the charge; one count of honest services wire fraud, and faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison for the charge; and one count of money laundering, and faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison for the charge. So even if all sentences were served concurrently that's 20 years. What's up with the US Attorney, who has evidence in hand? This is not the time or place for the government to entertain a plea to the lesser offense.

Some will still probably claim he's innocent. Pathetic.
Indicted for (1) conspiracy, (2) bribery (3) honest services wire fraud (4) money laundering (5) interstate facility in aid of racketeering.
Pled guilty to 1 of the charges. I am disappointed. Should have been on all charges.
Got to be the white mans fault somehow !
Huh, Huh hey Beavis .... they said Sist'a Rukia .
Shut up Butt Head ...I think .. huh, huh .., the ah ...ah Rukia chick also a might have tight sphincter today
A five year sentence puts him at a federal camp. No bars and no danger to him
Yet, if given the opportunity, the voters in Jackson would re-elect him in a heartbeat
not one word from Skyhook about lumumba.
Every single damn mayor in Jackson history has done the same thing. Chokwe’s only mistake was getting on Bennie T’s bad side while Bennie was chairman of a powerful and influential committee in Washington DC.
It was another case of black on black, crabs in the bucket, character assassination
Fairly bold to ride off in a G wagon after pleading guilty to conspiracy to accept bribes…being the the ex-mayor of a dwindling city.
Fulcher has always been soft.
I'm proud of Ashby Foote for smelling trouble with the "Developers" at the beginning and showing honorable character to sidestep them.
5:26 They had a chance to reelect Lumumba about a year ago, and he got smoked by John Horn.
Maybe he can get work release and pick up my garbage from the back of a Richards truck.
Chokwe is a dear friend, and he loves the city of Jackson more than anything. I thought this was a conspiracy all along. Guess I was wrong.
@2:30 PM, Biden will never get credit from the MS CONservatives. Chokwe should have stayed clean and run for the WH. That way he could be a grifter like the current occupant.
I wonder if Antar will have to return that prestigious award he received from Harvard several years ago. The award was for outstanding public service. Rings pretty hollow now, huh?
Kwame Kilpatrick Jr.
Lil Bit.
The only good thing Lumumba Sr. did was die in office so he couldn't fuck up Jackson. Junior did his dirty work and there are no good points in his Reign of Terror.
Can we get a pothole fixed now? Asking for a friend.
@2:44, Antar was and is a loser. There is not one aspect of of Jackson that he didn't leave in worse shape than when he arrived. All that got accomplished is a lot of theatrics and Rukia handed out bottled water.
Inexplicably she's now in a leadership role at Tougaloo. Failed up.
All I want to say is that these are some sorry ass individuals - and always will be.
2:44 yes please enlighten us on the positive aspects of the ludumba legacy. You won't because you can't.
6:27 he loves it enough to never cut the grass, never clean up parks, let almost 200 people get murdered in one year, never clean up litter, do minimal blight elimination, never shut down violent clubs, and lose a thousand or more in population every year of his reign of terror, and let the streets go to absolute hell? Wow what a strong love!
Yes, you were wrong. If he had truly loved Jackson, he would never have run for mayor and would not have left the city much worse than he found it. He was an unmitigated disaster, and no one suffered more than the people who voted for him.
@6:27 - how could anyone think he loves the city? Exhibit 1: the trash pick up debacle.
Francis Johnson, with the NCBL in Georgia, said residents who feel betrayed by Lumumba should look "to the larger government of Mississippi, which continues to disinvest in Jackson and continue to not serve the citizens of this town, this community, and this state, in the ways it should."
Ah there we go. Dang state government
Harvard has lost all credibility. I have a friend with an MBA from what was once an excellent school - he got so fed up with the bullshit going on up there now that he took his diploma off the wall and threw it in the trash - and, no, he did not retrieve it. The Crimson is living on past reputation.
Well... I'm still wondering about the pretty girl in FL posting her fancy hotel/yacht trips that aligned perfectly with Lumumba's visit where a lot of this went down. How did that get glossed over? I hate it for his wife/girls but they can do better without him. Is he still living in JXN now that he doesn't have police cars across the street watching the house? I'd always heard he was actually staying in Madison but now that the money train is gone who knows. I hope Rukia is out of money. The Lumumba grifting needs to be over as Jackson needs people who want to lift up the city not use it... Jackson has promise but years of elected officials grifting is making it a struggle. Hoping Horn can turn the tide but I'm gone until things change. Jackson could be so good if residents support people who really want to make it great again.
How does this PlumFool look his wife and children in the eye? If I brought this much shame and embarrassment to my family, I’d find it hard to live with myself. PlumFool.
Was facing up to 75 years. Now faces a maximum of 5 years. Will serve 18-24 months in club fed and be paroled in half that. Crime pays.
Seriously? I think this entire case should be dumped into a purchased sidewalk dumpster and picked on by a Louisiana garbage collection company at their earliest convenience.
Dang...time to carry the medicine show and magic elixir up to Chicago or Detroit.
Love for the city isn’t enough. This confirmed corruption was nothing compared to his incompetence. He decimated city government with the worst negligence city hall has ever seen. Please think on that before the next election.
7:05 Horhn’s admin has been significantly better about patching potholes. Not perfect, but lightyears ahead of Chokme.
How is it that this city government trial has moved so fast when we are still waiting for the TANF trial?
I am hopeful that Shukway will be held at the Raymond DC and we get to drive the Interstate and see him in those purdy green stripes picking up the litter that he refused to give any attention to for 8 years. Maybe he can get a job at “Nu-Way” making $400,000 to do nothing when he gets out.
"pimp gonna pimp and a ho's gonna go" Iceberg Slim
What Richards special IT contract doing?
Also- Special shout out to Sister R today for some reason.
This whole "crew" ran and won election on the fumes of the Obama years.....hopefully, Jackson - the the entireity of the USA will see the public corruption for what it is - and stop voting for their race or gender, and start voting their values. Hundreds of thousands of good black folks are glad to see these losers go down.....but they can't talk about it in public. That's the problem. If you put your race before virtue...you will reap the consequences.
The sketch artist is very talented. The likenesses are spot on.
Watch he will be one the first people pardon in ‘29.
Where's Kali Akuno?
Win!
TDS Alert!
There is no parole nor "half-time" in the federal system, bright spark.
Lumumba was a very good example of how a democratic republic government will not succeed. His antics should be a taught as a lesson of how NOT to do things. How long will the people remember that being a radical racist is not beneficial to a society?
Theres been a couple. Try and keep up.
Through the First Step Act, signed by President Trump, there is now early release in the Federal system.
Unfortunately, other Lubumbashi are getting elected in cities such as Seattle and New York City.
Man a lot of y'all are just realizing that a plea deal has a quid pro quo. Yes, the defendant pleads guilty, but typically for a lowered sentence than they'd face if they went to trial. Otherwise what's the point of taking a plea deal? It saves the system time and effort and saves the taxpayers money. These guys are going to be federal felons the rest of their lives regardless of how long they spend behind bars. Do I wish they'd be locked up for 20? Sure. Was I also just a little worried they had something up their sleeves to weasel out of a guilty verdict if it went to trial? Absolutely.
Federal felons the rest of your lives until the Presidential pardons come in, which is frequently what happens with public corruption cases.
Does this mean we're not going to get the hotel built?
What kind of a loser goes to jail for $50K? What kind of populace looks up to a loser who goes to jail for $50K? A person like Chokwe claims to have all the answers to make a government work, but can't find an honest way to put $50K in his pocket. What a joke of a city. It's inhabitants deserve every single thing they currently have.
I have a question. It seems this started with a request for bids, but there was little to any interest. The deadline was extended, and the Feds came in and asked for the deadline to end, correct? My observation is this - the lack of interest to the original bid process shows no one wants to invest in Jackson. If there had been bidders in the beginning, would the Feds have gotten involved? What prompted the Feds to set up the sting operation?
It's a sad day for Jackson in addition to all the other sad days we wake up to. My compassion is for the families. Perhaps proceeds from the garbage contract and Siemens settlement will continue to support the families. At least two of the guilty will still have the opportunity to become wealthy from their memoirs, teaching, and speaking engagements.
Sadly, too many black politicians decided to learn from their white predecessors. Wealth and power are intoxicating temptations that too many can't seem to resist. In the mid 70's when there were ethical leaders of influence in both parties, we had a chance to end this racist, divisive, nonsense. Ironically, those on the bottom of both totem poles of both parties still are the losers.
The whole bidding process was initiated by the feds as part of this sting. It was never real.
Having been there, done that, I know for a fact that the majority of proscecutors are terrified of going to trial. I personally know of one AUSA who was the chief of the criminal division in a large district in a different state who had a nervous breakdown when a defendant wouldn't take a plea, and resigned. Seriously.
The US attorney spoke on plea deals.
Grifters will grift.
Nothing untrue was stated. Lumumba will be disbarred as well as Owens. He won't be able to practice law again with a conviction.
None of them will serve ANY time in prison! What a joke!!
I don't think you know what a democratic republic is.
The alleged racist was wearing a white suit. Bwa, ha, ha. Posting for a friend.
My only question is after a federal felony conviction can a lawyer regain his license or is it a permanent disbarrment?
10:28 .... soooooooo what.
You think it's "real" when the cops get some user to call his bud to buy some .... bud.
Antar sold the voters that he was doing an honest job. And you still cover for him. disgusting.
KF, we live out of state after whole life in Jkn, thank God! We rely on true news from you for many years. I read different things on WLBT @ CHOKE, is it 5 YEARS AND RESTITUTION OR IS IT 5 YEARS OR RESTITUTION. This and or is on everything we read. Just read FBI comments they posted AND. Thank you for all you do for such a dying state. Can we hear your answer.
Sounds like “Cheap Meat Eatin’ Days” are coming to Chez Lamumba.
