Finnegan gets to begin again.
The Mississippi Parole Board never fails to disappoint. Remember that guy who pleaded guilty to ripping off day care centers and churches by selling them fire suppression systems that didn't work? He pleaded guilty in February and was sentenced to serve seven years in prison. However, under Parole Board math, that means he was released last week.
Insurance Commish Mike Chaney issued the following statement on February 28:
Daniel and Sherri Finnegan, owners of Finnegan Fire Safety Equipment, entered guilty pleas in Rankin County on Tuesday, February 24, 2026. Daniel Finnegan was sentenced to twenty (20) years, with seven (7) years to serve. Sherri Finnegan was sentenced to five (5) years, with four (4) years suspended and one (1) year to serve.
The plea agreements encompass charges filed in both Rankin and Madison Counties. Across the two counties, twelve (12) charges were filed against Daniel Finnegan and twelve (12) against Sherri Finnegan, stemming from six separate cases.
The Finnegan’s were arrested on August 21, 2024, for allegedly selling and installing faulty and used fire suppression systems in commercial kitchens throughout the state.The systems did not work and were not tested before being placed into service, putting people at risk in the event of fire. Finnegan sold many systems to daycares and other businesses. The couple appears to have targeted minority-owned businesses and owners who have a language barrier.
The investigation showed that more than $343,000 was paid directly to the couple by confirmed victims. It is important to note that this figure does not represent the full financial impact, as some financial documentation could not be obtained. Furthermore, many victims incurred substantial additional costs to correct and remediate deficient installations and to bring fire protection systems into compliance.
Restitution ordered for Daniel Finnegan totals $67,853.95
The Parole Board turned Finnegan loose on July 14.
It's a good thing no kids died.

Prison is an invention of modernity that has demonstrably failed. Any reasonable society that was not profiting from the penal institutions would institute short drops for felonious behavior and by consistently culling the bottom, your society will improve in every metric.

Does this logic apply to all cases where restitution is ordered? Or just crimes that are 'non-violent?'
The only reason no one died is because the Finnegan's victims were lucky they didn't need their so called safety systems to actually work.

Prior to modernity, all felonies were punishable by death. So do you really want to go back to the good old days?

10:36 everything you stated is incorrect. Prison has not failed. The failure is allowing people who should be in prison to instead be outside of prison, as in this case. Prison works, if you put criminals there and keep them there.
10:36 here, perhaps I am misunderstood or there was a failure in communication. For clarification: the hypothesis that prison rehabilitates or reforms humans at scale is a demonstrable failure. Further, forcing law-abiding citizens to pay for the upkeep of felons is a crime in and of itself. As for historical punishment or "old days" cited above, recidivist criminals make me completely indifferent to whether they live when they do not care one bit whether the law-abiding citizens live or die.
Empathy for those who show you none, is in fact weakness.

All things considered, $275, 146 net is still pretty good income for six months of service to the state, or whom-ever...Do the Finnegans owe income taxes on the $275?
