After months of speculation, the Mississippi Bar is finally moving to revoke Jody Owens' law license.
The former Hinds County District Attorney pleaded guilty to conspiracy in federal court after he took bribes from undercover FBI agents and paid bribes to other public officials in a sting operation. Conspiracy is classified as a felony.
The Bar filed a formal complaint with the Mississippi Supreme Court yesterday. The complaint states:
9. Once a final judgment of conviction is entered and any appeals have been concluded without reversal, the Bar will certify same to the Court, pursuant to Rule 6(d), MRD.
The complaint asks the Mississippi Supreme Court to immediately suspend Owens from the practice of law and require him to repay the Bar for expenses associated with the filing of the bar complaint.

It's insane that he was allowed to stay on as DA after he was indicted. Mississippi may be the only state with no mechanism for removal. And don't give me any of this "innocent until proven guilty" crap. A DA is expected to have the highest ethics.
Suspend? Revoke or disbar only.
Doesn't Chok claim to be an attorney as well?
I am betting the Magnolia Bar gives him a commendation and award. They will also give him a proclamation of good work.
No Mississippi Bar but he does have the Cigar Bar to fall back on--
He stayed on like five days before resigning. Chill out.
9:02 I am also disgusted with the DA's actions, however "innocent until proven guilty" is just as important for a DA or public official as for the average citizen. Even Presidents have been indicted, and none were removed from office. An indictment is an accusation, nothing more. The Law supposedly protects us all.
I assume the Bar will suspend Lamumbo, too.
He will be suspended, then in about five years (wink, wink, nudge, nudge) his suspension will disappear in the middle of the night from a smoke filled back room at Nico's.
Jody can have a fit but it's too late to acquit.
There was still some drug money that needed laundering. What a joke.
Sorry but it's a totally different ball game when you are a DA. By virtue of the job they are SUPPOSED to be doing.
Can "part-time" DAs be suspended also?
An indictment isn't an admission of guilt. He can only be disbarred after a voluntary admission of guilt or conviction.
Guess he'll be left running the "cigar shop" after prison
He can be a "part-time" jailhouse lawyer without being a member of the bar, right?
Has anyone asked The Hon. Kennuf STOKES for a comment on Dem dope boys?????
It takes the MS Supreme Court a while to enter an order of disbarment, so this is the logical first step. Both Owen’s and Lumumba will be disbarred because they were convicted of a felony by pleading guilty. I’ve been very critical of the MS Bar in the past for moving much too slow on these types of things, but they moved surprisingly fast on this one.
Jody almost got away with it but no cigar.
I bet chockwe gets on a private plane and high tail it out of the country and never to be seen again.
No, Mississippi is NOT the only state with no mechanism for removal. Besides, removal following an indictment is not cause in most states; however, a temporary restraint from acting might be an acceptable process.
Yes, and he will be next. Hopfully the MS Bar will move as quickly on Baby Chock as they did on Jody.
Yeah but he’ll suck at it since he never actually did anything but launder drug money and take bribes.
No loss. Maybe Iran will take him, or Nigeria or Somalia.
Maybe he could borrow that FBI plane again. Right?
How much does he owe for the filing? I’m sure he’ll say he doesn’t have any money.
Who gives a hoot about Anatar and Jody. Where is the indictment of Phil Bryant and Deborah and Bret Farve those state actors. I can she why blacks are concerned there doesn’t appear to be equal justice. However, whoever it it that does a crime ought to be punished.
What law did Brett Favre break? The volleyball court deal was approved by IHL and the Attorney General. The speaking engagement was a bad contract. No evidence has appeared showing conspiracy between New and Favre to defraud DHS. Prosecute him and you run into the same problems you did with DiBiase.
Dude regardless of what you say, Brett Favre and Phil Bryant are crooks....
Undercover agents went out their way to set up Jody Owens so he could recruit the Mayor and other council members. They were dumb enough to fall for that little chump change. Their sentences could have been up to 100 years had they not pleaded guilty. Sounds so fishy ....
Set him up? That drunk motherfucker couldn't stop running his stupid mouth.
KF - blur the curse words ...My kids & their friends read your blog.
Poor Jody will have to find another "part-time" gig.
