Jackson Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba is conducting his regular press briefing. The presser is live-streamed below.
* The city is suffering from 19 fallen trees due to inclement weather. Three trees have not been removed because they are wrapped in power lines. Thus Entergy must remove the power lines before the trees can be addressed. The Mayor said he expects more trees to fall.
* JPD Chief Joseph Wade discussed crime. There were 44 homicides a year ago. Homicides have been cut to 22 homicides this year. 20 of the homicides are solved. "We are now getting back in line for a city our size," said the Chief.
* The city is halting demolition of the old Coca-Cola plant on Highway 80 after testing revealed there could "potentially be" asbestos in the structure. Additional testing is taking place.
* The Mayor celebrated "Economic Development Week" in Jackson. The Mayor will pass the planned events as well as the Fallen Officer memorial since he will be out of town this week.
* The Mayor refused to discuss the appointment of Tariq Abdul-Tawwab to the position of Deputy Public Works Director.

At least he is consistent with his transparency. Right?
wow
Considering that he is totally useless, don't believe the city will miss the lame Kush duck one second should he decide to take the rest of his term off.
20/22 Homicides solved is actually pretty impressive. Seems like were on pace to be at 60 homicides which is a bad but better then the 120+ in recent years.
Thank the Capital Police. Thats the difference.
THIS JUST IN... Mayor Expects More Trees to Fall
Every tree down is entangled in power lines? The tree on Northside damn near killed a kid. I didn't see any powerlines entangled in the pictures, but there damn sure were not any cones, flashing lights, or anything else marking it. It was reported earlier in the day.
Shocking that the old Coke plant building contained asbestos
Shock-Way will follow up on all these issues once he returns to town-
By now @2:13 it should be very familiar to you that Antard's modus is to blame others when the city has dropped the ball.
Does anyone think that some people learned a lesson by electing someone, so entrenched in racial divide, into a mayoral seat? He would rather attempt to carry on hatred than actually improve the life of those who chose him for leadership. Chockwe Antar Lumumba was a complete failure for those who think he was working on their behalf. Sadly, many of those same individuals are so filled with hate, they’ll never allow the truth to flourish. Can the City of Jackson, Mississippi recover in this lifetime?
Given the precipitous drop in population, one would think the number of murders would come down eventually.
So Chokwe hired one of Rukia's minions to be the Deputy Public Works Director? Shocker.
Figures don't lie, but liars figure. Is the homicide figure to be believed? It wouldn't be the first time crime stats were manipulated by COJ officials.
“Cut in Half” is a poor choice of words by the Mayor when referring to the bloodiest city of all time.
The fallen tree on Northside Drive is eerily similar to the manhole cover incident that took the life of Frances Anne Fortner.
You are correct !
Considering how bad the city is, at keeping track of dead bodies, maybe this is simply a case of Murderatorial Mismanagement? Maybe somebody lost 'The Book', AGAIN? Maybe half the murder vics were never spotted, because they've been rotting in the weeds, on the tens of thousands of vacant lots scattered across 'The Most Radical City on the Planet'?
Or, is it a matter of NUMERACY? Previously, it was expected that city employees would be capable of addition. But as with every other previously-assumed competency, maybe the expectation of employees' being able to add-up the entries on a list, is runs counter to 'Equality of Outcome', and so has been jettisoned, along with all the other previously-assumed competencies.
I say, "Look to the Buzzards!" One surefire way to count Jackson's murdered, would be to analyze buzzard droppings for human remains. Surely, a grant can be gotten, to send those buzzard turds off to someplace in Yankeeland, where people-with-good-sense can "run the DNA". Divide the number of dead revealed in the Buzzard Scat Analyses, by whatever standard number/percentage is assumed to be the product of Homicide (as opposed to 'Natural Causes'), and you have a good 'Dead in the Weeds' number to add to the Homicides Total.
I'd start with the droppings left by the Buzzard flock which famously roosts on the laundry room of the old Courthouse Racquet Club (they prefer to roost in the safety of Flowood, but to dine in Jackson, where dead bodies are more plentiful).
I mean, if scientists could isolate Covid fragments in Brazilian sewage, a year previous to the supposed 'Lab Leak', then surely they can end the mystery of Jackson's Missing Murdered.
What he meant to say is "the homicide victims have been cut in half."
He didn't say it. I did. blame me
Chokwe despises law enforcement. I'm not surprised that he's skipping the fallen officer's memorial. Last year, he walked out before the ceremony had even finished. I guess it's no surprise considering his dad defended the man that killed Louis Skinner.
Antard had zero influence over this if it's true. Now he wants to take credit
The ONLY reason that homicides are down are due to Capitol Police.
That's not accurate. Killings in the CCID are up drastically compared to the rest of the city.
This time last year, CPD worked 1. Right now, they've worked five.
Crackheads up 200%
At the rate the homicides were going no one would be left to kill in 20 years! Of course homicides will drop! The conviction/ arrest rate is looking good because it’s the same fools doing the killing!
Henifin got rid of the incompetent Tariq so fast....
Homicides are down only because the victims didn't die, due to poor markmanship.
@5:50 and UMMC knows how to triage gunshots because practice makes perfect
I bet Horhn fires Abdul fairly quickly. Hiring someone on your way out the door is an in your face move. This is just Chokwe’s little political theatre. Mark my word, there will be other petty things he does before he’s out.
If convicted and sentenced without delays Lumumba could theoretically enter federal prison as early as 2027. If his trial begins in July 2026.
Typical Antard.
I'm curious about his "press woman's" employment options after his reign ends in July.
It hurts me every time I see the sweet girl's name - Frances Ann - who died due to the COJ failure to do minimum maintenance on city roads. Nothing can fix that but glad people still remember that needless death.
For what it's worth, WLBT as of this morning lists Jackson homicides as 27, not 22.
An Asbestos Assessment was completed for the Coca Cola Plant in 2010 using US EPA Brownfields Assessment Grant money that the City of Jackson had received. I know because I was part of the team that did the assessment. And, yes, there is absolutely asbestos on the site. The types and locations were well documented. If the City has lost their copy of the report, I'm sure that a copy can be obtained from the MDEQ or the EPA or the company that performed the testing.
Apparently Canton is taking up the slack.
Surely the mayor misread some report. It is more likely the report said: homicide victim cut in half.
What Thalia Mara doing?
Chapel Ridge Apartments owes $734,000 for past due water bills. That money sure would help maintain the water system.
A new mayor cannot be sworn in soon enough.
Have statistics actually been posted online in the last 5 years?
