Attorney Bridget Todd only handled two criminal cases before she represented Carly Gregg last year.
Gregg killed her mother and shot her stepfather last year. A Rankin County jury convicted her of murder and sentenced her to life without parole. Gregg was only 14 years-old when she murdered her mother, Ashley Smiley.A review of the dockets in Madison, Rankin, and Hinds counties reveals Todd only represented two felony criminal cases prior to her representation of Gregg. The cases are:
She represented Jordan Morrison after he pleaded guilty to a 2021 charge of possession of a controlled substance in July 2024 but before he was sentenced. Morrison received non-adjudication.
Next up is the infamous Beth Anne White case. White killed a mother and her baby on Highway 18 in Hinds County while driving drunk. Todd served as co-counsel with attorney Kevin Camp.
That's it. She had all of one criminal trial under her belt when she represented Carly Gregg. However, she handled approximately 145 cases in Hinds, Rankin, and Madison county chancery courts. Thus she has been primarily a chancery practice lawyer for her entire career.
Gregg is appealing her conviction and sentence. However, Todd never entered an appearance for Gregg in the appeal. Although Camp entered an appearance, he apparently has been replaced by Neshoba County attorney James Murphy.
Murphy filed a motion that asked for permission to supplement the record submitted to the Court. However, the Court denied his motion. The Court stated since the record had not yet been submitted to the Court, there was no need to approve the motion. Murphy is free to supplement the record before he submits it to the Court. A little bit different than denying an appeal.

Sounds like a case of drive-by reporting by WLBT. Thanks for keeping us informed, KF.
Such a sad case. She should be in a mental institution and getting treatment instead of a jail.
This case should get reversed on sentencing only at some point because of ineffective assistance of counsel. Maybe not on direct appeal, but would be fertile ground to dig on a PCR.
You get what you pay for Carly!
Nope. She is where she needs to be. Only argument from me will be over the sentence. She was sane when she did it. Hard to beat that video. They had four visits from Dr. Webb and yet they switched experts at the last moment.
Crazy how people say she needs help and not jail. Do you have the same sympathy for the kids that commit murders in Jackson as well? Or is Carly different somehow?
@KF wrong
She’s a child and totally incapable of being held responsible for her actions.
KF - I can think of maybe 3 or 4 attorneys that are capable of this type of trial in this state. None would have even have gotten close to a not guilty verdict let alone a chance for Carly to be released from prison at some point. You would be looking at no less than $1-3 million with very little, if any guarantee. In a trial with stakes that high counsel should have played the race card. Sure it would have reeked of racism but in a county that's full of them why not?
@2:12PM She would have walked with Steve Farese representing her.
14 years old is different.
@4:06 PM not just 14 but also on the edge of womanhood and who is has lost control of herself due to hormones and desperately wants to fit in and find her identity.
If Bill Kirksey was still alive. That man beat the feds in very high profile case about the time Jackson really started to fall apart.
May 15, 2025 at 2:12 PM, you're wrong. She's a scheming, cold-hearted murderer. If left to grow without restraint, all she will get is better at killing. She is where she needs to be, put away for the safety of the public.
She got what she deserved and was premeditated according to video !
@4:06 We all had hormones. Most of us don't plot to kill our parents. She's where are belongs. She knew exactly what she did. She called her friend to look at the body. That's not hormones!
2:12, I see what you are hinting at, but anyone saying she needs help and not jail is a bleeding heart liberal democrat and is certainly not basing anything on the fact she is a little White girl.
Who's is the best criminal defense lawyer in the area? Dale Danks was good in his day, right?
So this lawyer had only one criminal trial before the Gregg case, and she was making the interview rounds on podcasts and YouTube legal channels like she was some kind of accomplished barrister. Sad.
Remember how much she kept getting wrong? The bogus Brady motion. Didn't know she could have gotten more time or gotten the court to pay for a brain scan? It just went on and on.
I thought attorney Bridget Todd said she considered herself as Carley's new Mother, and was going to adopt her.
Any updates on that ?
An unsung hero who shaped Mississippi’s history was Jewish Attorney Alvin Binder. If Jackson had a “GOAT” defense attorney, he would be it. He bugged KKK meetings by crawling under their house where they made the bombs for Beth Israel. He unsuccessfully defended Wayne Williams aka The Atlanta Child Murderer but he raised so much doubt we still not sure who did it even today.
I think Tom Fortner at his prime was one of the best criminal defense attorneys I could think of. He revolutionized indigent criminal defense as a PD.
Both lawyers should lose their licenses. Does anybody know anybody over at the Ms. Bar Association that has any guts.
Best criminal defense attorney in the area? The Fareses and Buddy Coxwell are at the top now. Rob McDuff puts in work. As others mentioned, Tom Fortner in his prime was very effective as was Bill Kirksey before his passing. Alvin Binder was before my time, but I heard the stories. Dennis Sweet Sr was a formidable criminal defense lawyer, but he moved on and age caught up with him. Lee Abraham in the Delta was tough and like him or not, Ed Blackmon was highly skilled as well. Other than maybe the Fareses, MS doesn't have any big name regional criminal defense lawyers. If you see someone with significant money behind the prosecutor's 8 ball, they will usually bring in someone with a national presence like Brian Steele of GA or John Kecker from LA. However, they are beyond the means of most criminal defendants in Mississippi. One of the most memorable defense wins was seeing Mikal Watts beat the government defending himself. Beating a federal charge is impressive, but a lawyer beating a federal charge representing himself is astonishing. Nice trip down memory lane for a Friday morning.
Alvin Binder would be a great Tarantino movie - late 70s polyester fashion, the crazy hairstyles, big bug eyed glasses and cut throat, high stakes political moves in Mississippi during the height of Jim Crow and your a young Jewish Attorney from the Delta bout to take all of it on.
Funny....I have always thought the law and punishment for breaking it was to protect the innocent....not for rehabilitation of the guilty!!
to 9;30...so they lost a case. so what. happens all the time. now you want them disbarred?
tell me, im sure you are aware of the certain lawyers and law firms that were fully engaged with and in the lamar adams , madison timber ponzi scam. that was outright fraud. have you brought that to the attention of the bar?
alll the people making excuses for this girl need to relax. in the next few years a kindly and benevolent governor will commute the sentence in this matter and she will be released.
by then her go fund me account will have enough money in it to make a big contribution to the mississippi republican party which will ensure the commutation of sentence.
11:58, wrong. She will be released by some lame liberal judge, sue the state and start an Only Fans account. We will see her become a millionaire, speak on how racist MS is and die of an overdose at 35.
Carly and the kids from Jackson can receive help while they are locked up.
That's awful pedantic
3;10 has a very overactive imagination and lives in a world of fantasy rather than reality.
William ('Bill', 'Hoppy') Kirksey was the best criminal defense attorney to pass our way. I grew up with him and watched and followed him until his untimely death at a relatively young age.
He had to take over a case that Kevin Camp blew. He won.
Chokwe, the elder, was thought of as a decent criminal defense attorney. He managed to get a light sentence for a black Durant thug for killing a Texas boy who was coming through town with his girl on the Trailways.
The late Tom Royals was also a great defense attorney.
