Bill Crawford: Gaetz Nomination Puts Guest on the Spot

President-elect Donald Trump’s nomination of Matt Gaetz for U.S. Attorney General puts Mississippi Congressman Michael Guest on the spot.

Last week, Gaetz suddenly resigned from Congress just days before the House Ethics Committee was due to vote to issue an investigative report on Gaetz. Guest chairs the Ethics Committee.

In May of 2023, the committee reinstated a review paused in 2021 pending a DOJ review of sex trafficking charges. In June the committee explained its review would focus on whether Gaetz engaged in sexual misconduct and illicit drug use, accepted improper gifts and sought to obstruct government investigations of his conduct.

Per House custom, Gaetz’s resignation ended the Ethics Committee investigation and, possibly, its report.

Pressure is building for the committee to release it.

“Senators have an important decision to make, and I think they should have all the information necessary to make the right decisions,” Republican Rep. Dan Newhouse told The Hill.

Republican Sen. John Cornyn, a senior member of the Senate Judiciary Committee that will consider Gaetz’s nomination, told reporters that he “absolutely” wanted to see the committee’s findings.

It would take at least one Republican vote on the 11 member committee to release the report, assuming all five Democratic members voted for release.

The steadfast Guest could be that vote.

In a statement, Sen. Dick Durbin, current chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, calling on the House to preserve and share its findings, said, “The sequence and timing of Mr. Gaetz’s resignation from the House raises serious questions about the contents of the House Ethics Committee report. We cannot allow this valuable information from a bipartisan investigation to be hidden from the American people.”

If Guest’s committee doesn’t act, Cornyn said the Senate should subpoena the report.

Either scenario puts Guest on the spot to act.

Still and all, Republican criticism of Trump’s choice could derail the nomination before the Senate gets around to any hearing next year.

It was “an unexpected pick that took many, including fellow House Republicans, by surprise,” reported Fox News.

Calling it a “reckless pick”, Republican Rep. Max Miller, a Trump admirer, told CNN, Gaetz is "a guy who is literally worse than the gum on the bottom of my shoe."

GOP Sen. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska told the Associated Press, “as far as I am concerned,” Gaetz is not a serious candidate.

Guest remained mum on the controversy. “With the confidentiality that surrounds the committee,” Guest told The Hill, “I can’t give you any information of significance.”

“The simpleton is crowned with folly; the wise man is crowned with knowledge” – Proverbs 14:17.

Why do TPTB always go after their enemies with allegations of sexual misconduct? This is how they attacked Julian Assange as well. The reality is many of the people investigating Gaetz are corrupt. They were likely regular visitors to Epstein Island. And they have likely received millions of laundered tax dollars from Ukraine. They are terrified because Gaetz has the evidence to prosecute the corrupt politicians in DC. And he will do so.

Mr. Crawford makes excellent points, but I don’t know if the Senate (or a senate committee) can subpoena a document from the House.

This is why The People are so fed up with government, folk such as you writing “opinion” like this about “the politics.” Y’all can’t and don’t get shit done for scrapping over the shortcomings and perversions of your “friends on the other side of the aisle.” Apologies for all the sneer quotes, but it’s just what all of you deserve.

Guest and Gaetz? Oh, yeah https://twitter.com/ImMeme0/status/1857943840486769021

Trump has all but given his permission by saying he might "reconsider" Gaetz.
Some days the irony is so great as to make you think you imagined it.

Gaetz was investigated by actual law enforcement and was not indicted. So what is there for this committe to do except attempted political homocide?

Anonymous said...

Gaetz says he wants to "go easy on marijuana, tough on Big Tech, and I would go after the deep state." Guest has the following track record: Voted YES (1 of 35 Republicans) establishing a national commission to investigate the January 6 attack on the US Capitol. 175 Republicans voted no.

Voted No to adopt a resolution that declares the office of the Speaker of the House of Representatives formerly held by Rep. Kevin McCarthy to be vacant.
What side to you think Guest is on?

If Guest does not support Gaetz he’ll surely lose his next run for the House. Mississippi voted for Trump, his policies and his cabinet picks.

Gaetz won’t even get a hearing.

Yeah, it’s TikTok but it’s an interview with Gaetz giving a tour of all of the congressional members he would investigate. Guest is highlighted because of his questionable stock trades. Gaetz wants to go after insider trading by congressional members who sit on committees and have insider knowledge that would affect stock prices. They’re all dirty.

Anonymous said...

One thing we can be sure of, whatever is best for Guest’s constituents, that’s what he’ll vote against. The guy just shows a lack of judgement, at least from a political perspective. While I think he did a really good job as the Madison-Rankin DA, he’s been a terrible disappointment as our congressman. Any republican who doesn’t have the judgement to vote against Pelosi and Benny Thompson, doesn’t have the judgment to give me any confidence.

Gaetz isn't qualified for the job. He's a showboat and a grandstander. Even if we agreed 100% on the issues, I wouldn't want him for the job. He will cause more problems than he solves. You know the arrogant boss who takes credit for everything and will treat the help like crap? That will be him. There are plenty of capable Republican Attorneys General (Not ours) and conservative lawyers who could do the job and do it well.

Anonymous said...

Please tell us how Gaetz is any different than your namesake nom de plume?

This country like guys like Gaetz. You are just out of touch. Gaetz easily wins elections.

There is still right and wrong. Michael Guest being on an ethics committee is wrong. He has proven, by letting Sheriff Bailey get away with perjury, he has no right to be on an ethics committee. That’s all I’ve got to say about that,

Anonymous said...

5:47P Agreed. Michael Guest knew or had plenty of information and knowledge about Bailey. Everyone knew about the Goon Squad for years prior to their discovery on a hate crime. Michael Guests shouldn’t be on an Ethics board.

This is when republicans run and hide. Then throw people under the bus and beg for forgiveness. They need to learn from trump’s example and keep moving.

Now let’s be real, would you hire Gaetz to represent you! I bet Elon or Trump damn sho would not. It is Trumps choice as president elect, he ain’t paying for Gaetz services! You are!

Anonymous said...

Guest needs to show some balls on this one and do the right thing.

Anonymous said...

I've seen this tactic so many times. Remember the candidate in Alabama the group of women came out and accused him of this sort of thing? And it worked. He lost the election. But instead of pressing the issue (which shouldn't have been just about an election) the women disappeared overnight, never to be heard from again. They knew it wasn't true, and having achieved their ends they went away. That's very telling if you ask me.

when adam shift was condemned by the republicans in congress, guest was one of seven who did not vote to condenm him.
Guest is worthless and spineless.
I wrote in someone else rather than vote for him.

Anonymous said...

Ethics can not be conditional. Michael Guest has no concept of that reality. Why do we citizens, and our government tolerate this. These are the very reasons people distrust the leaders in government. We deserve better.

Many Republicans have yelled "groomer" and accused Dems of being pedophiles to shut down any conversation they don't like. Now, you have multiple people in the House talking about Gaetz and how he likes them young. There is an attorney for the alleged victim who says his client testified that she was trafficked. All of a sudden it isn't relevant. It shouldn't be hard to find folks who don't have these kinds of allegations against them. And, besides that the stuff we know Gaetz has done should be disqualifying but it likely won't be because lots of spineless folks when it comes to Trump.

Anonymous said...

Surprised you're of this position KF. Trump had zero experience for the job, yet may become the greatest POTUS of all time if he's successful bringing us back from the brink. "Qualifications" went out the window years ago and were replaced with actual Managerial Courage to get the job done no matter who gets upset about it. Outsiders are what are needed that have no "qualifications" connecting them to the filth.

Anonymous said...

Not a Matt Gaetz fan AT ALL. BUT, if a similar scenario reversed presented itself, i.e. Mississippi Democrat Congressman Bennie Thompson was “put” “on the (same kind of) spot,” would we be hearing anything about it from Bill Crawford?

Michael Guest hates Matt Gaetz and with reason. Gaetz has brought to the surface Guest's "insider stock trading" abusing his department while using insider information to feather his bed.

THIS IS WHY GUEST HATES GAETZ:

@7:56 call me a RINO but if given a choice between an (alleged) child sex trafficker and an (alleged) insider stock trader, I pick the guy who isnt raping children.

Anonymous said...

Yet, heads an ethics committee! The height of the ridiculous!

Kingfish said...

Going to clarify something. A couple of comments said Guest voted for the Jan 6 bill. Not exactly. There were two bills. The Dems pushed one that was to investigate only Jan 6. Guest voted against that one. The Republicans had an alternative bill that would investigate Jan 6 AND the BLM/ANTIFA riots from the summer of 2020. Guest voted for that one. Minor point, I know but just pointing it out. Fire away at him.

Hate this nomination, the guy just looks like a sleazy used car salesman. As a taxpayer I would like to know what the Ethics panel found, and yes I am a republican and voted for Trump all 3 times.

Anonymous said...

Pretty simple in my mind, if the House Ethics Committee spent taxpayer money investigating and compiling a report that was fixing to be published before he resigned, then the american taxpayer has a right to know what was in the report whether you like the guy or not.

Anonymous said...

@3:44 These reports are nearly all full of lies. This is entire charade entirely political. If there were anything there then he would be indicted for a crime and on trial.

Anonymous said...

I have seen the disrespect that Gaetz shows Honorable members of congress and Honorable Secretaries and even the Honorable AG Garland. His disrespectful tone proves he is unfit and a threat to democracy.

Anonymous said...

“ I did not have sexual relations with that woman…”

Anonymous said...

I have mixed emotions on Gaetz. He often exposes slime balls such as Mr. Guest. He also shoots his mouth off when it serves no purpose.
As for his qualifications, he is far more qualified than the bulk of Biden's identity politics nominees.

I was molested as a kid and I'm in favor of castrating pedophiles. I'd like such castration to be done publicly and without sedation. Then again, if there is no evidence and it only serves political purposes (see Clarence Thomas and Brett Kavanaugh) then falsely accusing someone for political purposes is flat out wrong.
If Gaetz is a pedophile, castrate him. If not, confirm him.

Anonymous said...

Honorable, you throw that word around carelessly. Until they show otherwise, they are all backstabbing, blood sucking, hen house robbing, dog stealing, rusty kneed, goat smelling, weasels.

Anonymous said...

If he’s a friend of Michael Guest, no worries, Guest will cover for him.

Anonymous said...

What about the money, and the time, spent by Biden's so-called justice department? They didn't find anything on the man, or that crooked bunch would have charged him.

Anonymous said...

@7:29 The term “pedophile” is used far too often and often incorrectly. Gaetz is allegedly accused of sex with a 17 year old. Pedophiles are very specifically attracted to prepubescents. A 17 year old is physiologically an adult, fully capable of procreation.

8:37 pm You are obviously not a woman or else you'd know they returned to a normal existence. Women don't like to air their "dirty laundry" in public save for the few gossips who enjoy airing everyone else's. I know you still don't get the distinction since you are the male version of the town gossip who relishes feeling superior by telling people how bad everyone else is.

Anonymous said...

Matt Gaetz's own sister-in-law says he's a creep. I wouldn't say that about my brother-in-law unless he actually was one.

Anonymous said...

Guest has begun to waffle on releasing the report. No balls just as a suspected.

Anonymous said...

Better to have brains than balls. (See Sunny Hostin's retraction on ABC's "The View".

Anonymous said...

Being a member of either party as an elected official requires that you not use your own judgment but rather bend to the will of party leaders. Frankly, no elected official that aligns with a political party has guts or a mind of their own.

Anonymous said...

So, the ethics committee refuses to release the report on Gaetz investigation. How ethical is that? These type of actions are why citizens distrust the government. We deserve better.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
