United States Senator Roger Wicker issued the following statement.
The American people are still trying to make sense of the shocking assassination attempt on President Trump. A security failure of that magnitude demands honest answers and swift accountability. Unfortunately, the Director of the Secret Service has not been properly forthcoming about the events leading up to the crisis in Pennsylvania.
In the days after the violence, the leadership of the Secret Service, as well as the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), met with members of the U.S. Senate. The briefers outlined a timeline of events leading up to and following the shooting. Senators had many questions, but only a few of us were able to ask them before the briefers ended the meeting.
The rest of our questions must be answered. Straightforward explanations of what went wrong would help fill in gaps in our understanding of the tragedy. Proper accountability would also help. For the Secret Service to begin repairing trust with the public, its director must resign. Despite the obvious breakdown in protection, she has refused to step down.
Basic Questions Remain Unanswered
By the time senators met with the Secret Service and the FBI, the basic details of the situation had been made clear. A man was able to climb onto a nearby roof and shoot a former President of the United States. The bullet tore through President Trump’s right ear, very nearly ending his life.
In our briefing, officials tried to deflect responsibility to local law enforcement. The Secret Service regularly partners with municipal police departments, relying on them to direct traffic and manage an event’s outer perimeter. Ultimately, protecting the president is the job of his security team. As the officials talked with senators, they acknowledged that the security operation was “a failure,” and they described the mistakes that led to such a preventable situation.
Sixty-two minutes before the shooting, authorities photographed the would-be assassin, marking him as a person of interest. Inexplicably, he was allowed to wander suspiciously in the background without being investigated. Numerous videos taken by rally attendees clearly show the shooter moving to the top of the sloped roof. Why weren’t officials on the stage notified at that moment? Why had agents not been watching that building’s blind side to begin with?
Agents on the stage should have been alerted and should have escorted President Trump to protection. It took the gunman seconds to fire eight shots. Compared to that moment of terror, the officials’ hour of awareness looks like a lifetime.
Pressing Officials for the Facts
The assassination attempt was the biggest Secret Service failure since President Ronald Reagan was attacked over four decades ago. Members of both the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate have initiated inquiries. The Speaker of the House has requested a classified briefing. Congress must continue demanding explanations from those responsible for keeping the president safe and from those tasked with investigating this event.
Responding to Tragedy with Heroism
The gunman aimed his fire at President Trump, but the former commander-in-chief was not the only victim. The scope of the tragedy expanded when a rally attendee was killed. That man, Corey Comperatore, was a husband, father, dedicated citizen, and volunteer firefighter. Without hesitation, he shielded his wife and daughters, saving their lives at the cost of his. He died a hero. Two other members of the crowd were injured and are recovering.
Mr. Comperatore displayed the brightest virtues in the darkest moment, but no one – president or bystander – should have been put in such a position. The event in Pennsylvania was a direct assault on our core principles – the free exercise of speech, assembly, and political participation. The American people deserve answers to their questions, and a thorough review can help prevent such an attack from ever happening again.

Wicker should resign first!
I have said it before and I will say it again... women have NO place in this line of work. They also don't belong in the military, law enforcement and prisons (unless it is a women's prison).
Equal intellect is not equal strength and courage. PERIOD
Everyone should be calling for an independent investigation regardless of party of belief. There is way too much suspicious in this situation. I am no Trumpy, but they certainly want him gone and are terrified of what his second term could bring on the Swamp. I would be too if I was a corrupt politician. Wicker should be calling for much more than this.
Senator Low Hanging Fruit to the rescue!
I love her quote that "the buck stops with me"...and then the next answer to NBC's question of whether she would resign "oh, no!"
Sounds like the buck needs to be refunded and passed to someone else more qualified, someone which wouldn't be hard to find!!!
Maybe some members of congress should resign for critically underfunding the secret service to extent they have to rely so much on local law enforcement. Typical political pandering.
As with the rest of the world, work ethic hardly exists any more. In this case, I fear that these security people had become too comfortable and were just going through routine motions. No excuse that this was allowed to happen.
Wicker is almost as much of a "tag along" as Fitch is.
Glad to see Sen. wicker showing some purpose. thank you sen. wicker.
Now, perhaps Sen.cindy Smith would follow
No chance that spineless gladhander rep. Guest would.
disturbing how the DOJ, CIA, FBI, USSS just blow off the legislative branch and operate like the Stasi
Trump praised the secret service last night. As big as his mouth is, I’m sure if he had a problem, the world would know it. So what are we talking about here?
What's done is done. All efforts should be made to immediately find out what happened on J13, but this is not going to get resolved during this administration.
Preserve the evidence and get ready for Jan 2025. Anyone who has celebrated this should be investigated and charged to the highest extent of the law. J6 is the perfect precedence that has been set. Thank you, Dems!
Pray for Trump and this country. Repeated attempts and false flag counter-efforts appear to be imminent. Pray for Biden, as well. He is clearly not well and being exploited through his confinement to the presidency and campaign.
Inside job. Some on on Trump’s team is a snake. This has nothing to do with the director. ask Tupac and Biggie.
Wicker needs to retire, and Cheatle needs to go back to her Pepsi route.
She’s better at her job than Roger is at his.
Cheatle should be removed from office.
3:07 - If they all put out a press release calling for the woman's resignation, what will be the purpose, impact, take-away or result? Not a damned thing. Just something about which they can later say, "Well, you'll remember I called for her resignation".
You sound like the type of lightweight who would be really impressed with such a meaningless signal.
She's not going to resign. She should, but Biden appointed her, and she knows who her boss is. And the Dems don't want her resigning because, politically, they would see that as giving their opponents a victory.
FAILURE? Wicker's "inquiry" sounds more like damage control - seeking to limit and redefine the question - than anything else. We all know what this was, and Wicker's trying to make it sound like merely the failure to catch some "lone wolf" "loner" "misfit", than what it really was.
Where is that guy from? Never heard anything about him in the news before.
Wicker is spineless, just sees a bandwagon opportunity to jump on and wave, "me too".
Michael "I won't vote to censure Adam Schiff but I always vote to give Planned Parenthood money" Guest hasn't demanded her resignation.
She's not going to resign, and this administration is not going to fire her.
Their mutual protection depends on it.
If they fire and condemn her, she turns on them. If she resigns, they can no longer control her.
DHS/Mayorkas doesn't seem to want her to testify. She knows that lying to congress could result in her imprisonment.
They're hoping stonewalling combined with voter's short attention spans will enable them to glide past accountability once again. They're wrong.
There's so much that smells like a rat with the failed Trump assassination attempt.

Too many separate failures/incompetencies to have occurred naturally.
She needs to return to her "mall cop" job. Social media posts indicate that she was on "Dr" Jill Biden's security detail when Sloppy Joe was VP and they became good friends. When Sloppy Joe became POTUS "Dr" Jill had hubby appoint this idiot to her current DEI position as director.
AS IT IS WITH ALL GOVERNMENT EMPLOYEES........no one will be warned, privately reprimanded, publicly reprimanded , disciplined, suspended with pay, suspended without pay, sued, fined, have the pension forfeited , fired , or prosecuted regardless of what total bozos they are, and how bad they screw it up.
thats precisely why everybody wants to work for the government.
no matter how incompetent you are , you will never be accountable.
Last man jumping on the wrong boat.
When the feds discipline an employee, one of their options is to transfer the employee to another city or state.
This is how it works. All expenses are paid, including purchasing the employees current home, moving the employee, family members, and household goods to the new location, even paying any utility deposits for the new location, etc. etc.
The feds know how to crack the whip.
I think we all appreciate Roger Wicker once again pointing out the obvious. It may have taken him a week or so to see it himself, but that doesn’t lessen the importance of his insight.
A few things are coming out about the shooting. One big one is the majority of security for Trump were not SS. Guess someone listened when Benny asked that Trump's security be taken away. Replacing the SS with temporary help was the next best thing.
#PassTheTorchRoger
She may have to go when people learn she had more temporary hired people on as security for Trump than she had SS.
This incident proves that there is the potential upward mobility for mall cops.
DEI hired agents are dependent on Cheatle's blessing, but if protected VIP is terminated because agents are short, fat &/or cross dressed, she will say shooter was too un-woke?
Too tangled a twist of reasoning to even pretend this wasn't what it was.
