An account of a pit bull attack in Ridgewood Park appeared on social media this week. Actually calling it a "pit bull attack" is somewhat misleading as the attack involved not one, not two, not three, but four pit bulls. Of course, the victim got no help from JPD. She posted:
Does anyone know if Animal Control is a functioning program? Our neighbors 4 pitbulls got out of their yard, came into mine and mauled one of our dogs and me. I spent 6 hours in the ER and my dog is in the emergency clinic.I have complained to the police in the past of their aggressive behavior. Last night the police didn't do anything.
UPDATE Pit Attack: We have done everything we know to do to get a response from Animal Control regarding the attack to me and my dog last week. We have called Animal Control daily leaving messages. We stopped by the 4th Precinct to ask for help and what our options are. The 4th made a call to Captain Buckley with our information. No response from anyone.
Tonight at least one of the Pits was out of it's yard. Our dogs would not go off our deck to go potty in order to get ready for bed. We called the police, they sent a patrol car out to talk with us. Same story: call Animal Control. The officer said they don't make contact with the owner of dangerous dogs, that is Animal Control's responsibility. That's a little piece of information that no officer has told us before. I don't know how long I have before I might need to start shots for unvaccinated dogs. We need to obtain the necessary Vet information for those dogs. Wednesday I have surgery to repair a severed tendon in my finger. Today, León started to get up to move around in our house, that was a very good sign and made us so happy. He's a large 90lb Dane/Lab mix. He fought hard but was no match for 4 Pits. It still haunts me to see in my mind when he finally couldn't move any more and his cries became moans. I hope NO ONE ever has to experience that with their fur baby. I will be making myself a nuisance to the various departments in order to get someone to respond to our needs.
This is not the first time JJ has reported on pit bull attacks in Northeast Jackson. Unfortunately, the city has not taken animal control seriously for quite some time. 2020 WLBT story.
JPD finally got off its ass and did its job. The victim posted an update yesterday:
León UPDATE: First of all I want to express my deepest gratitude to all of you for your concern for my and León's well-being. His injuries are improving. This morning, we finally got in touch with someone who immediately took control and sent individuals out to pick up the dogs. The dog owner/breeder lied by saying that our dogs are out all the time. Our dogs are NEVER out. We don't walk them because we live on the straight away "drag strip" of Colonial and we can't use the side streets because of the pits and other roaming dogs. My husband took the officials out to our deck to show them our fence and his fallen down fence. The official said he'd seen enough. Only 3 dogs were removed from the property. We don't know why that determination was made. We do have an attorney who will handle our affairs. Again, thank you for your concern and love. The night I returned home from the hospital, I laid in bed feeling so alone. We don't have family here, we're transplants from NC via years living in Nicaragua. When the attacks were happening, I screamed and screamed for help and not one neighbor came out of their home. I felt alone and isolated that night but you all have made me feel part of a community.
JJ's advice to the victim is to carry a gun when taking her dogs outside. If those monsters attack, shoot them and shoot to kill. One hates taking such measures but this is what you have to do when the city abdicates is responsibilities.

Thanks heart wrenching! I'm a BIG animal lover but when they turn to beasts because their caretakers allow it -- I'd pull the trigger too! They pose a huge threat and are a danger. There is no place for them in this world.
With Pit Bulls, the owners can say anything they want, but it is not if, but when they attack.
Sounds like both the dogs and the owners need to be removed from society
@10:29 AM - Spot on.
For those of you in denial, google "pit bull kills child." Most of them are family pets.
This is why many cities don't allow pit bulls.
Please don't tell me that it is the owner that caused them to be vicious killers. It is genetic!
The only good pit bull is a dead pit bull.
The truth hurts, as it should!
what @10:29 said. how many examples do we need?
Move immediately. No matter what.
Get the f--k away from your thug neighbors and their killer dogs.
I am a firm believer that there are no bad dogs - just bad owners. Owners need to be held entirely responsible for the actions of the dogs. In this case, the owner needs to be prosecuted as if the owner personally and intentionally perpetrated an assault with a deadly (canine) weapon. Unfortunately, the animals have been allowed by the owner to become viscious and unsuitable life among humans, and they must be destroyed. The owner should also bear all costs for their destruction and disposal.
By holding owners criminally responsible, we might be able to discourage irresponsible dog owners.
^^^ 10:30
Maybe lock the dogs and owners in a cell with the good squad?
Pit bull - the #1 choice for thugs and bullies.
Shitbulls and shitbull owners deserve to hang.
Where is Chokwe and his talking points? LuDUMBa… this lady should contact a lawyer.
Three years ago a pit bull dog crawled under my fence to play-fight with me. It shredded my legs with long claws so I kicked it very hard in its upper chest with steel toed boots. It just got excited and came back for more. Finally, I put a strong stream of water on it and the dog mercifully sprinted back to its hole and slithered under the fence.
Get a gun and kill them on your next encounter. Much cheaper happier ending for all.
The problem arises because we are so spoiled in this country to beleive that our personal freedoms are unlimited i.e. we can own any pet we can afford. That includes snakes, alligators, giant lizards, wolves, big cats, and yes dogs bred for killing. Until we take this matter seriously and require insurance and strict liabiliy for the actions of dangerous pets we will continue to experience these horror stories because the selfish owners don't give a damn. At the moment of ownership require them to have million dollar insurance coverage and attach criminal liability for attacks and they will give a damn and get a goldfish or a lapdog.
My parents live nearby and had a similar experience (although not as bad, thank goodness). JPD/animal control has been no help with the roaming dogs in the neighborhood - what's the point of having laws if we don't enforce them!
Shoot. Shovel. Shut up.
The solution to many problems.
The dirty little secret is that there are people raising pit bulls for sale all over Jackson. Anything over two adult dogs is a kennel. There is an ordinance outlawing kennels in the city but it is not enforced. The police know all about it but do nothing because they feel they don't have to.
I wonder what Capitol Police would do if this happened in their jurisdiction.
Ban Pits. No place for them in society. Guard dogs are alarm systems, not mercenaries.
Own a gun, protect yourself. Don't put a wild animal in my neighborhood.
Pits are heavily concentrated in bad parts of town. Not to deter crime, but because the culture promotes primitive displays of strength/aggression.
Flexing a wild animal is weak shit.
Killing the attacking dogs, while justified, won't be the end. The victims of the attack will have to answer to the AK-toting thug dog owners the next time they stop at a gas station in Jackson. They're going to cost the dog owners a lot of money on the fight circuit.
Every U.S. citizen has the right, by law, to protect themselves and their family by what ever means deemed necessary on their own property.
In today's society you can take a human life and get away with it. Castle Doctrine.
If you take the life of a dog that is attacking you, your family or your property you will probably be taken to jail for animal cruelty, discharging a firearm in the city limits and no telling what other charges would be tacked on. You would be bastardized by the folks in the neighborhood that the offending animal hasnt gotten to yet for protecting your family AND then have to worry about having to physically fight the dogs owner at some point.....how would that end if it happens on your property??
10:29 - I am the owner of a pit / chow mix. As the owner of one of the two most aggressive breeds - and I urge other owners to read this - they. are. nuts. They are four-legged liabilities. I do not take this dog out in public. She has full run of the house and the back yard which has an 8-foot high chain link fence. She's a wonderful dog and I have treated her with lots of love. She's cuddly and sweet. But on two occasions when strangers came around, I've seen her become unhinged and very violent. I do not teach or condone this behavior. There is another personality lurking under that fur and it is frightening. Be responsible and don't give me that "it's how you raise them" crap. You fall for that, you'll either be missing half your face one day out of the blue or you'll be paying out everything you have in a lawsuit. I love her with all my heart but I don't trust her at all.
11:55 - You are correct. They feel no pain.
Waiting for the animal abuser/owners to file a suit against the city and lady for getting the dogs shot.
Waiting for the animal abuser/owners to file a suit against the city and lady for getting the dogs shot.
shoot the damn thing
Golden Malrin fly bait mixed into ground beef. You’re welcome.

Perry "Drank a Couple of Beers at Work While Euthanizing Dogs"
Jackson Animal Control Officer Paul Perry pleaded guilty to First Offense DUI and Destruction of County Property in 2016. Mr. Perry has been under fire recently for refusing to seize vicious dogs that kill pets in Jackson.
JJ obtained a copy of the police report through a public records request. The report is posted below. The report states Perry drove his Nissan Titan over a road sign and into a ditch on January 4, 2015 on Yandell Road in Madison County. He walked away from the scene of the wreck. A Madison County deputy went to Perry's home since he lived only a mile away from the wreck. His wife said he was not home and called him. Perry told his wife he was at the neighbor's house next door and that someone stole his truck. The police report states: http://kingfish1935.blogspot.com/2019/02/perry-drank-couple-of-beers-while.html
This reminds me of a case years ago before I retired from the Ridgeland P.D. There were several old Yankee Yuppie Women living in the " Dinsmore " neighborhood who decided to adopt a stray mixed dog who was running around the neighborhood. They named him " Mr. Hope. " All of these " Nasty Yuppie " liberal yankee women were taking turns feeding " Mr. Hope ", and they would all take turns taking Mr. Hope to the Veterinarian for his healthcare. The problem was, is that these Yuppies refused to keep Mr. hope inside their homes or on their property, and would let him roam the neighborhood with no supervision. Well, as it turned out, Mr. Hope had a violent streak, and hated children. He kept attacking one of the neighbors two young daughters. Every time the children would walk outside to play, they would have to run back inside because Mr. Hope would attack them. The neighbor, who feared for his kids life and safety, had called Ridgeland Police and Animal control hundreds of times, but nothing was done about " Mr. Hope ". Eventually, the father of the two little girls was forced to take matters into his own hands, so, after receiving no help after all of his request, he shot and killed Mr. Hope. Can you believe that the Nasty Old Yuppie Women pressed criminal charges on the kids father for killing Mr. Hope. I only saw a fraction of the court case in City Court, so I don't know how the case turned out. But I do know that a couple of City Court Judges and City Prosecutors recused themselves from the case because apparently the accused father or the Nasty Old Yuppie Women, or both parties, had political connections.
Bad suggestion JJ. Then you face retaliation from an un educated owner. Spike some baloney and sling it over there.
Pit bulls should be legislatively banned, sterilized & shot on sight.
the Taurus judge and the taurus public defender revolver pistols work wonders on pit bulls.
they are chambered in .41 caliber and will shoot 3 inch .410 shotgun shells with #4 bird shot.
they pattern very well.
can't miss with those pistols.
plus, in between pit bulls, you can carry it in your vehicle to deal with punks jacked on crystal meth.
to 3:!8....i remember that case.
i watched the trial.
defendant was acquitted and rightly so.
he made a beautiful shot at about 25 yards.
doubled lunged him.
lights out.
the defendant should have been given a marksmanship award rather than a prosecution.
I don't like this new format worth a damn!
@ 10:43. Nope. They are .45 caliber and take .45 Colt and .410 ammo. They are not all 3". #4 birdshot is not reliably effective as a defense load.
Also, here's how you deal with this
https://www.thetruthaboutguns.com/cul-de-sac-turned-ok-corral-armed-homeowners-and-pit-bulls-face-off/
This new comments format is crap. This is what you get for contributing to the JJ cause.
A couple people have commented that shooting the dogs will result in retaliation by the owner. Those of us whose immediate reaction is “shoot them” would have done so immediately and this wouldn’t be a story. I can almost guarantee that a person who calls their pet a “fur baby” would never have the guts to shoot. They probably don’t own a gun. The pit bull owner is probably pretty scary looking to them and they know deep down they are no match for this thug. They should bite the bullet, take the loss on their house, and move.
You think I do? Don’t have a “jump to comment” option anymore. Google added extra steps for uploading photos as well. I frigging hate engineers who think they have to do something when they are bored. New website is in planning now.
Shoot the dogs immediately and if the owner complains shoot the owner.
Every breed of dog that we have today was a result of selective breeding. Different breeds were bred for a purpose. It isn't an accident that some dogs are different than other breeds. The selective breeding took many years. The way a breed pf dog is raised does not change the traits the breed was developed for. People should learn a little about dog breeds before deciding to get a certain breed of dogs. If a dog was selective bred for hunting their instinct is to hunt. It is bred into them. Same goes for a dog selective bred for running fast. The pit bull was bred for fighting and killing. The people who brought the pit bull into this country brought them in for fighting. They were selective bred for that trait. They are the best of the dog breeds at what they were selective bred for. They are not a lap dog . They are not a breed for people looking for a pet for their kid. They are not good for people who think they can raise a certain dog a certain way and change the whole breed that has been selective bred for a certain purpose for hundreds of years.
to 2;37.......yes those dogs have been selectively bred that way.........just like my tarus public defender pistol has been selectively engineered to waste a pitbull.
The Taurus Judge is NOT a good choice for dealing with pit bulls or thugs. It will certainly do the trick if loaded correctly and used with accuracy. Number 4 shot is much too small to be effective. It would only kill at arms length as a rifled pistol barrel disperses shot very quickly. If you have one and are enamored by the idea of using a .410 for self defense, load it with buckshot. There are only a few pellets as the small shotshell size means the buckshot are stacked. However it might do. A better round in these pistols is .45 Colt. The pistol is not .41 caliber - it is 45 caliber. Accuracy isn’t great in them with the pistol round as the rifling is intentionally slow to reduce how quickly the shot pattern spreads. This pistol is really better suited for killing snakes than large predators. It only holds five rounds. If attacked by door pit bulls or an equal number of feral bipedal predators, you could have cause to wish for more rounds.
Also, “you can’t miss with a shotgun” is a fallacy. Try patterning any shotgun at close range on paper and see how easily you can miss. Even a minimum length (18”) cylinder bore shotgun will put all the shot in a fist sized wad at ten feet. The Judge will spread out much faster but the shot pattern will be too thin to be effective very quickly. Again, pattern one on paper and you will see.
Bottom line - you can make the Judge work if that’s what you have but there are much better choices available for self defense. Oh, and .410 shells have been scarce as hen’s teeth and expensive to boot since the COVID induced supply chain shortages began. You can buy 9mm, .45 ACP, 10 mm, etc pretty easily. 9mm is the best “bang for the buck” in cost for practice ammo and hollow points. Buying 50 round boxes of hollow points is also most cost effective as is buying in bulk.
