Jackson Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba is holding his weekly press conference right now. It is live-streamed below.
* Mayor Lumumba addressed the "reports of unpaid invoices." He said there were 470 invoices of $9.8 million earlier this year. He said his administration has reduced them to $703,000.
* Hizzoner discussed Ward 3 Councilman Kenneth Stokes' proposal to require convenience stores to hire security guards. The Mayor said the city attorney was studying the issue since other cities have been unsuccessful in defending such ordinances in court.
* The Mayor met with JATRAN's union. He said the two sides were not that far apart.
* Mayor Lumumba said he is running for re-election next year. He said he expects more than four candidates.

On convenience stores, I hate to disagree with Councilman Kenneth, as he makes more sense than anyone with the City these days, but I'm not sure that the burden of hiring security should fall on business owners. They own a private business, pay taxes to the City and most likely have poor infrastructure surrounding said business. Unless there is something I'm missing in regard to these businesses (are they selling drugs or gambling in the back?), I think it is the City's responsibility to insure a safe environment for businesses by increasing patrols.
Can we get a FOIA for these alleged collections? Trust, but verify.
The convenience stores aren't killing people. The community is killing people. Recently, 3 youths attacked a security guard at a convenience store and killed him. Taking these folks out of the community is the only answer.
Chief Joseph Wade said Roy Love, 60, was providing security at M&M Food Mart in the 500 block of Cooper Road at about 1:30 a.m. Monday, when he approached three teenagers and asked them to leave.
“They attacked him, took his weapon and fired on him with their weapon,” Wade said.
Officers acted on a tip and searched the area of Woody and Monticello drives, where they took three teenagers into custody. Kadaris Cohen, 16, Trent Wooten and Zaylon Norton, both 17, are all charged with capital murder, according to Wade.
The City has "collected" or "wrote off" $9,097,000? I'm calling BS on the fact that reduced means collected. I have no idea why I am so skeptical. Like the poster above, someone do some homework and figure this out.
Sad news that he is running for re-election.
Kim Wade for Mayor!
1. When stop and robs are outlawed, only outlaws will have them.
2. Stop and robs don't kill people; people kill people.
No business should have to hire people to protect their business. The city should protect the city, the businesses, and the people from crime. It isn't the fault of the business that there are so many crooks on the streets of Jackson. It isn't this business that causes Jackson to be the murder capital in the U.S. The reason there is so many crooks and thugs in Jackson is because the city cops are not doing their job. The judges let the crooks go if the cops ever do decide to arrest one. Who thinks having security guards on one business is going to make Jackson a safe city?
Nothing the mair would like more than to announce that everyone is responsible for policing their neighborhoods, pothole repair and infrastructure needs.
Hey 3:05.. Chockway isnt talking about collecting money owed to the COJ-That is against his constitution- He is referring to payments made by the COJ to whomever may have sent a bill to t he COJ. Basically, no one has been doing a darn thing and the bills pilled up so they are patting themselves on the back for writing a bunch of checks to cover past due bills- ( Hemphill is getting ready to hit the COJ for almost $1.5 million in late fees alone) - Wonder how many duplicate or improper payments were made in this process to clean up the o/s AP...inquiring minds want to know.
All the security in the world is not going to stop a drive by on a C-Store.
Businesses are as much a victim of neighborhood crime as individuals. Making unreasonable demands of business (like 24 hour security guards) is the same as blaming the business for the crime. Even if the courts allowed it, the result would be more businesses leaving Jackson.
So long as the store owners or employees are not the criminals, they're going at it backwards. The stores should demand city protection, not the other way around.
The city hasn’t collected squat
The Northside Sun is reporting there's another $1.5 million owed to Hemphill Construction for late fees. This hasn't hit the city council agenda yet - solid reporting.

Lil Choke will perish trying to debate Kim Wade.
I agree wit the Mayer, let the peoples that on those stores pay for they on police. Us people in Jackson don’t need to.
Since when is this mayor concerned about success in the courtroom as a basis for taking action?
Does this apply to M-Bar as well! City is responsible for protecting citizens as well! The media coverage about Smith Wills is a joke. Did anyone do a punch list to compare invoices to work performed such as bathroom renovations and stadium seating. Anyone can say their heart is in the right place while they are getting paid under the table. We all know no one spends millions out of their own pockets without getting something in return. That is ludicrous and Hank Aaron would be ashamed of the state of this facility and grounds!
The convenience store closure suggested by Stokes made X (formerly Twitter) today. The comments weren't favorable. It is hard to survive here for so many unnecessary reasons.
There are more JATRAN union members than customers.
I don't understand the rationale in declaring a service station a public nuisance and demanding its closure simply because crimes have occurred there. If that is the criteria, then M-Bar should be closed. If the service station closes, it will leave another abandoned, vacant building that will attract vagrants and even more crime. It will also remove one more resource from a community that is already suffering from a lack of access to needed services. Put the blame and accountability where it lies --- with the criminals, and what has been/is a lax judicial system,
Chuck Norris for mayor,
According to the Marxist mayor, the root cause of violence in the brave new city is:
1. Gun shows
2. or Open Carry
3. or White Flight
4. or C-stores
#4 for the win.
If the city is mandating security on site from 12 midnight to 5 AM, then the convenience stores should just close at midnight and reopen in the morning. Reward can't be worth the risk anyway.
This entire administration is clueless. Oh drive by shootings at a convenience store - persecute the business even though the city police department is incompetent and the business pays taxes for protection. I'ts like Aaron Banks called JXN Water "piss poor" for a cut roadway that damaged a car, while the city can't follow up those repairs and handle the streets (because it's the city's responsibility - Stokes is correct). I don't think Aaron Banks needs to be labeling anything piss poor while he can't stay out of his car drunk and Angelique does the same (and can't pay her bills). What the fuck is wrong with these people???
Spit-n-Git stores and gas stations should give on-duty cops a $5 credit for stopping by for coffee and a snack. And security cameras are in their own self interest. But to mandate the hiring of a security guard? No way that's constitutional and as others said, it's the community's fault for armed cockroaches killing each other.
Does anyone remember when the legislature passed the "Landowner Protection Act" a few years ago. Contact your local conservative representative if your family member gets murdered at one of these properties because they shut the door to the courts.
5:57 - Back in the day when I was rollin' my beat on the Charlie shift, the convenience stores kept hot coffee for the police. It was free and if they were out, we'd just help them out by making some more. It helped us stay awake and it bridged the gap of absence, rather, we stopped in regularly and developed a rapport with the folks working there. It was effective crime-prevention and it worked. Not saying this business doesn't operate by that mindset because honestly JPD is comprised of mostly sloppy, smelly, lazy people that roll by you doing 20 miles over the speed limit going nowhere and they can't be bothered to enforce anything as simple as a speed law. Seeing them on the streets these days makes me ashamed that I ever wore that badge. I will insert the obligatory acknowledgement of exception for those few that are still trying to make a difference. Thank God for Capitol Police.
Back in the day police enjoyed the free coffee. Now days they want a little more than free coffee. If you cannot cough enough cash they do not care about protecting you.
