Jackson Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba is holding a press conference right now. The presser is streamed below.
* Mayor said "we are all frustrated by the litter we see" as he announced a new campaign, Stop Trashing Jackson. Mayor Lumumba said the city is rolling out a "robust plan" that will launch on March 4. He said the city is prepared to shut down streets used as dumping sites. He made a mention of controlled burns. Parks & Recreation Director Son Harris asked for residents' help. He said his department is responsible for maintaining right of ways. Often his workers clean up an area only to find it completely trashed a day later.
* City workers removed over 800 tires from a property on Bailey Avenue.
* Residents can take their tires, vehicles, etc to the rubbish landfill on I-55 near Byram. The first ten tires are free. The city will charge $1 for each additional tire.
* Mayor Lumumba said the $800 million federal appropriation for Jackson's water system is the first of its kind in American history. The Mayor gave credit to his administration and lobbyist but made no mention of the congressional delegation.
The Mayor said the EPA "hop-scotched" over the state due to the state's history of racism and not any alleged incompetence on his part.
* The Public Works department must be "re-imagined" since the city no longer operates the water system. The Mayor will appoint an interim director in the next few days and hire a recruiting firm to find a permanent director.
* A town hall will be held Wednesday at 6 PM at Forest Hill High School.
* CJ Lemasters asked about the Capitol Complex bills. Mayor Lumumba said the bills create apartheid and "colonize" Jackson. He said "it reminds me of a colonial power" and "we are just supposed to pay taxes to the king" while "we pay taxes to the king." He ended by calling it "Plantation politics at its finest."
* A reporter asked the Mayor about the Water Manager's financial management plan and equity billing. The Mayor said he had not yet seen the plan.
* Nick Judin asked about the bill, #2889, that will create a Jackson utility district. The Mayor called the bill "plantation politics" and a "colonial power" again. The word "overseer" was used as well. Hitting back at the state, he said it wasn't Jackson who misused TANF funds and gave it to friends.
Kingfish note: Um, plenty of cities such as New Orleans, use utility districts governed by boards.
* Scott Simmons asked the Mayor what he thought about billing people based on property values versus usage. Mayor Lumumba said he "reserved judgement."

After a "picture of someone's license plate" who was "seen littering" is submitted and "put into a database," the [owner of the car] can be quickly prosecuted. What in the holy hell could possibly go wrong with this plan?
Jesus Christ what a bad idea.
Jackson IS litter.
The Forever Needies are a comical lot.
I’m betting another $600 million from Uncle Joe would get Jackson cleaned up!
Hitting all the key words and phrases so far:
-"We need citizen's help"
-Federal money
-Mississippi be rAcIsT
-Interim
-TOWN HALL!!!
-More rAcIsM
He is just saying what his supporters want to hear. Why the surprise?
That press conference was a bigger load of shit than all of Jackson’s dump sites combined. He is pathological.
Definition of Plantation Politics: The understanding that institutions including higher education are based on the practice of plantation life, slavery and slave economy, whereby operationalizing the purchase, sale, safety, and invisible exploitation of Black bodies.
Hardly applicable to the Capitol Complex or Utility District, but he was on a roll...
I'm not paying $1- I'm kicking them out the back of my pick-up as I speed down I-220
I loathe the man but he I wont deny that is indeed a cunning fox.
It really is like the Emperors New Clothes.
The world is too afraid to call anyone an idiot because, its racist and will not be challenged.
So glad I left when this unavoidable future became clear to those of us that were not willfully blind.
If I was a pissed of failure to mankind, I would cry racism as well.
The very saddest part of this is people believe him.......
@1:55 you forgot plantaion, colonialism, overseer. I have a few words for the mayor your plan sounds like marxism, socialism, banana republic politics.
It's shameful the only thing the Mayor is good at is holding a press conference and throwing out the race card but somehow still gets Jackson voters to fall for his charade.
So (1) the Utility District is plantation politics. But, his newly found, favord friend, Ted Henifin stated just three weeks ago that once his appointment is complete, there should be a utility district formed to operate and manage the water system because, according to him (and in his expert opinion, I am sure, since he is supposed to be one of the smartest in the field) the City of Jackson is not competent or able to operate the system.
(2) Mayor claims he has not seen the financial proposal of Henifin - the one Henifin submitted to the court, had a major press conference to explain it, and everybody else in the city has seen it? Amazing. Or more properly said, Bullshit. Mayor has seen it, and had discussions about it - but Lying Lumumba never has a problem with trying to avoid an issue by denying knowledge.
2:11 That was freaking awesome!!!
While I agree that plenty of city’s have a utility district, perhaps New Itleans isn’t the best example to use. Just sayin’.
All Antard does is flap his gums and holler rasism...He cant find his butt with both hands! If Antard had been doing his job ( which he has clue about) the problems addressed herein would be minimal compared to what they are today- GFYS Antard!

Did the mayor say if this “plantation politicization” was better, or worse, than the current “democratic plantation” he is a part of now?
Yes Chockalock, Jackson does does need a straw boss- be he white or black. Obviously , there needs to be a leader taht can get shit done- you obviously can not even come in out of the rain. You and your sista and chief of staff are useless.
Chock-way
Standing in the gap between what is good and wholesome about Jackson- and the white colonists.
Quit playing around with Antar and his minions, and just put Jackson into receivership.
Ineffective leadership --- be it black or white, democratic or republican, does a disservice to the constituencies they are elected to serve. In the case of the mayor, he is merely sticking with what seems to be working --- playing to the national media, blaming others for his ineptness, and relegating the problem to it ALL being about race. Perhaps sensing that many of his constituents who have supported and defended him against the racist Tate Reeves and the republican establishment, are becoming increasingly frustrated with the city's lack of, or slow response to basic requests, he decided to tout the new liter initiative, and step up the rhetoric using the plantation analogy to stress the "us vs them" nature of the conflict. Any other approach would require the mayor to acknowledge his errors, do some commonsense planning, hire qualified, competent people and listen to them. In other words, do the hard work, accept responsibility for his inadequacies and be accountable. Too much to ask? It appears so.
Today I told my wife Jackson is, "a flushing toilet."
She replied, "That feeds into an overflowing sewer."
Check the Cameras.
Look for MDEQ to have an opinion on those "controlled burns"...
Lumumba is a child amongst men. Yall keep voting for him. Jackastan is a dump.
All cities are created by the State and owned by the State. Why is the race card the only one that Jackson knows how to play? Is the Mayor saying that mismanagement is a black/white matter?
Love when the racists use “colonizer” as their code word, don’t beat around the bush and just say it. But good luck with the trash, they’ll just move to another location around Hinds county to dump it.
That presser was funny.
Did anyone else think Antar is feeling helpless and very frustrated with reality ?
Seemed he was trying to get an immediate national interview on MSNBC.
CJ Lemasters asked about the Capitol Complex bills. Mayor Lumumba said the bills create apartheid and "colonize" Jackson. He said "it reminds me of a colonial power" and "we are just supposed to pay taxes to the king" while "we pay taxes to the king." He ended by calling it "Plantation politics at its finest."
No, Mayor, it's someone trying to help get control of the now out-of-control crime in the City. Even you cannnot deny that crime has dramatically increased and only gotten worse. Even your own Police Chief is asking for help. Now when the State comes in and tries to help get crime under control, you scream racism ? Damn, you are a race-baiting idiot.
Nick Judin asked about the bill, #2889, that will create a Jackson utility district. The Mayor called the bill "plantation politics" and a "colonial power" again. The word "overseer" was used as well.
No, wrong again, Mayor. Even Mr Henefin has suggested a utility district. By your own admission, the City has failed to maintain its water system for the past several decades and administrations. In other words, the City has proven it is not competent to handle its water system alone, so the expert on this issue suggests a utility district. That's not racist; that's helping solve a problem that you yourself admit has gone on for decades. Many other major cities much more successful than Jackson have established utility districts like the one suggested here and found them to be beneficial. But once again you have to race bait.
The only plantation is the democrat party and the field bosses are the poverty pimps and race hustlers.
I drove thru Jackson via Interstate 20 on my way to Dallas. I was saddened by the amount of trash on the sides of the interstate. I lived in Jackson in the 80’s, what I saw Saturday was sad! I looked over at the old Lodge Apts off West Highland dr. Looked like a bomb went off over there.
I try to bypass Jackson whenever I can. I don’t like feeling sad!
How do all you bleeding heart liberals in NE Jackson, Belhaven and Fondred feel about being called Colonists?- And participants in creating an apartheid city?
Antar may be a Colon-ist, as he seems to have his cranium inserted in his rectum on most occasions. Hard to see what's going on around you that way, Emperor.
When there is no plan, raise the race card. Right?
“Quit playing around with Antar and his minions, and just put Jackson into receivership.“
HB 1020 is a step in that direction. The ACLU is mass texting Jackson voters begging them to call and oppose the bill if that tells you how worried they are about not getting their slimy hands on a piece of the Jackson pie anymore.
This is the most unAmerican, unRepublican, bill I have ever seen. When did the GOP become pro big government?
7:00 pm, that bill should become law, but it has nothing to do with receivership.
Antar is tilting at windmilles here. Talking about the 'trash' in Jackson, noting that the city hauled off 800 or whatever tires in one neighborhood.
So what?? There are 5000 or more tires dumped on McDowell Road, near the UPS facility, and have been there for a year or more. And the city has done nothing. Trash alongside the roads in Jackson is terrible - a tabletop picture book could be made for viewing over a good glass of Maddog 2020.
If he continues this program,I will weekly post pictures of roads in Jackson that are impassable due to the trash IN the roadbeds, not alongside (yes, it is alongside as well, but hey, who's counting) until he cleans up all of them. Which we know will never happen - gumflapper is only talking about what he wants to do, but not about anything he WILL ACTUALLY do.
But glad to hear that he knows nothing about the water situation, the new billing system, or the proposed utility district other than it is nothing but a racist activity. Par for the course.
@10:38pm
Well said.
Why is this family determined to destroy this city? They are hell bent and picking up speed.
Good to see the grownups are planning to take over and run things. Way past time. The majority who vote in Jackson aren’t capable of self-government.
5:18 Good for you. That's exactly what the king told George Washington.
8:51 is correct. I vote the grownups walk away.
This is lose-lose for conservatives.
Walk away. Let nature take its course.
January 31, 2023 at 8:51 AM, you must be old to know what the king was saying to George Washington.
5:18 is correct
Somebody should ask Chokwe who paid to remove those waste tires. If he says Jackson, ask him where Jackson got the money.
5:18 is correct.
The sad thing is that most of our state leadership is only slightly more competent than Lumumba. When Phil Bryant was in office it was probably a draw.
Sherman and Grant burned Jackson in hours (May 14, 1863). What's taking Lil Choke so long?
Incompetent, even in his chosen occupation of Destroyer of Civilization, Collapser of Bridges and Streets, Spreader of Marxism and Raw Sewage, Poisoner of Water, Vetoer of No-Votes and Liar of Record.
Which among these deserved soubriquets shall grace his epitaph?
This is needed. Badly. This and much more legislation like it. But you can count on the alphabet organizations and, with Biden in office, the DOJ to have this tied up in Carlton Reeves' slow-motion "court" for years and years and years. Then with appeals, possibly all the way to the SCOTUS, no one here over the age of 50 will live to see the end of it. By that time Jackson will look like something out of a Mad Max movie.
7:42 said "This is the most unAmerican, unRepublican, bill I have ever seen. When did the GOP become pro big government?"
How so ? A governmental agency (The Public Works Dept) is already running the water system, or at least it should be but has proven for decades that it cannot. So, the State is simply proposing another type of governmental agency, a Utility District, to run the system. It's not enlarging big government but simply replacing an incompetent agency with one that hopefully will be better and more competent, hopefully being the key word. At this point and in light of the City's decades of failure on this issue, why not try another management model ?

Are you unaware of the Republik of New Afrika plan and Lumumba Sr. affiliation? This is just continuation of a plan that Sr was unable to implement.
I got confused reading the mayor's issues. I thought Antar was a king. Or at least a prince.
I grew up in Jackson. JPS graduate. I don’t give a rats ass what color skin someone has. But I don’t go into Jack town anymore for anything unless it is medical services I can’t get in Madison or rankin. It’s obvious the leadership of Jackson is just incompetent. Police and courts are incompetent. Managing water is way past their level of competence. Fair, they inherited these problems but they get worse every year. So the mayor, judges, pastors, legislators can claim race if they want but truth is state needs to start running Jackson if there is can’t hope of it recovering. Mayor knows he can’t fix it or lead it but he’s pissed about losing payoff money. The people of Jackson deserve better.
WLBT this morning announced that Mayor Chuckles still has not had time to read Henifin's plan regarding Property Value billing so he cannot comment.
I guess the media should ask LaMumbles when does he plan to read it?
Seems rather important. But he seems more focused on garbage tires and racist buzzwords that CNN will hear and invite him on.
Y'all really picked a winner with this one, Jackson. Enjoy!
The people of Jackson don't deserve better 10:42.
Are they holding rallies to point out that the Mayor is LYING nonstop?
Are they demanding he be removed from office?
Or
Are they calling the state "racist" when the state tries to help them?
They are drowning and the selected a leader that is refusing to use the life raft because it is not the right color. So let them drown.
Maybe we can drag the lake and start over when that happens.
