Jackson Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba issued the following statement.
Today, Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba is joining a coalition of current and former mayors across the country to honor the Americans shot and killed every day, as well as the hundreds more wounded as the nation continues to deal with an epidemic of gun violence. He stands with the nonprofit Mayors Against Illegal Guns by declaring June 3, 2022, National Gun Violence Awareness Day.
Sadly, gun violence has become so common in America that it’s nearly impossible to mourn the victims before another tragedy occurs. Mayor Lumumba supports a comprehensive approach to public safety that enlists the cooperation of all levels of the government and community, including school and church leaders and residents. He supports concrete steps that can be taken to curb the ease of access in purchasing a firearm and stricter gun laws that are supported by a majority of American citizens.
The statistics are clear: Americans are 25 times more likely to die of gun violence than those of other developed nations. Every day in America, there are more than 110 Americans shot and killed, alongside more than 200 who are shot and wounded, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Nearly 40,000 Americans are killed with guns every year and 85,000 Americans are shot and wounded as a result of gun assaults, unintentional shootings, attempted gun suicides and shootings by law enforcement, devastating families and communities across the country.
The majority of gun homicides are concentrated in cities - half of all gun homicides took place in just 127 cities, which represented nearly a quarter of the U.S. population. Within these cities, gun homicides are most prevalent in racially-segregated neighborhoods with high rates of poverty, according to Everytown for Gun Safety.
“I stand in solidarity with over a 1,000 current and former mayors in the effort to reduce much of the senseless gun violence that occurs not just in Jackson, but across the country on a daily basis,” Lumumba said. "We are not numb to the victims of these tragedies, rather, we will continue to effort towards common-sense gun reforms that keep high-powered assault rifles with high capacity magazines out of the hands of unstable individuals. Often, the blame for gun violence falls on those areas where crime already exists, areas where poverty and crime go hand in hand. What we should realize by having witnessed the racially-motivated mass shooting in Buffalo, New York, the slaughter of children at Sandy Hook Elementary School, and most recently in Uvalde, Texas, is that gun violence can affect any one of us at any time."
In Mississippi, there were over 800 gun deaths in 2020, with a rate of 28.6 deaths per 100,000 people, representing the highest rate of gun deaths in the U.S., according to the CDC.
"The unregulated proliferation of guns leaves no community safe whether it is the interpersonal conflicts in Jackson or the mass shootings that are either inspired by bigotry or mental health concerns,” Lumumba said. "It is past time for us to recognize and address this challenge. A society is ultimately judged by how they treat it's youth and elderly and we’ve see both affected by gun violence. We can do better."
Mayor Lumumba, along with other mayors across the country, are resolved to work together to advance the following principles:
- Collect and publish data to better understand gun violence in our communities
- Center racial equity in efforts to reduce gun violence
- Advocate for gun safety legislation at all levels of the government
- Advance policies and practices that reduce firearm suicides and unintentional shootings
- Invest in survivor services and community-based violence intervention programs
- Advance enforcement strategies that ensure public safety for residents
- Defend our democracy from armed intimidation
- Implement comprehensive tracing of guns
- Bring an end to unauthorized shootings by police and hold law enforcement accountable
- Use the courts to advance gun safety
- Use purchasing power to improve gun safety
- Invite other cities to join us in this effort
Former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and former Boston Mayor Thomas Menino founded Mayors Against Illegal Guns as a coalition of 15 mayors. Since then, they have built a bipartisan group of more than 1,000 current and former mayors from nearly every state to fight for common-sense gun laws. NYC violent crime went down under Mayor Rudy Giuliani
NYC violent crime later skyrocketed under Mayor Michael Bloomberg
Michael Bloomberg doesn’t have a single clue.
Don't know why Chucky thought this necessary. Every day in Jackson is gun violence awareness day.
I though the mayor was in Banff Canada at a “convention”.
"Bring an end to unauthorized shootings by police and hold law enforcement accountable"
Spoken by a true,lying radical.
What's he supposed to do? He is head Honcho of one of the most violent cities in Aperica, with no Dame idea how to solve his problems. He can't even deliver clean water and we expect him to solve the problem of black folks killing black folks in his city?
Mayor Zero Credibility flaps his gums again. He's resolved to "collect and publish data"? ROFLMAO Go hide behind your gate Lumumba. You're a zilch.
In more shocking news, water is wet.
Gun violence in Jackson can't be from a lack of police coverage, the local catch and release program, or 911 calls going unanswered. No sir, it has to be from the inanimate object.
What does this mean?
Center racial equity in efforts to reduce gun violence
He should share with the other mayors some of the effective measures he and his administration have enacted to quell gun violence in Jackson. Certainly those other cities could use help from the city with soul. Without our transparent government, cooperative economics, and racial equity this city would be as dangerous as ....... well, you know.
Best 9mm for Defense
I am so proud of him. Now, can he please work on getting the phones answered at the water department.
3:06:it did?
"Gun safety" is dog whistle for gun control/confiscation. You can take that to the bank.
But of course King Chowke has a 24/7 armed security detail generously provided by the sheeple of Jackistan.
How many murders in Jackson were unauthorized police violence? What about as a percentage of all murders in the last ten years. Now, see how our attention is misplaced?
Our Honorable Mayor, Hizzoner nothingness, wants "to honor those killed by gun violence".
Does he want to honor these three, reported this afternoon, killed by gun violence in his city of soul?
Wonder which ones he chooses to honor - the guy who killed the three folks, or those that stole the meth? Choices, choices.
"Man arrested after allegedly shooting 3 people in Jackson after his meth was stolen"
I find the Mayor’s attempt to appear caring a slap in the face to law abiding people as he pushed for M-Bar while knowing the crimes that were committed in the City of Jackson. He is only attempting to build his portfolio to run for ore than likely a federal position. People can see through him with his lavish trips on tax payer money and his I will do as I want as Mayor such as Richard’s Disposal! Go find another place to live off of taxpayers and leave Jackson & MS!
Bloomie spent every possible moment in Bermuda. He pretended to ride the subway, when he rode in an armored SUV past his nearby station, to grab an express ride downtown instead. Too much exposure to the common people. He allowed dozens of Russian oligarchs to buy apts in the towers now blocking out the sun in Central Park. Never went anywhere without a dozen people armed in his detail. But, sure, he's "for" the downtrodden masses here.
So, OF COURSE LuMumbler does like Uncle Bennie and panders to a rich white New Yorker filled with self loathing and hypocrisy about guns.
The New York Times will continue to lap up the tales of sorrowful suffering of the Oppressed Mayor and Masses of Jackistan as an added (and lucrative) way of getting handouts.
Rules for Thee, Not for Me. Same as it ever was.
If there was only something that was twice as deadly as gun violence, that the honorable mayors could give their attention to.
Maybe something that flares up in the news cycles from time to time.
Something, maybe, that war has already been declared on.
A killer that flows freely over our southern boarder.
A destroyer of lives, a home wrecker like no other.
There is, it's drug overdoses, but that campaign doesn't fit the agenda.
If the Democrats would ban ownership, confiscate, and hold their voter base liable you would see murder rates drop. But then again knives are used in more murders than their ghost guns and that doesn’t fit the narrative.
So unauthorized police shootings need to stop immediately. However, unauthorized shootings by them dope boys will be allowed to continue indefinitely under the Chokweed administration.
So the kiddee Mayor believes our police are going around doing unauthorized shootings? That attitude comes from the very top. So sad.
"Mayor Lumumba, along with other mayors across the country, are resolved...."
Are resolved???? Does anyone in Jackson GubMint know how to write standard English?
And "unauthorized police shootings?"
Does he authorize police to shoot folks? Is there a push on the JPD "smart" guns to his office to consult his Eminence and seek approval under his "AuthoriTay?"
This clown is a pathetic panderer and racist violator of the Constitution. Molon Labe, Antar.
Has anyone bothered to make a list of all the conferences and events this mayor has attended and how much it has cost the City of Jackson? Would love to see that list compared to the other mayors in the metro.
"Jackson is very safe.
All of our daily murders are interpersonal.
My administration remains dedicated to achieving a holistic
solution.
Right ?
I can not answer any more questions as I'm late for my flight to
Sweden for a climate-change conference with little Greta Thunberg".
Many thanks,
Edward the Second, (House of Taliaferro)
Guess it's too much to ask the democrats to stop murdering unborn babies. It matter little if a child is killed by a mad man's bullet or an abortion doctor, the effect is the same, just too much to ask for the democrats to understand all children matter.
It's amazing how Chowke deliberately talks about everything except gangs (aka dope boys). Gangs are responsible for the lion's share of "gun violence" and indiscriminate drive-by shootings where innocent people, including babies and children, get killed.
Yet Chowke won't talk about, address, or attempt to crack down on gangs.
It's almost like he's protecting them.
I wonder why...
“I stand in solidarity with over a 1,000 current and former mayors in the effort to reduce much of the senseless gun violence that occurs not just in Jackson, but across the country on a daily basis,” Lumumba said.
100 homicides per 100,000 is a lot worse than every other city in the U.S. it’s even worse than a certain border town named Tijuana. This BS about Jackson not being worse than any other city is a smoke screen to take the focus off the gangs and dope boys that run the Jackson streets.
"Racial equity?" How many white on black or black on white murders take place in Jackson?
Can Lumumba do anything without playing a race card?
If Councilmen Aaron Banks or Stokes publicized the factual evaluation of the dismal consequences of this fake mayor, such as Bond rating for Water/Sewer and long term debt, national record murder rate (one per thousand), depreciation of tax base, etc, they could expose Lil Choke's self serving marxist megaphone for what it is: oral flatulence.
Aaron Banks for Practical Mayor of Jackson!
If all the people in Jackson who are suppose to be jail for previous (and numerous) violent crimes were put in jail the homicide rate would drop 75% literally over night.
It’s not gun violence! It’s human violence! When a drunk kills someone driving they don’t call it alcohol violence.
Its incredible to be alive in a time when the actual live news stories seem too farcical to even be ridiculed as satire.
Like if a writer pitched a skit to SNL, and the premise was: the worst mayor ever in the history of Jackson MS tours other cities in the US and the Ivy Leagues to teach them how to be a safe and effective city...Lorne would squash it for being too ridiculous.
But, its real life.
Lunacy.
