Rankin County Sheriff Bryan Bailey issued the following statement.
On Monday, April 18, a deputy with the Rankin County Criminal Interdiction unit observed a silver Mercedes sedan traveling westbound on Interstate 20 at a high rate of speed. The deputy pulled in behind the individual and confirmed he was driving well over the posted speed limit. The deputy activated his blue lights and the individual began to pull off the road. Just before the suspect came to a stop, he pulled back into traffic and quickly accelerated to speeds in excess of 100 mph. Officers from Pearl Police Department were able to spike the suspect and he was finally brought to a stop on Interstate 20 near the outlet malls in Pearl. The suspect was identified as JOSE A ZERMENO from Dallas, Texas. ZERMENO was transported to the Rankin County Jail where he is being charged with felony fleeing. District Attorney Bubba Bramlett will bring ZERMENO in front of Rankin County Court Judge David Morrow for an initial appearance. Sheriff Bryan Bailey would like to thank the Pearl Police Department, Brandon Police Department and the Mississippi Highway Patrol for their assistance in bringing this incident to a safe conclusion.

When are people going to learn, "DON'T MESS WITH RANKIN COUNTY SHERIFFS DEPUTIES"!!!!!!!!!!
this westbound mercedes was payment for a previous eastbound drug shipment.
this defendant was simply delivering the payment.
law enforcement can't do a forfeiture of the vehicle on a felony fleeing.
A ploy to let the other drug runners get a safe passage.
It's called running interference. "...Watch ole Bandit run".
Since the other commenters seem to have some additional information, can you provide specifics on the drug shipment?
yep while Lil’Bit and his Keystone Kops were chasing this decoy, a half dozen mules and human traffickers sneaked past his license plate scanning SUVs.
"A ploy to let the other drug runners get a safe passage.
Oh Gawd yes 5:31 !
These guys are better at running a fake option play than Grant and Sherman on the way to Vicksburg.
Mexican person speeding in Rankin county with Texas plates. What are the chances he will not be stopped?
Where in here does it say anything about drugs?
Posters here aren’t assuming based on race, are they? How unpredictable would that be!
@6:03
I am certain that the Sinaloa cartel saw Smokey and the Bandit and know exactly how to dupe hillbillies.
I don't see the time of day indicated, but that seems like a busy/dangerous stretch of road to deploy spike strips.
@7:40- Shhhh. The grownups are talking.

Let me tell you about the birds & the bees.
The spike strip is thrown out in front of the vehicle they intent to stop. After said vehicle runs over it & get several hollow type nail in their tires the office pull the spike strip off the road with the attached rope.
Now, the taxpayers of the poorest state in the union will have to house JOSE for several years in jail. This is because the Feds have no control over the borders along Mexico.Entiendes ahora mi amigo
Don’t believe this happened at 8 pm since it was posted about 5 pm or shortly after when I read it. Great job PPD & all LEO’s!
@5:31 PM
You watch too much TV.
@7:43 PM
Burt Reynolds never ran drugs across state borders. Stop allowing the TV to program your dome.
interesting string, I do agree, he ran for some reason, fleeing really makes u appear guilty. Confident more this. Prospering, I never had nor will have a Mercedes, wonder what model.
Kind of racist to assume he is an illegal alien, isn't it?
@7:07
Nobody said Burt Reynolds, or Jose Z ran drugs. What manner of mental gymnastics made you come to that conclusion? This arrest says absolutely NOTHING about drugs. It said he was SPEEDING and EVADING. Exactly what the Bandit did in the movie! The comments merely suspect him of running interference. You really need to get your skull checked. Maybe lay off the crown and coke.
@Kingfish
I would struggle to distinguish you from the ethnic ruling class of Mexicans. I know Spain had all sorts of names for swarthy mystery meat like yourself.
7:40: If the shoe fits and frankly this is a classic interference for drug running situation. Of course this legal citizen could just be stupid. Connecting the dots on this one is childs play and I highly doubt he's legal.
7:38 : No. Prejudice perhaps.
If memory serves me, Ole Burt was running Coors Beer which was, at that time, not seen east of the Mississippi.
@9:26
Your memory is dead wrong. Burt was running Forrest Gump’s mama and nothing more. He couldn’t fit much more than her and his machismo in that Trans-Am.
Dang KF/7:38... you're racist if you breath air - haven't you heard?
Just a typical Texas interstate driver. Interstate speed limit in Texas is 75. Left lane drivers are usually 85+. His mistake was fleeing
"Junior...when I get home I'm gonna slap yo momma right in the mouf"
Hahahaha wow 7:45 swarthy comments
