Hinds County Sheriff Tyree Jones issued the following statement.
On Thursday night, April 14th at approx. 8:30 PM, a transportation deputy securing the perimeter of the Raymond Detention Center observed a gray Dodge Challenger occupied by a black male driver approach the fence line of the facility. The deputy noticed the vehicle matched the description of a vehicle recently involved in attempting to smuggle contraband onto the grounds of the facility. The deputy approached the vehicle and observed the driver get out and throw items (packs) wrapped in different materials over the fence. The driver noticed the deputy and fled the scene with the transportation deputy following him and notifying patrol deputies. Upon patrol’s response, they located the vehicle in a rural area of Hinds County and the driver continued to flee. After a short chase, the driver exited the vehicle running on foot and patrol deputies were able to take him into custody. He’s identified as JACOB DARNELL LEWIS, 25, of Madison, MS.
Investigators were able to retrieve the items thrown over the fence and after searching the vehicle, discovered more items that were due to be introduced to the facility as well. Deputies also recovered items along the roadway where Lewis fled that he threw from the windows while refusing to stop.
The several items recovered during this incident included, alcoholic beverages, marijuana, tobacco, cigarettes, knives, a saw, cell phones, cell phone chargers, cigars, pills, a semi-automatic rifle and other miscellaneous items.
Lewis faces several felony charges: felony fleeing, possession of a controlled substance, introducing contraband to a correctional facility and more charges are possible.
The deputies responsible for responding to this incident and the keen observation of the transportation deputy should be commended for their swift actions and resilient response to apprehend this offender and deter these dangerous items from entering the facility.
Kingfish note: Sure am tired of Madison crime coming to Hinds County.

At least he's working for his money and not just stealing someone else's stuff.
I'm tired of Hinds County thugs fleeing to Madison County.
Double banana mags - ready to "spray and pray." Saw? No cake to go with it? He is now a Hinds Co. resident, where he belongs.
Somebody didnt get the payoff before the drop was attempted. No address other than the city mentioned is odd. The young man was set up or over served at the time the incident occurred. Publicity event, nothing else, lets keep up with the case as it goes through the “system”.
Blessings in 5, 4, 3, 2, 1... So he can spend Easter with his family, right?
that's not a semi-auto rifle. it doesn't have a stock. it's a semi auto pistol
Correctional Deputies are searched/checked before entering the facility to work. While going outside to search the perimeter and smoke they get the contraband and bring it back into the facility.
Check the phone records of the arrestee and the Deputies on duty that night!
Or just ask the arrestee what Deputy he was bringing the contraband too.
Signed,
A former honest Hinds County Correctional Deputy.
This shit ain’t rocket science!!!
Madison, or Madison county? Stupid hinds county government can’t/won’t even specify.
@12:16 PM - Thanks for sharing. Now let's see if this is followed up.
Sheriff, are the inmates allowed to go outside? If not, how is the contraband going to walk into the jail! When I worked there we did perimeter searches day and night! And, I think the trustees just can’t roam alone! We had adult employee supervision at all times!
So it has to be an employee connection!!!
Sheriff, you just can’t hire employee’s to do simple shit, like opening their eyes! I’m sure you have some great employees, but them bad apples ruin the whole lot.
Don’t let me start on the supervisors wearing those bars and stripes, do your damn jobs!
A new facility won't fix this.
To the corrections officers: Thanks for the insight and comments.
That transportation official could have been a wealthy man by now if he had chosen an alternate response.
Does he live in Reunion?
@1:14 PM
So you actually believe Sheriff Jones reads this blog? Lolololol.
1:14, bars and stripes? Please do tell.
"There must be a con like me in every prison in America. I'm the guy who can get if for you; cigarettes, a bag of reefer, if that's your thing, a bottle of brandy to celebrate your kid's high school graduation, damn near anything within reason. Yes sir, I'm a regular Sears and Roebuck."
Can someone identify the substance contained in the foil appearing package imprinted with the individual with the green alien head who appears to be space-skateboarding or lunar-surfing on a field of burning mushrooms? Want to make sure I confiscate that from my children.
I’m sure the Sheriff is doing what he can to do a great job and I wish him well! The white shirts that supervise the Correctional Deputies must do a better job, training and supervising the lower ranks.
I ain’t hating on the Sheriff, but the ultimate buck stops with him!
The inmates are not bringing that contraband into the facility, it’s the Personnel that work at that facility.
You just have to find the weakest link!
There’s a cat on the line somewhere in that jail!
Yep..There's at least three employees involved:
The night guard in the tower who knows things are coming over the wall.
The guard who goes into the yard to retrieve and distribute the flying objects.
The employee with access to camera/recorded footage and erases it.
Drones. That'd be the way to do this stuff.
It would have been easier for this young fool to distance himself from who he was trying to help in the Hinds County Jail! Now he is going to have to snitch on a lot of people that are involved!
Just tell the Feds the whole story and cut a deal. I know the county has jurisdiction, however trust, me be an issue!
What a web we have spun! I should have listened to mama!
Just let me know the facility you are going to be incarcerated and I’ll send you some advice in the mail. Advice not contraband.
Advice, get a job-career, get married and start a family. I think then you may not get involved in dumb shit! Just think of all the people in the surroundings area, you the only fool stupid enough to do this dumb shit!
In the 2019 census there was over 500,000 people in the 7 county area within 50 miles of Hinds County. This young man out of 500,000 people had the courage enough to drive to a jail in Hinds County and throw contraband into the grounds of a Correctional Facility.
Yes, he had nothing else better to do that particular night!
Now he has time to think about that night for years to come.
On Awards night, this young man needs to be mentioned! His mama and Daddy should be allowed to come to the Jail and slap the shit out of him!
And give him an Award for the dumbest son of the year!

Madison you say ? Well well well. Lol.
