That was one of the larger issues - that WM owns the landfill and transfer facility. Kind of puts Richards at a disadvantage. That’s why they do “lowest and best bid” as Richards has no local facilities. I’m sure WM will just lay down and let Richards have whatever they want. Ha.

WM closed the transfer site "early" on Saturday. That's why garbage in my neighborhood wasn't picked up yesterday (Monday). Got it.

If Waste Management owns and operates the dump, what obligation do they have to keep it open for their competitors to use? What's to keep them from increasing their rates? Or just closing shop entirely? Are these things regulated like utilities? I honestly have no idea....

I wonder if the contract that WM has stipulates that only "contracted vendors for the City of Jackson" may use the transfer facility? If so, does that mean that they can deny access to Richard's Disposal since they do not have a contract?

Waste Management has a contract with Jackson to accept its garbage at the WM landfill. I think we can assume that the contract has a clause that allows whoever collects garbage for Jackson to take it to the landfill.

All I assume when dealing with Jackson, especially if it came through PW or Legal, which in this case it did both, is that they will be f**ked up.

Do like NOLA did (NOLA is home to Richard's who was one of 3 contractors). Hold a First Amendment Protected "Trash Parade" by City Hall and dump it there. In LuMumbler's parking place might be a good spot.

They started dumping it at City Hall and things got sorta fixed rapidly. Still sorting out contractors, too, including Richard's.

But who is "collecting" the garbage on behalf of the city? No formal contract exists, so it's no different than a private citizen arriving with a dump truck load of $h1t!

How much does the city pay Waste Management to use THEIR facility? Obviously they have no such agreement with Richard's Disposal. Is that cost part of the Waste Management contract? If so, shouldn't that cost be considered when discussing the relative costs associated with these two opposing companies?

I saw a picture of those pretty new garbage trucks. Who in their right mind would advance money to that new trash hauler without a contract? Maybe, the mayor of Jackson had the city guarantee the truck contract?

Im just regurgitating this from last week, but any garbage dump, once opened, is probably a money maker. WM picking up the residential trash is just one part of their business.

RD picked up all my trash (lots of bags) and boxes. WM has been picking up a couple bags each visit.. so I am thankful for RD. Almost like WM did it on purpose to make too much trash for RD to pickup when they started....

When WM had the contract, sure it was in their interest to keep the dump open a little longer as holder of both contracts. Now? Why pay OT or increase the risk of staying open later for a vendor whose contract is shady, and probably hasn't hammered out details with WM on dump use and times.

And maybe after that last truck at 3:26 pm, the guy working had to leave early? Have some empathy for the working man!

The driver manages to navigate the truck to the summit. He parks it, pulls a lever & the garbage begins to unload, causing the mountain to quiver under the new extra weight. The driver cracks a beer & watches.
The truck finishes unloading & the driver tosses his empty can on top, but the dusty wind knocks it back down. The driver tries again. And again. Frustrated, he finally takes the can & plants it forcefully on top, causing the small peak to collapse, which causes the next part below to collapse & a chain reaction on down the mountain. It was One beer can more than this mountain was designed to hold.

so if Richards was collecting garbage on Saturday and only unloaded 11 trucks during the normal operating hours of WM transfer station, what did Richards do with the rest of the garbage.

I guess they did exactly what the Mayor tried to assure the Council wouldn't be an issue; they took their loaded trucks - you know, them stanky trucks that Kenneth complained about - back to Hawkins Field.

As Stokes said, environmental racism allowing this operation within the neighborhood. Mayor assured that there would be no garbage at the airport - so lets see what they did with their loaded trucks. Didn't see them driving back around the routes unloading it back at resident's houses so one has to assume that it spent the night Saturday and all day Sunday at Hawkins Field.

Bet that violated their approval from FAA as well.

I find it odd that when they moved trucks to Jackson they started having issues in NOLA. Folks are complaining trucks aren't coming by and they reduced pickup to 1 day a week. I bet they don't have enough trucks. Likely the reason they are behind in Jackson as well.

The mayor is committing political suicide. There are less than 5 things everyone in Jackson agrees on. Reliable garbage collection is in the top 2 with water.

I wonder if any of the other 49 states capitol cities have the plethora of problems that the leadership of Jackson has created.

On Dec. 16, on day 16 of the strike, Channel 7 Eyewitness News reporter Tracy Egan made her way around the piles of garbage all over Manhattan & residents told her they were fed up.

"We certainly can't stand the trash around & people have to find a place to walk in the street," a woman told Eyewitness News. "This thing is taking up entirely too much room."

Fortunately for everyone involved, the strike was SETTLED the Very NEXT day. The resolution of the impasse was presented as an Early Christmas Gift to the City.
