A Hinds County grand jury returned an additional 46-count indictment against Nancy New and her son, Zachary. There is no record of a new indictment against the News. However, Hinds County Circuit Judge Faye Peterson stated in her order of continuance issued yesterday:
THIS CAUSE comes before the Court sua sponte following pre-trial motions heard on January18, 2022 in preparation for trial set February 7, 2022 (first setting). The Court, having reviewed the pleadings and other papers and having recently arraigned Defendant in Hinds County Cause Number 22-002, a new, forty-six (46) count indictment whose charges include those in the above-styled cause, finds that a continuance is necessary in the interest of justice.
IT IS THEREFORE ORDERED that the trial date in this matter be continued. The parties shall review their calendars to find a special setting for trial in the matter in August 2022 or October 2022.A Hinds County grand jury indicted Nancy and Zach New in March 2020 for embezzlement, conspiracy, and making fraudulent statements. The indictment charges they illegally funneled millions of dollars in government funds through a non-profit company to New Summit School.

Help me understand this. The trial was set to begin February 7 and is now going to be August or October?
These multiple-count indictments are always reduced down to one or two at trial so what's the damned point in delaying justice?
Both of them will get ten with five to serve, probation and a fine for her whether the gavel falls in February, August or October. I could wait five years to spend ten-twenty million.
"Help me understand this. The trial was set to begin February 7 and is now going to be August or October?"
Your reading skills are good. With the new indictment, the system suggests a continuance is in order to give the law-dogs sufficient time to review and prepare.
Owens wasn't ready so he scammed the process to buy himself more time to actually prepare for trial.
So giving the News a chance to call in political favors and ask for a Hinds County Blessing?
So this is being drug out because new info has come to light. New players ? Big Dogs ?
Feel Bryant needs time get the political help lined up, he should have it in place by midsummer.
If you think Jodie Owens is personally going anywhere near this trial, you’re crazy. He’s got his top ADA on this one. Jodie’s not going to let his career get tanked by this ordeal.
Was it news to them?
8:42 :bingo
I need the Legal Eagles on here to help me understand something. If the News are charged with embezzling/misappropriating State Funds why are they being prosecuted through Hinds County which unfortunately is certain to screw the case up? Isn't there another court to do this? Another set of judges? Somebody besides the Hinds Group? I'm just confused as to why charges start with the Auditors's office and end up in the County DA's office for prosecution so could you guys explain it to me? Thanks!
9:51 :not a lawyer but it may be something as simple as big fish are involved along with little fish in the DA's office. This is a way to keep all involved secret while the News are scapegoated and given suspended sentences.
9:51, because the seat of government of the state of Mississippi is located in Hinds County.
Something's fishy here. They indicted them on 19 counts 2 years ago. I believe at the time prosecutors said it was enough to put them away for 60 + years. Why didn't they go ahead and do it ???? What a waste of taxpayers' money !!!!!
@10:43 Shad and by extension the DA never expected a defense to be mounted and they damn sure didn’t expect a fight. Throw a bunch of nonsensical BS at Nancy, include her kid as a pressure point, she pleas to save him and it goes away without the other side of the story being told, and other big fish being exposed.
Fast forward two years, still no indication of any potential plea, the State realizes its 3 weeks away from a trial and its pucker factor has got to be exponentially higher than it was 2 years ago, so file new charges which I’m betting are nothing more than fraud and conspiracy charges associated with the original indictment.
So now the State case is behind the Fed case, and the DA is surely hoping the State case never happens.
Owens wasn't ready so he scammed the process to buy himself more time to actually prepare for trial.
Alternate take: co-defendant Anne McGrew recently copped a plea. Maybe there’s new information?
How is Pheel and phrends pheeling about all this new indictment and defendants posturing like they [plan on actually going to trial signaling stuff? (asking for a friend!)
The needs of the many outweigh..............
The News are already ruined financially, personally, and every other way imaginable. Judge denied another continuance asked for by DA, hence the prosecutor's idea to file more indictments, which would force a continuance. Seems to any fair-minded person that it's not just about the News. Somebody's hoping if they press them long enough, they'll take the rap for them. And that somebody must have a lot of political power.
$96 million allegedly misused or stolen and these two people are the face of this “scandal”. There’s more to this. Too many politics and politicians involved over the years. And that Christi Webb lady and her group in Tupelo apparently received just as much money, yet appear free and clear. Phil Bryant and others touted the programs. John Davis is no where to be seen or heard. And we’re supposed to believe the News are these criminal master minds akin to the mafia. I’m calling BS.
This all started to unravel the day Shad White started trying to convince us all that Phil Bryant was the whistleblower.
12:34 pm
No they are not ruined every way imaginable.
Let their thieving asses rot in jail for 20 years.
Then come back here and smack talk.
I'm starting to wonder if Pheel is an unindicted because he did blow the whistle!
@2:46 Pheel’s already been caught in a lie about that concussion drug, meetings with the company folks, etc. He’s not the whistleblower. He’s covering his ass. Still shocked he’s not indicted on all the port BS.
For people not convicted of a crime (other than in the court of public opinion), I’m sure life more/less sucks for them. Most want them burned at the stake not really even knowing the actual facts about what has really gone on. They’ll get their day in court one day (presumably). It’ll be interesting to see what all comes out then. I doubt they’re sitting but losing everything they’ve got just waiting to plea or go quietly into the night.
Since Feel has attorneys hired, he must be feeling the HEAT!
There are eldely people in supermarkets buying candy bars with the $18 a month they receive in food stamps. They should be the target not this witch hunt of good people like the Newss.
Dang I can't believe this just dawned on me. Phil Bryant is being characterized as the whistleblower so he can get legal protection. That guy is guilty as sin in this. He appointed Shad to Auditor and Shad protected him by sending the major league case to the minors (looking at you Jody). This should be a federal trial since it is federal money.
9:51 - Shad did not trust Mike Hurst so he gave the case to Owens. Good move.
Anonymous - Shad did not trust Mike Hurst so he gave the case to Owens. Good move.
I hope that's sarcasm. Jody has never been in the shallow end of the pool, much less the deep end - and this is a deep-end case.
As for Feel, he's an avid outdoorsman, quail hunter (clip-wing), has a Warren County land mass named for him, is a prior law enforcement officer, has a family member who's an attorney, wanted the third landfill in MadCo (run by his good friend) in the best interest of the citizens, wore boots in a buckboard at the Coliseum and appointed Cindy, who rode with him, to a coveted federal position. If you can't trust somebody with that resume, who you gonna trust?
So, is this new news or old news….
@9:45PM- you could ask Pheel if this is new News news or old News news.
Word on the street (aka MSM) says that some RICO charges have just come down the pipe. Can we please stop with the "if they were guilty, they would have been in court already" keyboard warrior comments. They are going. This was not a 7-11 robbery.. It doesn't happen in a day, a week, a month, or even a year... and that was pre COVID. So hold on people.. here we go!
The fact that that State has come back with additional charges 2 years later tells you all you need to know. They're worried about proving their case and are trying to stack the deck and force a plea. It's pressure tactics 101. This isn't a case of it takes time to build case. Shad White has professed absolute guilt and no doubt criminal acts from Day 1. His political career is on the line and he's upping the ante. He's calling the shots here, not the DA. They never expected, nor do they want to try this case.
