Last year, he was running around promoting the Legislatures version, "so we can make tweaks, as necessary." This was just after stating how hard it is to pass a law.

Little birdie tells me that the group that helped write the MS Ballot verbiage is the same group that helped Arkansas write theirs and buy them a few more years. You know it seems to me that supporting a special session is a long way from calling the gov and asking for a session. Although if the session is called I believe anything can be brought up. But the big question is, would the governor even call for one. Could be nothing more than a political move by Gunn in support of his aspirations to be the top dog sitting in tater tots chair. If by some miracle the session is called it would be political suicide to end the session without a medical marijuana law passed.

Unless the rules have changed in the last 8 years, since I read them, a special session can only address the issues called not expand to other matters. I may be wrong. I am not current on their rules and they may have changed. I don’t think they have but again I don’t know current rules.

Which flag is the “1918” flag you mention? There are so many, I must get confused easily...

The argument is the 5 house districts that are now 4 and how the ballot signatures are collected out of the district. If this doesn’t get corrected anything going forward that is a referendum on the ballot can get thrown out. This just clarifies the districts and how items can be placed on ballots.

Trey Lamar is horrible, horrible, horrible. He did everything he could to try to kill the initiative and failed. Unless...he has some balls and tries to pass a medical MJ bill now.

I have friends who have children with severe seizure disorders. They would like to try this as perhaps their children will get some relief. They were on the front lines trying to get the initiative passed.

Unfortunately, my youngest of 3 has also recently started some medication herself for seizures.

It’s a real issue and these asshats need to stop politicking and start helping.

Instead of whining about Mary Hawkins, why not just follow the law to get medical pot legal?

Well @8:01 that would be great if the legislature worked that fast. In reality though someone would present the medical marijuana bill sometime in January. It would get kicked around back and forth probably until the first week in April. Then the program would begin with licensing for growers sometime in August depending on who handles the regulations. Then cards would be issued sometime in late 2022 or early 2023. Then maybe in the middle of 2023 dispensaries could start selling. And that would be fast for this legislature.

MS is going to hell in a handbasket and all you whiners worry about is medical dope. Drive to most of the towns/cities in MS that have crappy schools and ask yourselves why we're losing population.

The Speaker is off on the wrong tangent again, but why should we be surprised. This is all about him trying to get out in front of the parade and look like he is leading. Which we all know he is not.

Supporting a Special Session to deal with fixing the I&R amendment is foolish. It will take a constitutional amendment to fix the mess the legislature created - and doubled down on not once, not twice, but seven times with their failure to fix the mess over the past two decades. Even as late as the last session - which just concluded less than two months ago the Speaker failed to have the members of his body address the issue and fix it then.

Now, a special session would cost extra money, and for what? It would put an amendment to the constitution to 'fix' the I&R provision and the people would have to vote on that amendment at the next general election, which would be in November 2022. Unless the legislature in its infinite wisdom called for an election to be held this November for no other purpose than to vote on this change (at an expense to the counties of tens and sometimes hundreds of thousands of dollars).

So yes, Speaker, stand there and wave the baton like you are leading something - probably because you are tired of playing second fiddle to the Lt Governor who has always held that position, even when he was SOS.

If the Governor calls a special session it should be for the legislature to address developing a good and proper medical marijuana bill for passage. Not the crap that the House put forth, copying fellow member Joel Bomgar's language from I65, but a bill designed to address the needs of those that are suffering from real pain - not to address those that were already counting their profits from the new industry coming to a street corner near you.

So Speaker, if you want to do something, start playing nice in the sandbox with the other two leaders of the state --- you know, the Lt. Governor down the hall and the Governor across the street in that top floor office. Work with them and do what you were sent there to do --- develop some good conservative legislation among yourselves. Look to the Louisiana statute, along with the information developed by the Dept of Health in preparing to administer the mess written into I65, and prepare a proposed legislation that ALL THREE of you can agree on ahead of time. Then the Governor can call a special session to address that single issue. Yall can take care of fixing the I&R during the regular session next January.

Marijuana arrests are BIG business in Mississippi....how so? That weed is responsible for probably half of the incarcerations in the state...connect the dots to how many jobs that supports through state and federal dollars. Lawyers, judges, LEOs, bailiffs, court reporters, administrative, support, and of course, the DOC that needs a certain number of bodies to justify all of THOSE funded positions. Private, or public - facilitating "justice" churns hundreds of millions if not billions. The bookends of "business" in Mississippi are education, which is complete illusion - and incarceration, which everyone knows is done about the same way as in medieval times....because the educational system is the pipeline that feeds it.

Legalizing weed would also affect how many people need prescription meds for things, which would impact healthcare services billed for, but don't know to what degree. Point being: MANY more would use weed just to feel better than prescription crap.

Well @2:31 if that’s the case then the congressman I talked to yesterday lied his ass off to me( which wouldn’t be a surprise). He told me that it would likely be January before a medical marijuana bill could be proposed unless a special session for something else came up. He informed me that there may be a special session for the 1.8 trillion dollar stimulus bill on infrastructure. And if that happened MM could be brought up. I’m starting to think this may be a bait and switch by Gunn. Bring up the initiative process, kick it around for a few months and dismiss the legislature when they can’t come to a consensus.

Madison folks, remember how much money Mary Hawkins Butler is costing this state next time you are at the ballot box. I also highly doubt she thought of and came up with that all on her own. I would love to know who was in her ear about the 4 vs 5 districts.

Also, mark my word, Gunn & CO realized how pissed off the people of MS were about it. He and his crew are using this to pretend to save face but what is really going to happen is they are going pass something that will water it down and make it harder to pass as intended, rather that really taking a look at the issue of Med MJ. I can assure you they aren't going to do it "for the people". They realized the momentum behind and it are going to try and head that off before it gets rolling(no pun intended).

If Gunn & co were aware of that flaw, they would've used it to stop 42. They weren't going to save that silver bullet for a non-existent initiative.

Speaker Gunn is only calling for a special session so he can blame Governor Reeves for this debacle. If Gunn were truly interested in listening to the will of the people he would have a) passed a medical marijuana bill out of the House and b) passed a bill to correct the number of congressional districts. The latter could have been fixed anytime in the last decade or so, but what legislator wants to give up his/her power and let the people decide on an issue? Plus, why waste money on a special session when the earliest the I&R issue, which will require a public vote to amend the state constitution, can appear on a ballot is November 2022? Gunn, if you want to fix this, you can do so during the regular 2022 legislative session. @9:48 is right, the only person who makes Gunn look smart is Andy Gibson.

This legislature and the Governor are all paying lip service to the issue of medical marijuana. They have acted on this issue just as we would expect, as brainwashed robots who take out their hatred on marijuana due to years of demonizing it and it's users, without basis. It certainly has risks. Everything does in a free society including my AR-15 which I hold as deep reminder of what a free society means to me.

Ever since Nixon demonized cannabis and conditioned so many to hate it, everyone has been prevented from even learning about it. Think about how stupid that is...we knew as a society that is is consumed widely more than many products but we did not want to learn about it. Finally, due to sound scientific efforts (certainly outside this state), their bigotry on this issue is being challenged. They can not make sense of it. They hoped that years would prove it causes people to kill each other and has no good aspects when the reverse is true.

As such, potential harms and certainly potential benefits were never considered at all. Pharma companies are now trying to harness its benefits but the cat is out of the bag and they realize they don't need to be involved. That threatens our paid politicians and the pharma companies. Think about how dangerous opiates are and how many people can't stay on them. They are one of the only and main pain management regimens legally avaiable and they are devastating in a way that marijuana is not.

Marijuana arrests do now fund the police but with sensible regulations, some proceeds of marijuana can actually go to the police so they can focus on real crimes. We need good, strong police and they should be commended even for the years they were forced to enforce an unjust devastating law. I am sure it was so hard for many police. We need great law enforcement so lets commend the police and allow them to do an even better job.

Our elected officials will always follow the party line on marijuana because they think they know better. There is no way they would even recognize whether someone has consumed marijuana becasue they are conditioned to think they would be an obnoxious member of society instead of someone who can be polite and comfortable to speak and interact with.

Representative Jill Ford even said she does not believe anyone read the initiative. She has presupposed that we need babied on this issue and our opinion can't be as it really is. They will stop and nothing to intrude on liberty when it suits them. They want government out of lives unless they mandate governmental intrustion due to demonization of marijuana. It is not without danger but that goes with so many things in a free society.

They will try every tactic to fight this issue because it is in their DNA not to know about it, not to care about it, and not to care about the people who have spent time in jail for something far more benign than alcohol. Hatred of it keeps them going because that is what they have been taught by all.

Finally, this state will usually not show an ounce of progress where it has a deep-seeded pathological connection to the old ways. The old ways are often very good and that makes this a great place to live also. It is tough for them to do what is even in their best business interest when doing so challenges what they think they know, when they do not. Think about how long it took to change the flag long after it stigmatized us in the minds of many would not even do business here because of it. They say they care about business here but can't see a good opportunity if it hit them in the face.

This is all trash they absolutely have no intention of any kind of special session. This was all planned from the start. By all of them. They are all in it together whether it be republican or democrat. They all rape this state. And have been for decades. Every single politician in Mississippi must be voted out. No more incumbents. Not on any level. City, county, state, even the representatives. And 100 percent the governor and I voted for him. He is literally the worst governor in the United States. He sat by idly while they threw out the constitutional amendment process in this state.


During the Supreme court the chief justice Micheal K Randolph. A clear enemy of Mississippi and its people, literally states that the people of Mississippi are so stupid and can not read, and to think that we read 65 is beyond possibility. Why is such arrogant person who literally hates the people of Mississippi sitting in any kind of capacity to serve. He is not there to serve, but lord over the peasants of this state.

Then we have the governor tweeting we support Israel. Not saying that is good or bad but we have bigger fish to fry than commenting on international politics. No one cares what Mississippi has to say, because we are a laughing stock. We are the only state who overturned the will of the people and did so with such ferocity that the people will never be able to even speak again. These people are utter morons. They rape our state, and sell it to the highest bidder. They think we are idiots. But they are failing to realize that they have shown every Mississippian there true colors now.

For example, we have the second most casinos behind Nevada. You know why? because outside interest own those casinos. And they enrich the politicians and political ruling elite of Misssissippi. Casinos suck money from the state. Look at the Continental tire plant, hell they dont even ever have to pay a cent of tax. What kind of deal is that? I am sure who did get paid are the politicians. And you bet your bottom dollar where the plant is being built is owned by them and there freinds. I have to pay taxes why should a tire plant not have to? I literally have to pay personal property taxes even on this computer as it is at my business. And there are many more examples. And the one thing (65) that would have brought young people and money into this state, enriched the common man. they fought tooth and nail to get rid of until they finally did. Bravo ruling elite, what a grand job you did. God forbid people acutally come here start families and businesses. O yea silly, me they would never allow that as that would possibly change the power structure of corruption in Mississppi.

This is not a red state, this is a sold state. A state sold to the highest bidder. Almost every state has a way for people to put things on the ballet besides MS. Even California can recall a governor and put things on the ballet. And we over here want to act like we are some sort of republican meca. There is no we the people here. They might as well cancel elections as well. As they serve absolutely no purpose.

Hey 8:45 - I appreciate your admission to using pot back in the day. That is bold. It is time people stop the facade. I also appreciate you lightening up the mood a little. I hope that you found that you did not die from the pot you smoked, that you were never compelled to strike your wife or neighbor, that you never passed out and got horribly sick, and that you never lost a liver from it. I can bet that you may have settled into a night of ice cream and tv perhaps with a loved one. You likely laughed and bonded. If you were very sick at the time, you likely found that you could relate to your pain better, process it, and live with it.

I do disagree with your point on what the Supreme Court decision was about. Judges can interpret laws that have vague potential applications or are written badly. They can do so in so many ways including interpreting the actions of those attempting to comply with the law as sufficient when considering ambiguities that make compliance impossible. They had the option to do that and did not. This was no surprise that it happened in a courtroom.

These judges come at this issue with an ideological view that reacts to the issue of marijuana with disdain as they are conditioned to. Sure, they kept the written decision to the constitutional issue but even Mayor Mary made no bones about it when bringing the case. This was about her view of what should be in Madison and what should not. She wanted to quash medical marijuana for the entire state. Our politicians still arrogantly disbelieve we could ever have known what we voted for. The truth is people know exactly what they voted for. While many would not subject themselves to the stigma of supporting pot outside the ballot box, they know what they think in private and they know what they voted for. They have known friends, family and so many others that use it or have used it.

The justices went against the will of the people when they could have certainly sided with the people. Remember Judge Griffiths' television ad when he was running for office last year? It was political to the hilt and he made no bones about his politics. Funny for a Judge huh? No one blinked an eye about his bias then. Look what we got.

Look, Madison is a great place and Mayor Mary has done great things. But she has overstepped on this by trying to eliminate marijuana at the expense of the sick and dying.

Let's proposed this:

Mayor Mary can have her zoning restrictions. I personally love the Madison zoning restrictions. In fact, for the entire state, there shall be no gross neon signs outside dispensaries. The dispensaries can not be in strip malls because they are not selling toys or lawn products, they are selling something much more complex. They shall not look like junk. If they want respect they need to act in the interest of a respectful society.

Let's make sure that those who want to grow it, know what they are doing. People should learn from those who know out of state. While it may seem elitist, no one should just throw a seed in the ground and claim they can grow it. That will only prove the elitists right when the so-called marijuana cultivators mess up the medicine and grow something horrible and weak. Can you imagine a free for all pot grow that produces the least effective medicine??? There is no right to make medicine for others. It has to be a privilege. Of course, anyone should be able to learn about it but they have to show they know what to do. We should seek the assistance of corporations that know this industry. Growing has to be a privilege, not a right. That is the only way. This is not about spreading something destructive. Those who support this need to understand they have to act in the interest of all...the old, new, conservative, liberal, all and they have to comply with reasonable rules. It is about making and using something for good. If this issue is approached with respect, we will see so much about it that is hard to see. Medical cannabis will help so many.

The whole thing was done in a specific manner. Do you all not see this? They want the only 12 places to grow that they all own through relatives etc, or own the land and collect money. They are corrupt. And they work together. How can one take something to supreme court in such a fashion? Would I or anyone else in Mississippi be able to ? We must call for the immediate resignation Tate Reeves and Dilbert and or have these people investigated along with the judges. Representative Jill Ford claims she will write a marijuana bill in the next session. She claims no one ever knew what they voted for. Her intentions are good, but she remains without a beacon in the dark. The truth is, the marijuana witch hunt that has been perpetuated upon society for decades requires that no one in their right mind who has any standing in society, would ever publicly sign their name to supporting marijuana law reform. It is no surprise and so many would never publicly say they want others to have broad rights when it comes to cannabis.

Our elected officials want to legislate something they seem to know nothing about even as they work to find a solution to a forgotten state. They should be required to go to another state where it is legal to learn about this plant without claiming they know from what they have been indoctrinated to believe.

I fear that our current politicians in charge of this policy may never grasp how it works for the sick and dying. They tirelessly struggle to find direction for our state but have sorely missed the mark. Cannabis works because it is powerful and concentrated. Not only does it work with physical aspects of pain like an opiate, but it also works because it allows someone to perceive pain, not as a part of themselves, but as something they can detach from and relate to. Pain is no longer all-consuming for those who use this medicine. They can see their physical pain as one thing, and a larger connection to other things as well. Seeing pain from a new perspective and having physical relief make a profound connection for those who use it. Those who face death can make peace with it, knowing they are not their pain.

These things are subtle. Those stuck in their own preconceptions due to years of marijuana propaganda from all angles, will never understand how this medicine works for so many, because to do so challenges what they know in every way. They seem to have an aversion to knowing more because it shakes their belief structure. That they cannot find peace with how this new reality shakes their sea of ignorance.

There will come a time when all the potential benefits of this plant will be embraced. There will be rules regarding responsible use, driving under the influence, and all other aspects of this. We will need law enforcement more than ever so they can make sure this is regulated, and so they are well taken care of with cannabis tax money to fight crime. We will need to make sure that those who chose to use are doing so within parameters.

We will not see it as a haunting, unknown demon, but instead, a tool from God that must be respected that can be used to ease the suffering in the minds and bodies of many. Those who abuse it and do not stay within appropriate limits should be subject to penalties.

I fear these concepts are far beyond the grasp of our current elected officials but I know they are good, and they will see. They desperately try to heal this forgotten state. They wait for the proof to come down that this plant is blatantly evil when it is not. They have waited so long and their hopes have proven futile. It can be used negatively through human free will, but such are all things that God brought into the garden.

Someday, we will look back on this and wonder why it took so long to learn how those who suffer may experience profound relief. With cannabis, we will see how those who face death are no longer consumed by their own end. We will see how we cast out this plant when it had the power to heal and benefit so many while also seeing where people may go wrong with it. Every day counts as so many suffer under the grip of opiates. Our legislatures need to take heed.

Finally, this issue is a matter of freedom. This is one of the greatest issues of civil liberty we have ever faced. People are cast out of society, ripped from their families, and forced to endure devastating losses due to years of hatred during which the truth was ignored (and never even sought), all in name of righteousness.
