Mississippi's Senators issued the following statements.
Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith
“First,
the impeachment of a former President is not part of the Constitution,
which states clearly that ‘impeachment shall not extend further than to
remove from office.’
Donald Trump is no longer the President.
“Second,
I believe the defense team proved conclusively that President Trump’s
speech on January 6 neither implicitly nor explicitly encouraged the use
of violence or lawless
action.
“We
are a nation struggling with a public health emergency and economic
trouble. This politically motivated impeachment trial represents
another unnecessary and troubling
chapter to the terrible crimes committed against our government on
January 6. Our efforts should be focused on prosecuting the
lawbreakers, improving Capitol security, and healing the wounds of those
hurt on that sad day.”
House Democrats impeached President Trump on a single charge of “incitement of insurrection.” The Senate acquitted the former President on a 57-43 vote. Sixty-seven votes are required for conviction.
Senator Roger Wicker
“During the nearly 234 years of our Constitution's existence, no public official has ever been convicted in an impeachment trial after leaving office. That long-standing precedent was followed again today.
“After carefully reviewing the evidence and legal arguments from counsel for both parties, I am convinced that impeachment was intended only as a means of removing presidents and other officials from office. On two occasions during this trial, I had already voted not to proceed to trial based on this jurisdictional issue. My vote for acquittal today was consistent with those previous votes.
“Like all Americans, I am deeply troubled by the violent actions of individuals who invaded the U.S. Capitol and attacked our law enforcement officers on January 6. The facts surrounding this attack should be fully and thoroughly investigated, and those criminals should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
“I hope we can put this trial behind us and recommit to the cooperative spirit we need to meet our republic's pressing challenges.”

Minnie Pearl and bubba grove, the best Mississippi can offer
Zero chance of re-election with a guilty vote. But anyway, this whole impeachment farce was the biggest waste of time so far this year, by a comfortable margin.
The impeachment effort needed to fail. To prosecute a former public official under an impeachment provision sets a terrible precedent. If there is a law broken, charge the official. But, the legislative body serving as jurors for a former official is not a good precedence.
As they should have... the whole thing was total BS. The left is the absolute definition of hypocrisy.
Everyone should listen to Mitch McConnell's comments after the vote. He took Trump to the woodshe and finally stood up as a Ronald Reagan Republican.
Trump will go down in all of the history books but it will not be for what the democrats wanted it to be for.
Trump-2 Democrats-0
If the glove don’t fit! The Dems hate for him will hopefully go away. They spent 4 years basically saying since inauguration that they will try to remove him. This sham and Biden’s next 4 years will be a stain on the Democrat party. The infighting between them is already humorous and will continue to be the gift that keeps giving.
It’s all about the money! You cannot stay in office without support from the one percenters! Why risk your families well-being voting against these crazies! Goes both ways!!
How long before the dems invoke the 25th Amendment and get a new president who can check off at least 3-boxes (Harris)? She then chooses Willie Brown to be her VP. Another box checked off.
When do we appoint the commission to begin impeachment proceedings against Biden? This needs to be our SOP now. Vote him in and then impeach the hell out of him.
Might as well add the VP while we are at it. Loosing Pres and VP would give Pelosi a heart attack, so we could clear up several problems. Surely that is sufficient reason to impeach?
Gee, thanks, Minnie Pearl and Bubba Grove! You two, together with your Republican “colleagues,” have once again succeeded in making this state and this country the laughing stock and the pity for all to see. With no end in sight. One wonders what Putin has on Trump. As well one might inquire what Trump has on you and the rest of your ilk!
This is all over cable news as a national story. I thought this was "a website of news, commentary, culture, & jackassery in the Jackson, Mississippi area" and definitely not an echo chamber for political "conservatives."
We could do worse than Willie Brown and yes, I know the reference.
They will reap the whirlwind. Trump is going to do what Ron Paul and Ross Perot couldn’t. There will be a third party that will probably take enough voters from both the DNC and the GOP to dominate future elections.
Only the most fringe nutjob liberals want dudes wearing dresses in the girl’s bathroom and dudes playing girl’s sports. It certainly doesn’t inspire the Hispanic and African American vote.
No one in the GOP actually supports the current GOP establishment except the ones that want dudes in dresses in the girl’s bathroom. The majority hold their nose and vote GOP in the hopes of not losing more precious ground.
It will be interesting to see how the GOP and DNC collude to steal the next election.
Sorry to see Mr Trump wasn't convicted because he was clearly guilty beyond any doubt. We saw great courage today from the 7 Republican senators who voted their consciences. Thank you men and women. You stand tall. Unfortunately our senators supported the criminal and corrupt ex-president out of fear of their voters. At least Minority Leader McConnell spoke the truth about Mr Trump's conduct after the vote.
@7:12. You got it exactly right.
As a political question the Democrats did not want to "bar" Trump from seeking reelection. Neither do they want him convicted of a felony. Their reasoning is simple. Trump has done more damage to the Republican Party than they could. Why stop him now?
The real problem lies with "what happens if some U.S. Attorney actually follows his oath and prosecutes Mr. T?" That's what Mr. McConnell was saying, "you got him, have at it." Kind of daring the process.
If Mr. Trump were one of the thugs KF posts videos of burgling convenience stores he would be prosecuted. Why not Mr. T? Present the facts to a grand jury and if they indict, put 12 in the box. I feel pretty good about the federal criminal justice system but I would feel better if some right thinking team of Christian prosecutors allowed Mr. T to spend the rest of his days in federal custody. After all, he's the guy that turned the USA into Venezuela.
A year ago I was saying, no new wars, the economy is fine, there's nothing to complain about. Yeah, I'm embarrassed whenever he opens his mouth. It would be worse if it were Ms. Clinton. Mr. T's failure to act like an adult both before and after the election changed all that. On January 6, 2021, the USA officially became a banana republic. It will never, ever, not in 100,000 years, recover from the POTUSA egging on a mob to stop certification of an election. Never. We might ought to ask Mexico to take us on as a possession . . . or something.
Being barred from running for federal office is an impeachment remedy, which is not mooted upon expiration of a term. So I disagree with them on the constitutional issue, although I acknowledge that’s up for debate. That’s unlike the Louisiana GOP, who has a newfound appreciation for cancel culture, apparently.
As far as the Senator Hyde-Smith’s defense on the merits, the case against Trump was not based just on the Jan. 6 speech, and having sat through the proceedings, she was well-aware of that fact. With her misleading statement, she failed to be honest with her voters.
All in all, the GOP has shown there is absolutely no line Trump and like politicians can cross for which the party will hold them accountable. They are clearly not the adults in the room.
12:25- I am truly sorry that you have such hatred in your heart that you are blinded to truth and logical thinking. I hope you will step back, relax and one day see the light.
What 5:39 said. Bravo.
It was a futile effort from the start since there was no way the Trumplicans were going to convict their crime boss. Joe Biden needs Congressional Dems to put the Trump era behind us and move on with his agenda.
I think if Trump is going to be held to account in a criminal court, it will have to be done by the states. Georgia certainly could indict him. NY state WILL indict him.
The embarrassment of Cindy and Roger continues. If that wasn’t worthy of impeachment, then nothing will ever be. I’m ashamed to have such cowards represent our state. Outside of tweeting some pork projects, both are worthless.
The president's actions on January 6 were just plain disgusting and completely un-presidential. He brought shame on the high office he held. But he did not commit a "high crime or misdemeanor" and he should not be impeached. The only good the hypocrite Democrats did with this show trial was to reveal how unethical AND dangerous the spoiled brat Trump really is. If the American people don't care, no one can say they weren't warned.
What 11:29 said. Bravo. Twice.
Question that no one wants to address: Would the same speech be incitement of insurrection if the crowd remained peaceful? The answer should be unanimously NO based on the plain understanding of the words spoken.
Let’s move on people please! He had a few good ideas, immigration, China, energy independence were the 3 greatest factors facing us. But he acted like an idiot and I voted for him a second time but now I’m done. Kevin McCarthy would be a good future leader for the GOP. The people who were arrested were like the children of today, it’s not my fault he told me to do that, wrong your responsible for your own actions. To protest is one thing to break in is another.
People better be aware of what Biden is doing. Our basic societal fundamentals are being changed by the transgender athlete, letting anyone into our country for us to take care of and environmental causes are the most important thing. We can be balanced but cramming it down a taxpayers throat is not the answer. Remember he said just 1 month ago how he was uniting everyone then rammed thru a COVID bill he said he can’t wait to compromise on. We need to stand up for our values that many of you remember from the 1980’s, we got along and people helped each other. We listened to each other and worked as a country towards goals. Now people are afraid to make a comment for fear of losing their jobs. Let’s get our feelings off our shoulder and laugh a little. Sooner or later this pandemic will be behind us and we can all possibly be friends again.
Let's take a look at what the Constitution and History really say about the impeachment of an official by the House, and the conviction of the official by the Senate.
Cindy Hyde-Smith states:
"First, the impeachment of a former President is not part of the Constitution, which states clearly that ‘impeachment shall not extend further than to remove from office.’ Donald Trump is no longer the President."
Senator Hyde-Smith only quotes that portion of the constitution that is convenient for her to quote. Here is what the United States Constitution actually says:
"Judgment in Cases of Impeachment shall not extend further than to removal from Office, and disqualification to hold and enjoy any Office of honor, Trust or Profit under the United States; but the Party convicted shall nevertheless be liable and subject to Indictment, Trial, Judgment and Punishment, according to Law."
Notice what Senator Hyde-Smith left out. The punishment for impeachment by the House of Representatives and conviction by the Senate is limited to removal from office and disqualification from office. The Constitution does not state that impeachment and conviction can only be limited to current office holders.
That leads a reasonable person to ask: "Is there any time in the history of the United States where a person was impeached by the House of Representatives, but who was no longer in office?"
The answer to that is yes, there is one individual who resigned and thus was no longer in office but who was impeached by the House of Representatives.
William Belknap was the 30th United States Secretary of War, serving under President Ulysses S. Grant. William Belknap received kickbacks from a contract a Fort Sill. The House of Representatives, which was led by Democrats opposed to Reconstruction, investigated the issue. Belknap saw the writing on the wall, and resigned as Secretary of War. Still, the Democrats voted to draw up five articles of impeachment. The House of Representatives unanimously voted to impeach former Secretary of War Belknap.
The Senate debated over whether it had jurisdiction to try a former official. They voted 37–29 that they did have the jurisdiction to try a former official.
Senator Hyde-Smith is wrong. The Senate has voted twice that they did have the jurisdiction to try an official no longer in office.
Meanwhile, Senator Wicker is correct. He states "no public official has ever been convicted in an impeachment trial after leaving office." The Senate voted 35 to 25 to convict Belknap, with one Senator not voting. They needed 40 votes for it to pass.[2] Thus Belknap was acquitted, and Senator Wicker is correct.

Do you have any other sources than wikipedia ?
Even when he wins, he is still the ultimate loser. The office of POTUS will never fully recover from his reign.

I do so love reading the clown comments as though one slept through the last four years. It was clear the day Trump said he would run was the day the manure eaters decided he had to go. And just listen to yourselves eating the shit you’ve been spoon fed by a criminal media and pushed to disregard the actions of a political party that crawled up from the gook of the bottom of a barrel and bastardized laws. Yes the means justified the actions and the actions smelled of cow shit. Never in American history has a political power (Democrats) twisted truth, lied their asses off, and basically stuck their thumbs in eye of truth to destroy a person. Some of you sheep seem quite happy. Let’s see how long your joy lasts. All I know is that for four years, our enemies feared us, our taxes were lower and our fair weather friends in Europe respected us! How quickly things change.
The most effective way to punish Trump is to not put him on TV.
