St. Paddy's Day Parade Survives

The St. Paddy's Day Parade will be here for at least another year. The Clarion-Ledger reported today:

Thanks to a couple of donations made at the last minute, parade organizers of the Hal's St. Paddy's Parade & Festival have secured the funding necessary to pay for parade insurance and rent hundreds of specialty barricades....

This year's parade will take place on March 28. The theme is "Here's looking at Rude Men."

The parade and festival has been an ongoing Jackson tradition since it began in 1983.

After hearing of the parade concerns, Visit Jackson stepped in with a $15,000 donation and Downtown Jackson Partners contributed another $10,000. The $25,000 helped parade organizers raise the $45,000 needed to hold the parade, White said. ...

t costs about $30,000 to rent the 1,500 "specialty" barricades for the parade. The barricades are interlocking, and without gaps, to prevent people — especially children— from walking in and out of the parade route.

The cost to purchase the barricades outright is $80,000, not including the cost of storage and transportation, White said..... Rest of article.
Ok, this is what a tourism bureau is for, not propping up failed convention centers.

The key words here are:

"will be here for at least another year "

It was obvious from the Press Conference, this is their last year in Jackson.

( Unless the City of Jackson's Administration get's off their collective asses ).

Jackson has a tourism bureau?

Anonymous said...

Yes, 5:56. They also provide bail bond services.

Jackson has tourism? :)

The reason Jackson does not have the necessary parade barricades is due to the fact that they are in use across the city at bars and nightclubs. Specifically, Freelons, King of Diamonds, One Block East, and even Hal and Mals. The last time I drove by Hal and Mals there must have been 30 to 40 scattered in front of their building. What a joke!

Anonymous said...

Yeah, they drive in during the day for work and leave before dark.

Haters!

Anonymous said...

556- I think they have two

7:25 well a few fact fails for you. The issue is proper barricades, if you had read any of the stories concerning the issues of barricades for the parade, ; second any barricades near Hal and Mals are to block off the parking lot by Martins, owned by their company that leases it to jury parking and other parking for Hinds county business.

Anonymous said...

This 'parade' is a mere shadow of what it once was.

Face the facts, it's on life support.

It's time to move it into the suburbs.

But that's Mr. White's call.

8:32pm. So you’re saying that Hal and Mals needs several dozen barricades stacked in front of their building 12 months out of the year, correct? Blocking the lot on parade day is understandable and is so Hal and Mals can fully monetize the event. While it is a charitable event, losing the revenue of that week would be devastating to Hal and Mal’s.

The city purchases those barricades for public use, not to be “borrowed” indefinitely by private businesses.

Anonymous said...

This is stupid, if it raises sooo much money, why does Malcolm need the city’s help. The only person that should be paying for barricades and insurance is the one making money and that is not City of Jackson. That is Hal and Mals and Malcolm’s crew. If it’s his event, he should pay insurance and barricades. Just like any other business, it needs to stand on its own without our tax dollars, Dumb Dumb Dumb, He should pay law enforcement,,,too

Anonymous said...

They will have one in 2020 and see how it goes. If it continues in decline they will see if a suburban area wants to sponsor it and if not they will call it a good run and shut it down.

Anonymous said...

No suburb is going to want a drunk fest in their area

It’s clear that the Mayor simply resents white people coming into his town to have a good time if they don’t live here. It’s bitter petty resentment. Same attitude about the zoo. I recall his comments that white people won’t come to the zoo unless there’s a beer event. I’m waiting for something similar about the parade.

Side note, the county should chip in for the small cost to secure buying the barricades instead of leasing them. They helped with the zoo, why not the parade?

Anonymous said...

Just move it to the Farish Street Entertainment District. I'm sure there some federal money laying around that could be thrown at it!

Anonymous said...

5:58PM, then why not oblige the "wants Jackson to be the most radical city" Mayor?

Let him keep his high crime city...and let him stay out of ours.

P. S. did he really say "white people won’t come to the zoo unless there’s a beer event?" If so is there a link or vid to support this?

I hope the fucking thing folds up like a cheap suit!!!

I used to go and have a great time in my younger years. I believe a lot of the crowd has gotten older and many realize its not worth the hassle. Used to you didn't have to pay a fortune to park. No days you have the hustlers out barricading parking lots that were free parking on parade weekend forcing you to pay not knowing if they are employed by the lot owner. Cars broken into, having to set up the day before to get a good spot, fights, etc. At some point I, as well as others, said screw it, it's not worth it anymore.

Signed,

37 yo white male who used to have a large time at the parade.

7:39, just another SJW too stupid to admit Jackson is a sewer. Guess facts don't count to libs.

Go on back to your little safe place in Fondren and drink your Shirley Temples.

Is no one else going to comment on the theme: "Here's Looking at Rude Men"? I predict a woke focus that's mostly anti-Trump and anti-white-hetero-males. I'd love to be proven wrong on this.

Don't worry about 'the suburbs' chomping at the bit to import a parade of drunks witnessed by a gathering of other drunks. It won't happen.

I doubt barricades have a damned thing to do with anything. Who owns the fairgrounds and the hundreds of barricades stored in barns on that property? Besides, if a venue requires iron barricades strung together with bailin' wire to keep drunks from wandering into the parade route, what does that tell us anyway?

There are only two issues at play here and they are:

1) Mr. White's establishment making money.

3) Mayor Lumumba keeping white folks out of Jackson.

Barricades, what self respecting drunk needs barricades. Can't see this coming to any, as I choke on my vomit, Christian locale in the future.

@5:01 AM, I echo your comment. Madison, Brandon, Flowood, Clinton, etc. are not going to want that headache in their city; Ridgeland might. It won't upset me one bit of 2020 is it's last hooray.

This St. Paddy's thing reminds me of football game day tailgating. It's great as long as it does not become toooo big. It then defeats it's own purpose and gets out of control. The tail wags the dog and resources never intended for crowd control become necessary. The thing should be restructured or it will die of it's own bloat.

Anonymous said...

So pelahatchie has a stomp fest, madison has a skrawberry fest, Pearl has pearl day, Flowood has Flowood day.....let the man do what he wants. There are people who really hate Jackson on here. If you don’t like it then why are you so concerned with Kf’s blog? Go read mayor Mary’s blog. But if you don’t like something keep your mouth shut. Nobody really cares. The sweet tater queens used to bring a lot of money from all over. I never saw them but I never complained. Just be happy your on the top side of earth.

Another example....news reports the unveiling of a historic marker in downtown Jackson TODAY marking the original HQ of the Southeastern Conference. Several university presidents attended as did the SEC president. No mayor. Too many white people at this downtown event. I'm surprised he let them have the ceremony.

7:38, here's a quote from an Aug 14 2018 interview (I saw a video of it, but this quote is from the JFP unfortunately)

"if west Jackson is such a deterrent for people to visit the zoo, then what leads them to abandon that fear during these special events?" The mayor asked the room rhetorically. "What leads them to say, 'I'm afraid of west Jackson, but if you've got blues in the park, I'll come. I'm afraid of west Jackson, but if you've got beer, I can maybe get past that fear."

Anonymous said...

Man,You people are some haters!! Jackson has lots to offer and the parade is a highlight of the year. Lots of folks come out and there is plenty of kid friendly activity happening. Thank you Malcom, as a team, we can grow this event and this city.

@ 3:46,

I'm not sure if you're trolling or if you really believe that, but the fact remains that parade is on life support.

Years ago it really was a great event.

But then again . . . once upon a time . . . a visit to the Jackson Zoo was a pleasant way to spend an afternoon.

No 9:18, that's not why we don't want that goat rope in our cites.....we have functioning governments, low crime, good streets and clean neighbor hoods with working schools.

We don't want it here because, people with your and Chokeway's mind set might see what its like to not live in a sewer and we sure don't want you to like it and move here and turn it into every other city dim-o-cRATs have destroyed.

It still amazes me that you want to be soooo progressive, you're willing ignore every thing wrong with dim-o-crat logic of we'll keep giving away everything to buy your vote.

Anonymous said...

When the City of Jackson holds its Christmas parade, or the Black Rodeo parade, why don't they use the barricades?

Anonymous said...

Move it to the Suburbs? What parade around Dicks and Lowe’s and the 5000 baseball fields preparing all of our future major leaguers?

Anonymous said...

The reason 10:22 is one has to be literate enough to read & understand:

"DO NOT CROSS BARRICADE"

Those that can are at their jobs at McDonalds, Taco Bell and KFC.

Hal & Mals have not paid property taxes in years! Look it up on Hinds county tax assessor website. They also did not make lease payments to the state of MS for years! To make things worse the legislature passed a bill allowing them to buy the property without a competitive bidding process. He gets appointed to a position he’s is not qualified for! In summary, the tax payers of MS get screwed on multiple levels by HM’s and whatever loser passed the bill. They should not own the property they sit on when they never paid lease fees, taxes or anything else! Complete bullshit! Look it up, we the tax payers got screwed!! Parade my ass

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
