Police shooting in Pearl.

Pearl police shot a man during a traffic stop on I-20 tonight after he pulled a gun during a traffic stop.  The man is expected to live. MBI is investigating.

Update (4/1): The Pearl Police Department issued the following statement:

On March 31, 2018, at approximately 8:56 p.m., a (one) Pearl Police officer was involved in an officer involved shooting on I-20 east near mile marker 50 (between Pearson Road and Airport Road). Thankfully and by the grace of God combined with the officer’s training and quick response, the officer did not sustain any physical injuries as a result of the incident.

The suspect, 24 year old Oscar Willie Leontez Curtis of East Cohea Street in Jackson was charged with one count of assault on a law enforcement officer. Curtis was transported to the Rankin County Jail with bond to be set at a later date.

Due to the incident being an officer involved shooting, no other details can be released at this time. The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation as protocol was notified of the incident and will be handling all investigations related to the incident in efforts to maintain the integrity of the case.

The City of Pearl, as well as Rankin County law enforcement, will not tolerate any attempts to harm our communities, let alone our public safety officers that have taken oaths to protect and preserve our society.

The public can assist in the investigation by not speculating, assuming, or making social media posts that are unfounded or untrue.

Pearl Police Department in working with the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation will release more information in the case once it’s allowed.

Lastly, our department wishes to thank all agencies that assisted at the scene last evening and ask for continued prayers for all those apart of and affected by the incident.

Pull a gun on a cop and you should be shot. The cops risk their life every time they answer a call. And for very low pay.

Pulling a gun at a traffic stop = you should die because you're obviously too stupid to live

Chalk one up for the good guys. If you’d pull a gun on a cop at a traffic stop, I suspect there are very few instances where you wouldn’t pull a gun on a regular citizen. Fortunately, this was in Rankin County, so we won’t have to worry about this guy for a long time.

Well duh, you pull a gun on the po-po's and there's a very good chance you're gonna get shot.

Play stupid games....well, you know the rest...

Cut the motorist some slack. He thought he was still in Jackson.

Here is a not so novel idea. Let's put up toll booths entering Jackson to keep Madison and Rankin County residents out of Jackson.

In fairness this guy is entitled to a lawyer and we will learn more details as it evolves. We will find out if the police officer used justified force or if it was like so many others just a case of simply shhoting a black person. I am white but I have realized there are privliges I enjoy simply because of my skin color. Now let's see what happens.

Is there a video of this person pulling a gun and being shot by the police?

2:28 If you put up toll booths to enter Jackson they would be another money losing proposition. Nobody really wants to go there anyway.
5:29 you are correct in your statement that he is entitled to legal council (which we will most likely have to pay for). As far as your comment about being shot because he is black and your white privilege bull$hit, stick it where the sun doesn’ t Shine. Pull a gun on a law enforcement officer and you can expect serious consequences.

......"The public can assist in the investigation by not speculating, assuming, or making social media posts that are unfounded or untrue."......

Yeah, like this is going to keep the democrats from posing on the WLBT facebook page.

There are instances of police using excessive force against both black and white people, and each is regrettable, but the fact is that the vast majority are eventually ruled justified. Don't fight with the police, don't try to run, definitely don't have something in your hand and point it at them.

Right. The officer used 'unjustified force'. I think he should have issued this command at least ONCE: "Put away that gun and rethink the potential consequences and lets have a civilized conversation". THAT would be good police work.

Hey 5:29, let's try something. You drive through Pearl and pull a gun and see what happens. I think you'll find out very quickly that skin color is not an issue. Being stupid is.

Bottom line is this... police must be more responsible in events such as this... do we know if the gun was real or even loaded. Did the pearl PD shoot out of bias reasoning such as a young black male... or was the policeman being responsible. No one actually knows what happened. The police force must not be too quick to shoot.

Ain't nothing gunna change until we get some black leadership elected statewide and in white house... don't be saying Ben Carson or clarance Thomas either. Hell... they aren't black. Tell me when Ben Carson the Dr. Ever been to a black neighborhood or been shot at by the police. Hell let's get real black leadership and until then cops will continue killing blacks... Just like it's huntin season. Thats what's up!

The MS Bureau of Investigation is investigating the shooting. I know from my law practice that they generally do an excellent job and are professional and objective. They will figure out the truth of what happened. The City of Pearl did the right thing by immediately calling them in.

Does it matter if the gun was real "or even loaded"? If you are stupid enough to pull anything resembling a gun on a cop, then you take what you deserve.

And let me tell you @12:18, electing black state leadership won't chance a cops mind when a gun is pulled on him.

deadly force should be just that !! there should be only one story to tell -- Pearl is not Jackson so you just cant go around pulling guns on the police without getting killed!! while JPD is getting off the phone and out of the restaurant, Pearl, Brandon, Flowood and Rankin County law enforcement are on the job. So if you want to steal, loot, arm rob someone or shoot somebody - stay in Jackson with Kenneth Stokes

Pearl PD is awesome! They protect us in Ridgeland at the clubs. Even in uniform with Pearl issued equipment! Gotta love them.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
