List of bridge closings

Posted below is the list of bridges closed by Governor Phil Bryant yesterday.   The list will be updated as bridges are fixed and more are added to the list after inspection.  There are 23 in Hinds County and none in Madison or Rankin counties.

Make America Great Again.

Put people to work rebuilding roads, bridges, eroding and outdated water/sewer systems. A great place to start would be Hinds County. Plenty of opportunities for rebuilding infrastructure there.

If any infrastructure spending is to occur in Hinds County, the jobs should be awarded to companies located outside of these areas. Too much "Socrates" in and around Hinds county and the City of Jackson.

This doesn't look like a complete list of closed bridges. I know Holmes County has at least two. Are these just the ones closed because the Feds ordered it or whatever?

What's the traffic count of these bridges?

How many of these are county roads?

Remember Obama and the phrase "shovel-ready jobs"?

Maybe the people fixing the Hinds County bridges can use the money from their shovel-ready jobs to move to downtown Jackson and live in the new Lamar Life Lofts, walking distance from the Farish Street Entertainment District with its seventeen blues clubs.

Jackson is on the RISE!

There was a bridge that was out for over 2 years in Bolton on Champion hill road. Piles of dirt on both sides and just sat like that for 2 years and for 6 months had to detour around it. Their solution was to build up a road on a farmers adjacent land, leave it gravel for about a year, then pave it, then fix the bridge. I don't know how long it actually took to fix it but it wasn't long as I travel through there frequently. Seemed like all the extra work on the side road could have been avoided if they would have just jumped on the bridge quickly while travelers used the detour for a few months. Seemed very inefficient.

11:02, that's a bit petty when you consider 40 years ago there was nothing in Madison or Rankin. Some of these bridges are 100 years old.

You're saying that any time prior to 1978 there were NO roads and bridges in Madison/Rankin Counties? Really?

It's difficult to maintain infrastructure when all of the money is going out the back door.

This is a list of bridges that were open that needed closing (after the FHWA mandated inspections), but the counties didn't for whatever reason. Also this list is all county bridges which are maintained by a county engineer hired by the BOS, who could fire him if he closed the wrong bridge. MDOT maintains State Routes.

Madison has closed around 16 bridges, and has since repaired most and reopened a good many.

Hey you geniuses, all the bridges begin with “SA”meaning State Aid. Same for the Champion Hill bridge, State Aid. Wonder why the State hasn’t prioritized projects in Hinds County that the State is supposed to fund and oversee? Perhaps the same reason I-55 to Byram has taken a decade while I-55 in Madison was done in a fraction of the time.

As for Socrates, it’s been at least five years since he did any work for Hinds County. Y’all can bitch all you want about Hinds/Jackson, just try to get the facts correct.

State Aid provides the funds for County Bridges that the BOS instruct the the county engineer to use State Aid to fund. State Aid then will over see that the project has been built to State Aid standards, which is not the same standard as MDOT maintained bridges. State Aid has no control over the county engineer or the work he does using county funds. County bridges are county bridges until State Aid funds touches them, then and only then does The State Aid engineer have any control.

This is why the Feds stepped in months ago and required MDOT (because federal money flows through MDOT to get to the counties) to inspect all county bridges. MDOT hired several engineering firms to do these inspections. MDOT paid these firms with funds that would normally go into State Aid to pass the counties to replace bridges. Now the counties have all these bridges closed with no State Aid money to replace them, therefore requiring the counties to use funds collected via county taxes and not the user fee (Gas Tax).

I-55 Byram and I-55 Madison were two different projects. Apples and oranges, just because they are both on 55 does not mean you can compare the two.

Thank you 9:42 for speaking the truth. It's been a long time since Hinds County was front page news about anything....about as long as the day Stokes left the board and Anderson was replaced.

The State Aid program is broken. Its broke and its broken. Counties have been trained to rely on state money for "state aid roads". And because of that, those roads are falling further and further behind in maintenance.

The state loves to have everybody come kneel at the alter to get their crumbs, but then when the budget is tight there are no crumbs to give out. But rest assured the State Aid bureaucracy hasn't lost any jobs.

According to the news, Hinds has repaired 36 bridges over the last three years and 7 are under repair today. Madison has repaired almost all of their inspected bridges. It was interesting to hear how the news people acted like this topic came out of the blue. The state Association of Supervisors have been begging the legislature for help for several years.

The real emergency is in these counties that have maybe 10,000 to 20,000 citizens. They have nearly as many miles of roads and bridges, but a fraction of the tax base. Those roads are likely going to be permanently closed without state help.

Does anybody on here remember the debate on this blog a few weeks ago about the HB that raised the weight limit for trucks on county bridges? Of course it passed.

5:04 is hitting the Nail on the Head here. County Board of Supervisors determine where their priorities are to spend Local Ad Val money on. When a road becomes State Aid there are different rules and criteria to meet when spending State Aid-MDOT Special Project monies. Problem here is that MDOT has all these New Offices, Project Offices,Equipment etc sitting around and say they have no Maintenance money for existing Roadways-- I believe Ms travelers would rather have good roads before nice Electronic msg Boards, before all the Cables down the medians to prevent accidents, before all the Public Service messages when the Commissioners are going to their respective Ballgames. Someone needs to be looking at the State Aid formula-that directs a portion of MDOT money to Counties for mandated repair & maintenance of State Aid roads -- MDOT has maybe 25-30% of Road miles in our State, the majority of Road miles are the responsibility of Counties & Municipalities in our State. It's time we recognize this disproportionate division of existing money & correct it.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
