A hoodlum shot at a Belhaven resident when he was caught casing a driveway. The victim posted on Nextdoor:
JPD was called. Three units responded. 3 units showed pretty quickly. This vehicle seems to match the description of a vehicle suspected in numerous auto burglaries in the Belhaven neighborhood in the last few weeks.

Stories like this are why we can't even take a relaxing walk thru white neighborhoods. Everybody gonna use this story as an excuse to racially profile, which by the way the man taht was supposedly "shot at" must have been racially profiling to walk outside just because he sees a young black man. Wow. Paranoid much?
Since the guy SHOT at him, his suspicions pretty much proved to be well-founded.
Oh so lets just take his word for it right? Did anybody hear the gunshots? Where is the bullet hole? Has Kingfish asked himself these pertinent questions?
These hair trigger reactions without regard to the facts is how so many innocent young black men end up in prison.
10:45 slowly walking down driveways, on private property, checking out vehicles while another vehicle follows you on the road is pretty suspicious, independent of race. And it turns out the homeowner (the actual victim here) was correct and the dude was up to no good. So you are complaining that someone paid attention to his neighborhood, noticed something suspicious, walked out to check it out, got shot at by a young black dude and the VICTIM is the one to blame because you aren't comfortable taking a walk. Makes perfect sense...
Are you doubting the truthfulness of the account 10:45?
Our neighborhood control freak Tom Head always works to suppress these types of reports on Nextdoor.
I would have done the same thing IF I WERE WHITE and saw a young black male scoping my neighbors home and I knew the neighbors and new they were not black. I would have gone out there as well. I would have called 911 first and then gone outside and also I WOULD HAVE TAKEN MY PISTOL WITH ME. So yeah I definitely would have racial profiled and anyone who says they wouldn't is full of shit.
10:45/10:57 is the reason no one will be able to fix Hinds County in our lifetime
This is not a relaxing walk through a neighborhood. Thugs are casing cars to steal or burglarize.
These are not innocent men no matter what color they are.
The thugs are lucky this homeowner was not armed. Most homeowners in Mississippi armed when confronting the same situation.
ATTN 10:57 We are talking about JACKSON not MADISON!!!!!
@ 10:45 - when I take a "relaxing walk through white neighborhoods" I tend to stay on the sidewalk or the side of the street I don't meander up and down everybody's driveway or "check out" their backyards. If YOU do then, yeah....you DESERVE to be profiled, racially and otherwise.
Belhaven is so dangerous. Im glad I got out when I did. It is worth your life to live in that area now. With Chockwe coming in, there is no telling how bad it will get. All those GreatThingsJXN guys can remain insecure about the crime in the 6th most shrinking city in the USA.
To 10:57
Actually committing crimes and leading the thug life is how so many not so innocent young black men end up in prison
White or black I'm going to be suspicious of you if you're lurking around a car in a driveway that doesn't belong to you. Have you thought of that? That is probably what was going through the victims mind at the time.
Keifers is worth your life to go to. Not worth going to Belhaven. Its time is past. Everyone needs to move to Rankin or Madison
I am moving From Belhaven as soon as I can sell my house- that is if I can at all. No one wants to buy anything in this trashy place.
I've never understood why it's important to list a suspect on a neighborhood Web page by there race. Seems a little prejudice to even feel it unnecessary. Why don't we just call Muslims terrorist. As a student at a local university near Belhaven I hope my generation doesn't base behavior based on one's race or religious identity.
Why do cops rush to the scene of the incident and not try to guess the perps escape route and go there to try and apprehend them?
Agreed 11:48. For that matter, why do they insist on identifying male or female? That seems sexist. And the terms skinny or fat? Or age even?
I have lived in four different houses in Belhaven over thirty-five years and have never had any problems. I've got great neighbors and an eight-minute commute to work. I don't have any desire to move somewhere else.
Bend over 11:48. You are an easy mark.
Skinny or fat are very different from someone's race. Listing a person's race is totally irrelevant to the situation and it could be insensitive to the other black males whites tend to associate with this behavior. Society caused this and it's quite unfair and I've learned I am privileged due to my white race. If you can't recognize that I would guess your not well educated
11:48:
Knowing what color he is cuts down on how many 6'1" skinny guys lurking around at night you might suspect is the thief/shooter. I would expect race to be named if he had been white as well.
And you probably think the way you do because of brain-washing by your college professors.... cops reference it on every call, snowflake.
11:48 Has got to be just trying to stir the pot.
10:45/10:57 is a troll and should be ignored.
If you describe them as skinny or fat, that would be body shaming. Age? That's not good because of age discrimination.
Damn it. We're all people. Just say a person tried to shoot you on your own property. The police can work with that.
Did this resident even check to see if there was a pokemon stop nearby?
So many Donners on this thread...
Slow day at the JFP.
Why aren't they busy defending the suspected killer(s) of Kingston Frazier?
Once again people: look up the definition of an internet troll. Posters here are making incendiary remarks for folly. Don't take the bait you toothless, mouth breathing, trailer park living cretin.
"11:48 Has got to be just trying to stir the pot. "
Sadly, I really think he is that ignorant and/or stupid. There's a bunch of them around colleges for some reason.
====================================
"Don't take the bait you toothless, mouth breathing, trailer park living cretin. "
You're not very good at trolling yourself, are you?
What if it was the meter man or a car mechanic that does house calls? Snowflakes start shooting when they see a black man hanging around there car. I am glad no one got killed.
This was posted to nextdoor around midnight. I saw the post on nextdoor, and you can note in the top screen shot that the phone says 8:17 AM and the first responses were "8 hours ago." I don't think traveling car mechanics, meter men, or people taking an innocent stroll are up on other people's property for any legitimate reason in the middle of the night.
A car trailing along with the lights out as Leroy Doe walks through private property taking a leisurely stroll. Right.
Kiss my ass, Idiot!
Because I have an alternate viewpoint (non-priveleged)that means I must be a troll?
What are yall doing on the internet anyway don't you have some black people you need to go harass???
Was working a crossword recently. Clue: "Who wins a debate on the Internet?" Answer: "no one".
4:48 Nope, done for the day!
No, 4:48, because you automatically jumped to the conclusion that, just because the shooter was black, the person who id'd him must be a racist for watching him to begin with. And with all due respect, that is stupid and a racist comment for you to make. It was midnight, the person did not have a meter worker's uniform on, it's highly unlikely the person was a car repairman working at midnight or a meter checker working at midnight, was suspiciously looking at other peoples' cars, and being followed by another car with its lights off. Anyone but you would find that suspicious, not racist. I'd watch such a person whether he was white, black, etc. But you automatically call the resident a racist for doing what any reasonable person would have done. And then in your reply, you once again make a racist comment by asking if the poster has any other black people to go harass. Geees, you're trying to call others racist, but it is YOU who is being racist, you just don't see it. Lord help us. It's people like you that make race relations worse, not better.
No name? Fake poster.
Look the bottom line is this... if a Belhaven resident sees a black person in there neighborhood they assume they're up to no good and call security. I know this for a fact. Look at next door website for the area. Headlines are suspicious black male... how sad that we judge people based on color of skin. Not sure if it's our current president that is cause of this or just racist people. Sad part I'd I know a lot of blacks that voted for trump. Please bring back Obama now. We need to overcome so much.
I am flat-out amazed at the posters on here (assuming they are being honest) who actually believe there is no cause for concern, alarm or suspicion when a man is seen walking through front yards and up into driveways in the middle of the night.
Really; Who takes a casual stroll in that manner? Who would not find that to be suspicious? Who would conclude "Wait! He appears to be black so I better check myself to be sure I'm not reacting with racial compulsion"? Who might conclude, "Oh, its probably just a boy who lost his ball glove earlier in the day".
13:17Race tells us what he looks like. Ever think about that? Your notion that identifying an offender's race would traumatize a third-party is utterly ridiculous, especially coming from a white guy. This may be upsetting to hear, but a perfect example of black privilege would be to use his race as an excuse not to identify him and therefore making it more likely that he gets away to burglarize a home.
Wouldn't a better approach be to ask the person on your property what he is doing or even if he is lost? Surely we can all agree it's best to offer help to someone before assuming they are harmful. I saw a older male mid 60's hippie (race doesn't matter) looking around the dorms last week I simply asked if I could help him. He was very friendly and was looking for food. Helped him and I contributed to society as well. People respond best when there not falsely mislabeled or threatened. This we can all agree on I'm sure.
A few years ago, while working from my home office, I saw a guy, a Charles Manson lookalike, all tatted up walk between mine and my neighbors house out on the Reservoir. When I stepped outside, I had a video recorder in one hand and a .45 in the other. I confronted the guy when he emerged from between the houses. He said he was a meter reader and he did have a device of some sort in one hand. I told him he should wear the customary vest with "Meter Reader" on it so nobody gets confused. He told me I should go "F" myself.
Well, I called the utility company and ultimately was connected with the home office in Texas where I filed my complaint. As suspected, when confronted by his employer, the "Meter Reader" denied everything. Bad for him, I then pulled still photos from the video I had taken of him and sent those to his supervisor. Later, I learned the Meter Reader was fired for violating company policy in regards to NOT WEARING his "Meter Reader" vest and additionally, lying about the incident.
We all have two hands, make sure you approach every potentially confrontational situation with something in each that will result in a win, whichever it is you have to use!
If the homeowner was black, which there are many in Belhaven, he would not have cared or thought twice if a person was suspiciously up and down his property at any time... thinkin... "I'm black... whoever that is out there walking around lookin at my stuff is black, so... everything's cool?"
These fakers need to get a life.
Again... slow day at the JFP.
5:42, I agree TOTALLY with your comment. This man SHOT at the homeowner. Are people missing that point???? Totally AMAZED that some are posting Pollyanna nonsense about talking to a possible thief, feeding him, and "contributing to society." How quickly some have forgotten Carolyn Temple. Reading some of these comments is just unreal. Wow.
Yes, let your relatives who attend your wake tell others that you offered a stranger food and a warm blanket just before he eviscerated you with a shank.
Who knows - you might even be quoted in the paper and you can send a clipping to a relative who lives way off and couldn't attend the funeral.
