Carjacker was a platinum member of the catch & release program.

It is becoming too much of a familiar story in Hinds County.  Hoodlum commits crime.  Police does its job and catches him.  Hoodlum stays in prison for a year or two.  He gets back out on the street and terrorizes the community some more until he is locked up again.  The case of Denarious Watts is one of the better examples of the Hinds County Catch & Release program.  JPD issued this statement yesterday:

On Friday, March 17, 2017, at approx. 12:32 AM, Jackson Police Officers investigated an armed carjacking that occurred at Woodridge Apartments, 1533 Raymond Rd. The victim stated that two armed black males, along with another unarmed black male robbed her for her belongings and took her 2016 red Hyundai Elantra with a Herrin Gear paper tag. There were no injuries reported. The suspects all wore dark colored clothing.

On Friday, March 17, 2017, at approx. 5:51 AM, Jackson Police Officers investigated an armed carjacking that occurred in the 4900 block of Laurel Oak Dr. The victim, as she exited her residence, observed an armed black male suspect pointing a handgun at her eight year old son’s head demanding the vehicle. The suspect was standing near the driver’s side of the vehicle demanding that he get out of the rear seat of the vehicle. The eight year old exited the vehicle, and the suspect fled the scene in her 2014 silver Honda Accord. There were no injuries reported. The victim observed a red Hyundai, occupied by two black males, matching the description of an earlier carjacked vehicle near this location fleeing the scene along with her vehicle. The Honda Accord was recovered on Monday, March 20, 2017 at an undisclosed location.

On Saturday, March 18, 2017, Precinct One officers, acting on a tip detained Javaris Thompson- 19, at a South Jackson residence. He was detained for questioning regarding these two incidents. Robbery/Homicide Detectives were able to recover evidence linking Thompson to the Woodridge Apartments carjacking. He was questioned and booked into the city jail on unrelated charges. He was later charged with Arm Carjacking and Poss. of Stolen Goods.

On Saturday, March 25, 2017, the stolen red Hyuandai Elantra was recovered in Simpson County. It was occupied by a black male juvenile, and Denarious Watts-21. They were both detained for questioning. Subsequently, Denarious Watts was later developed and identified as one of the suspects responsible for robbing the victim. He has been charged with Armed Robbery of an Individual and Auto Theft. Javaris Thompson was also developed and identified as one of the suspects. He has also been charged with Armed Robbery of an Individual and Auto Theft in addition to the previous charges.

Watts was indicted in December 2013 for five counts of house burglary in Clinton that were committed in August of that year.* The case just lingered around as it they often do in Judge Kidd's court and was finally adjudicated on August 31.  Watts pleaded guilty to four counts of house burglary and prosecutors agreed to drop one of the counts.  Judge Kidd sentenced him to serve 15 years in prison and 3 years of post-release supervision buuuuut he suspended 8 years of the prison sentence.  Watts only had to serve seven years in but Judge Kidd gave him credit for time served in the Hinds County jail.

Watts
Watts became eligible for parole on June 6, 2016 and was released on August 24, 2016.  He only had to serve one year with a GPS monitor upon his release.  You read that correctly.  He pleaded guilty to four house burglaries, served less than three years in prison, and is committing more felonies as he graduates from so-called non-violent crimes to armed robbery.

*There were two separate indictments.  13-701 had one count and 13-720 had four counts.

Kingfish note: Forget catch & release, this suspect went through a revolving door.  The police did their job on this case only to get backstabbed by the criminal justice system.  This outcome is what the proponents of HB #585 desired.  The next time one of these Republicans who voted for this bill brags about being tough on crime, shove this case in their face. The only one who voted against it in the Jackson metro area was Rep. John Moore.

The Jackson Mayoral candidates will preach mightily about what they plan to do about crime but not one of them -not one- will raise hell about catch and release.  They won't criticize the District Attorney, they won't criticize the judges, they won't even acknowledge the problem.

The District Attorney and MDOC need to come get their boy and throw his ass back in jail for the rest of his 15-year sentence.  Go file that notice or affidavit with Judge Kidd and make it happen.  These thugs think nothing of pointing a gun at a child's head and threatening to kill him.  Treat them as the scum that they are.

Winston Kidd strikes again. How's that "gettin' even" plan working out?

Put a robe on him and call him a judge.

These thugs think they are "men". They needed a gun to get an 8-year old out of a car. Let that sink in for a moment.

Seriously, we need to start executing some of these guys the next day.

Heck, even executin' the wrongly convicted man serves its purpose sometimes.

Great example of why we need an island far, far away to dump these creatures on and leave them there permanently.

Kingfish nailed it: "It's a revolving door." And it happens all the time. I had a Nissan stolen in the Fondren area last September. Three months later, after the insurance company called and said (now) their car was in the Jackson impound lot, and had been for over a month. The perp had a lengthy rap sheet and was already back on the street. I had to help get the car released from impound and the insurance company said this city and New Orleans were the worst in the nation to deal with. Long story short when we checked the trunk there were burglary tools galore and even a hot TV and some other entertainment stuff. Dude will never be prosecuted according to a very helpful detective. Cops did their job, but courts failed,

The original sentence is probably what most counties around here with have done for a person this age. Kid messed up after he as given a decent deal and now deserves to be revoked for entire sentence. Also, law requires credit be given for time served prior to being sentenced. Really cant blame the Judge in this instance.

If Jackson were Dodge City in 1879, what would be the name of the movie?

52% of all felons have been arrested multiple times. Mississippi's prison population has increased more than any other State's.
It became necessary years ago, to try to reduce the prison population as the costs are increasing.
Hinds County isn't the only county with " catch and release". And, when you try to be " fair" to every county about how many of their criminals you can incarcerate in prison, bad things happen.
You don't want tax increases to build more prison space. You don't want to put money in on the front end to keep kids off the street. You don't want to prevent unwanted pregnancies where the unwanted kid grows up neglected and abused. So this is what you get.

Not justifying the idiot's actions, because jail is for suckers and anybody that does anything to place themselves in there are stupid.

But with poverty comes crime and needless to say, Mississippi is piss poor and they want to run this state on air and prayer, not money and logic.

We have Back the Badge laws - but make access to firearms easy

We increase budgets for DPS and increase trooper pay - but don't do anything to remedy the crime

We give tax cuts to companies that haven't even created jobs nor based in Mississippi

Mississippi doesn't believe in passing preventive legislation but practices reactionary legislation - which shows that the state is unorganized and not focused on solving problems.

You get what you pay for when it comes to essential services - thanks to the good ol' boy Christian Conservative Mississippi Center for Public Policy, along with the American Legislative Exchange Council and Heritage Foundation.

People - wake up and do your homework on those groups! They are keeping this state in the doldrums.

Executions eliminate recidivism.

I bet he has trouble finding a job with 2 felonys on his record. How is he suppose to get on the straight and narrow if nobody will hire him? If no employer wants to give him a chance to prove hinself, what's he suppose to do? Pray the poor away?

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
