Suspect in Keifer's attack finally goes to trial

Update: The post did not include the victim's injuries.  The victim suffered a tripoid fracture to her cheekbone and still suffers nerve damage on one side of her face and pain in her jaw.

Demarcus Jefferson will go to trial on March 2, 2015 for a savage attack on a young woman in the parking lot of Keifer's Restaurant on Poplar on March 27, 2012.  Jefferson and his partner Demonta McCray stuck a gun in the young woman's face, robbed her, and then brutally beat her in the face.  Mr. McCray is currently serving a twenty-year sentence in MDOC for his part in the armed robbery.  MDOC records state he entered the system on December 28, 2012.

Jefferson was indicted on four counts of armed robbery, felon in possession of a firearm,  using a gun to cause bodily harm to the victim, and using a firearm during the commission of a felony on June 6, 2012.  Judge Tomie Green reassigned the case from Judge Bill Gowan to Judge Winston Kidd.  The case was continued several times.  Judge Kidd finally set the upcoming trial date on January 7, 2015. Jefferson has been a resident of the Hinds County Detention Center since at least December 28, 2012.

Kingfish note: Its taken nearly three years to get this guy to trial on an armed robbery charge.  Three years he sat in the county jail instead of MDOC.  Three years of a victim waiting for justice.  Other counties get this done in less than a year.  Hinds takes three years while the DA says that is just the way it is but hey, his office is working hard and the Senior Circuit Judge tells us that we have unrealistic expectations.

What happened with the Gluckstadt rezoning meeting from yesterday? What about a update please. You're the ONLY person covering it.

When he gets out, he's going to do it again. Just have a little 'accident' in prison with this kind of thug...save my money on reforming non-violent criminals. yes--black or white non-violent criminals.

"Judge Tomie Green reassigned the case from Judge Bill Gowan to Judge Winston Kidd."

There's your problem

This is unacceptable.

Meanwhile; Today's Clarion has stories about the work on Capitol Street and paving projects in Natchez. They didn't even combine the two.

They weren't granting any continuances yesterday at docket call, so there are a ton of cases set for trial on that March date. Don't be surprised if it gets continued again.

None of this is happening. It is all made up. There are hundreds of thousands of people that would move back to Jackson tomorrow if only we had housing, accurate water metering and new trees downtown.

Even if the Miss.S.Ct. never reverses a case based on a speedy trial violation (270 days), the fact that it takes 3 to 4 years to get a case to trial in Hinds County should be a serious cause for alarm.

Two clerks shot in Jackson robbery

Two convenience store clerks were shot during an armed robbery in Jackson Wednesday morning.

Jackson Police are searching for two suspects who robbed Express Fuel located at Bailey Avenue and Northside Drive. After the workers were shot the suspects escaped with the store safe.

RE: "Three years he sat in the county jail instead of MDOC. Three years of a victim waiting for justice."

Frankly, living in the HCDC seems to be a whole lot more hell-like than the MDOC facilities. Not real sure justice is being delayed.

Keifers refuses to get their survellience cameras hooked up and Hinds County refuses to take this to trial. It's as if they're seeing who can drag their feet the longest, regardless of countless more crimes committed against Keifer's patrons and Jackson citizens, alike.

Unidentified man found dead near JSU

Police said a man was found dead at a home near JSU this morning.

Even more reason to go to Krilakis. I just wish they had Kiefer's feta dressing.

Kristos is wonderful.

@ 11:53 - I have to disagree. I haven't been in 6-9 months, but the service has been pretty bad for me. The gyro itself was fairly good, but the curly fries were greasy and under cooked.

Krilakis has some of the best french fries I have ever had. They are the real deal.. double fried with a great crunch and tossed in sea salt.

Even better you can BYO wine or beer with no corkage fee.

Kristos is for new Madison people that didnt grow up going to Vasilio's. What a joke.

What a fulfilling life this guy must lead

New Greek place just opened in Flowood. However, I'm afraid to even mention it since these comments are usually so heated between which Metro area is better.

Please don't refer to Demonta McCray as "Mr." He's a low life piece of sh!# who doesn't deserve the title. From now on use Sh!#head McCray or feel free to use your imagination. Anything but "Mr."

I am the manager at Keifers my name is Jeff Stricklin. This entire report is wrong the attack happened in front of the apartment complex down the street from Keifers the victim will tell you that herself. As far as cameras in the parking lot they have been installed and functional for a month.

All the Greek eateries in the metro use plates manufactured in China. Should we be discussing Chinese buffets?

@ 8:52 - Whoever made the decision for the narrow parking spaces in your parking lot should be fired.

Here is a message from the victim, whom I know very well.

I am the survivor of this crime. I don't like the legal/court jargon sound of "victim." I want to say thank you to Jeff Stricklin at Keifers. You are the reason JPD arrived so quickly and I would like to thank you in person one day. I was not in the keifers parking lot at the time of the attack. However, I was less than 15 yards from keifer's, laying unconscious in the middle of the street after nearly being kidnapped, robbed, and beaten by two armed men. Keifer's is not on trial here. That is not the focus of this report. Belhaven area is not safe. Safety is an illusion really. All we can do is be vigilant. As for me, getting my enhanced conceal carry gives me more of a chance to defend myself and my life when there are thugs out there who do not value human life. People like this do not worry about breaking laws. So, being arrested repeatedly and illegally possessing a firearm to hurt innocent people does not matter to these people . It's when the people with good intentions DO NOTHING that bothers me the most.

Kingfish said...

Tell you what, you guys have a security problem and have had one for some time. Want to talk about a Mayor's brother who was robbed at gunpoint and assaulted on the curb on Memorial Day? Or the list of crimes that have been reported to JPD at the Keifer's address? I have that list around, somewhere.

'Our security cameras have been functional for a month.'

They should have been functional years ago. Yet another reason I will never visit your establishment.

Jeff, you were better off staying silent. Not in front of Keifers, but a whole fifteen yards down the street? Excuse us. Indignant? Really? The apartment complex down the street sounds so much farther away than the apartment complex next door. A whole month? Cameras have been up a whole month? Wow! Excuse us again! Jeff, seeing as how you're here, how many cars have been stolen from the Keifers parking lot since you built your new building? And how many people have been assaulted/mugged/robbed on or near your property since you built the new building? And how many people have asked you that entire time to get those cameras hooked up? Thankfully the Belhaven Building has cameras that have helped as you guys ignored the cries for help.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
