Gerald Barber will not seek re-election.

Madison County Tax Assessor Gerald Barber just issued the following press release:

GERALD BARBER ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT

February 20, 2015 - Today Madison County Tax Assessor Gerald Barber announced he is retiring from office this year and will not be seeking another term.

Barber is endorsing his Chief Appraiser, Norman Cannady, who joined the Tax Assessor’s staff in 2003, to take his place as Tax Assessor.

“My last request to the voters in Madison County is that they consider and accept my Chief Appraiser, Norman Cannady, as their next Tax Assessor,” said Barber. “He has the credentials, education, and experience to maintain the same high standards needed to prepare and defend our important tax rolls that keep our property tax one of the lowest in the state. I have always believed mentoring someone who can take your place should be one of the important goals of any leader.”
Barber has served as the Tax Assessor of Madison County for 28 years. Looking back on seven terms in office, he said, “I've met all the goals and objectives I set out to accomplish in this office. Now it's time to move on to another chapter of adventures, which will not include sitting on the porch any time soon.”

Madison County has experienced three decades of dramatic change and growth during Barber’s time in office. "When I first took office we were in a leaky old basement with one computer. Now we have a computer system and website that are considered the most efficient and user friendly in the state,” Barber said. “We have two practical and modern office buildings, and a professional staff that I am extremely proud of. When I entered this office in 1988 the tax roll was $179 million. The 2014 tax roll was over $1.4 billion.” Barber has worked with seven Chancery Clerks, four Circuit Clerks, three Sheriffs, three Tax Collectors, and 17 County Supervisors.

During his tenure, Barber has served as President and Legislative Chairman of MACA (Mississippi Assessor and Collectors Association), President of the Mississippi IAAO (International Association of Assessing Officials), Chairman of the Mississippi Appraisal Board, Vice Chairman of the Metro Transportation Commission, and member of many Mississippi special task forces.

His volunteer service in Conservation and Environmental organizations spans over 40 years. Notably, he was elected as Chairman of the National Wildlife Federation in 1997, the largest conservation organization at the time with over 4.3 million members.

Barber said, “I am very thankful to my family, staff, and supporters, who have always stood behind me. I am also grateful for the opportunity of being a public servant, one of the greatest privileges of any American.”

Rita Martinson, Lee Westbrook, now Gerald Barber...3 great public servants, all strong leaders, leaving office at the same time. They'll certainly be missed.

Its all an evil Tea Party plot.

Resident JJ Harpies will weigh in in 3 ... 2 ... 1

Goodbye Good Riddance. Its about time. Norman Canaday is one of Barbers cronies. He tried once before to put Canaday in office once before but someone had qualified to run against him and he knew Canaday wouldnt win. Now he's bowing out with only a week left to qualify. His true colors finally show.

Cannady never qualified for office. Hawkins did.

Could have been worse. Barber could have pulled an 'Andy Taggert' scam.

Kingfish is correct. Hawkins did qualify but he had an opponent that more than likely would have won had Barber not run and Barber had to run anyway.

The timing is right up there with and deserves the same 'unsportsmanlike conduct' flag that Taggart got for a similar stunt.

The only thing more ridiculous (in the elections arena) is John Howland being 'appointed' to the job of County Supervisor and sliding feet first into the position, totally unqualified. Now he's sitting in the middle seat between Bag Boy and Rudy on a flight to D.C.

7:36am. Glad to see you join the conversation hardy Crunk. You should know you booked our flights. JBC

Rumor has it that Gerald Barber is going to qualify next week and run agains Gerald steen. That will be fun to watch.

Anonymous said...

Why would barber run for steen's spot? Barber has his time in. He wanted to retire with Hawkins qualified 8 to 12 years ago. Why would he want to be supervisor? So he can still show what a tool he is?

I truly hope someone else qualifies to run against Canaday.

Anonymous said...

Nobody wants to run against Cannady. He's too qualified. It'd be a big fat waste of money.

Anonymous said...

Go for it @11:35!

Rumor has it Rudy will put up $100k for a qualified challenger to take on Steen. Just what I heard sitting at Starbucks. He was meeting with some guy in an expensive suit.

Thats total Bull****. Rumors Rumors Rumors. Show us the proof or shut up....

Oh, The Torture said...

Can you imagine sitting in the middle seat between Crosby and Rudy on a three hour flight?

Anonymous said...

You can be your a$$ that Rudy aint ridin coach or business class.

I don't understand why Rudy didn't charter a private plane. He has been doing it for 15 years to go on "business" trips he wants to keep off the radar - and that's no rumor.

I didn't know Rudy stooped so low as to take public air transportation anymore. Guess he is just trying to keep up his look as a common county engineer.

Lowest common denominator. He has to fly with JBC and JBC can't get away with flying charter. Mary tracks their every move. Howland will be in charge of checking luggage and totin' carry ons. He's a redshirt freshman.

Y'all are all wrong. They booked commercial flights BUT ground man at JAN lives in my apt complex told me Warnock chartered a G550 that's taking all of them to DC.
Stewardess' and all.... That Rudy is a baller.

The most influential politician in Madison County for 30 years announces his retirement and all yall want to talk about is pretty boy and his planes. Show some respect people.

If I had respect for Gerald Barber I might show it. He's done nothing to earn it other than be the pompous windbag that he is.

Big news this week out of Madison County is that a new candidate will emerge for Rita's seat and the Madison TP will run somebody against Tyner. Yes, you read that right, Tea Party AGAINST Tyner. See MitchforMississippi.com

This Just In said...

Rita's seat has been vacant for most of a decade. People who have lived in Madison twenty five years would not know Barber if they tripped over him at Kroger. JBC is going to jail. Mary is moving to Natchez. Elvis will lose. D.I. Young is still pissed off, and Madison will have apartments within two years. You read it here first.

Rudy is running for auditor. Mary is really a man. Gerald steen is coming out of the closet before the qualifying deadline. Heath Hall is actually a Democrat. Tim Johnson and Mary are secret lovers. Phil Bryant is obsessed with "Fifty Shadesof Gray". The bulg in Hardy Crunks pants is his 24" c**k. John Howland likes black women and Guy Bowering is a girl. All of these facts and more coming in the next few weeks. Oh and guess what Haley Barbour dreams of ??????????

Rudy landed in DC today Via the space shuttle. What a dude. He truly is a rock star!!!! Hail Rudilicious.....

Anonymous said...

Why did Gerald steen lead the charge to hire mike espy and Rudy? Give you one guess....

Watcher said...

@10:15; Rudy was large and in charge long, long before Steen came on the scene.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
