Preview of The Light of Speed

This post is the start of something new at Jackson Jambalaya. It gives me great pleasure to present to you the preview of "The Light of Speed". This is not a documentary but rather an oral history of Mr. Speed and indirectly, Jackson. Mr. Speed told me over a year ago stories about Jackson such as how the Rez was built and his life when he was in the Air Force. I realized there were some gems in his memories and decided to capture them on video, similar to the WWII Veterans projects.

JJ will present The Light of Speed in a series of webisodes. The video posted below is a preview. JJ will post a webisode each week starting in several weeks. The Light of Speed covers more than a few topics from Mr. Speed's childhood to the building of the Rez to how Jackson can be rescued to race. He also expounded on economic development for the state for over an hour in a lecture that should be required viewing for more than a few politicians in Mississippi. I hope you enjoy the preview. Amile Wilson shot the film. Stacy Putnam of Crave Branding edited the video. We learned quite a few things about what to do and what not to do when producing a video. Our next project (and yes, we are already working on a similar project) will be much better. More than a few hours went into this production and we hope we find it worthy of your praise.

This is outstanding. Can't wait to see the full thing.

Rough editing in spots, but who cares?! This is fascinating, and I can't wait to see the full webisodes.

Excellent ideea, KF. excellent.

Anonymous said...

This might also be good for the radio show.

The only problem I see with this project is how to get it into the hands of enough voters. This will be a great tool to effect real change in our leadership.

Anonymous said...

AWESOME!!! This man does not "miss the mark!" Eager to watch future editions of this!

Anonymous said...

very well done. those that don't learn from history are doomed to repeat it. nice job jj

You've taken it to the next level, Kingfish. Another donation to follow. It is so wonderful that you have committed to giving Jackson a voice. We have a slew of history around here, but few have ever tried to sort it out.

That was GREAT !

Excellent work! Look forward to the finished product.

Well done Fish! Folks I will really enjoyed it when explains how the reservoir came into being.... Now days the competing wacko groups would kill it.
Good job!

This is an excellent piece of work about a well-deserving man. Looking forward to the next one.

A ringing endorsement for Mayor Mary!

Being a new kid on the block (10 years here) I often here people talk about Mr. Speed both good and bad. Thank you for this insight
into the man.

Don't usually do this, but...

Please please please, feel free to copy the link below and paste it to your Facebook, or whatever other place you might feel worthy (email).

It helps to spread the word about our history, finally, something about Jackson that is from the horses mouth!

Thanks KF and Mr. Speed for all the hard work. Oh and you too Amile, et al. ;)

Thank you for introducing me to Mr. Speed in this fabulous snippet. Can't wait for the complete version. Best 13:04 seconds I have spent in a long time!

Only congratulatory remarks allowed.

Anonymous said...

Read between the lines of Speed's comments and you'll quickly realize that Hinds County and Jackson are doomed.

Anonymous said...

4:25 is talking to 4:32 and himself. It was just a matter of time before the irrelevant cynic arrived. For him, he was actually quite mild. Predictable, but mild.

Anonymous said...

I love the reservoir story, and damn what a statement regarding the Queen!

Anonymous said...

Excellent job - Can't wait to see the whole thing!

Anonymous said...

Is that you Ben? Or is it Junior?

Anonymous said...

So, now we learn that Speed is Kingfish's father.

Anonymous said...

Don't overlook the fact that not a single black was 'at the table' during those 'times' Speed is recalling. Now, there's virtually nobody 'at the table' OTHER than blacks. Pretend, if you will, that this makes no difference or is simply another racist statement. But, it is reality. Dooming reality.

Kingfish said...

4:25 is making things up. All comments were approved but the last one. Apparently some of our readers want to carry on their little fight they had on the DOR threads. Not happening on this one.

Speed is sadly one of a dying breed... So many of our communities came of age at a time when visionary business leaders were instrumental in the community. Our society has since, as he discussed, fractured. Now we are left in the hands of bureaucrats like Harvey Johnson, and shiftless issues advocates like Chokwe Lumumba.

The issue is, though, that just because the hometown corporations are gone, it doesn't mean that business leaders have to remove themselves from the task of governing and directing a community. We just need a way to direct the energy- like a 21st Century Rotary Club.

Anonymous said...

Now we are left in the hands of bureaucrats, shiftless issues advocates and police officer impersonators.

Mr. Speed is a brilliant man who has done much for our community.
He's absolutely right that establishing and protecting a residential tax base from encroachment is key as was the basis of Mayor Hawkin's plan. When she thought about running for mayor, I encouraged her to go to Roswell , GA, and see how a bedroom community not unlike Madison was developing. She did and was very excited by what she saw.
A positive vision of what a community and state and nation needs to look like and the elements it needs to prosper AND to be a good place to live is indeed lacking.
Mr. Speed has not given up on moving Jackson and Mississippi towards a brighter future. I admire his fortitude given the obstacles he often has to face.
And, he is absolutely right about competitive bidding!

8:51: you are right. Take Mayo Flint. Sharp guy, a leader, but in the end, a flunkie for a company can that can ignore him all day long if it chooses to do so. One reason I get so disappointed when local business owners sell out.

Anonymous said...

Very true, KF. We are nothing more than numbers on a balance sheet to companies headquartered outside the state. Even the local bigwigs in those companies are small fish (and a few of them even realize it).

Don't get me wrong - I welcome the jobs that come when out-of-state businesses open locations here. But don't fool yourselves, either. When it's time to cut jobs, they sure won't cut the ones close to their homes. And they'll never have a real interest in or take ownership of problems in our communities.

There are probably some homegrown companies in the state that have the same mentality as the out-of-state companies. However, I know several heads of homegrown companies that are still located here and I can assure you that they view Mississippians as more than numbers on their balance sheets.

Support local businesses or support out-of-state businesses. Everyone is free to do what they please. But don't complain about local businesses selling out if you aren't supporting them, and don't complain about out-of-state companies not caring about your community. That's not too much to ask, is it?

Anonymous said...

10:20, many times local businesses aren't selling out due to a lack of local support but often it is because the longtime owners want to cash out and lock in their hard fought gains.

Anonymous said...

Do you think his family acquired the property along the banks of the Pearl during the building of the Reservoir?

Anonymous said...

Gee Fish, your robot preventer is tough. The Lelans Speed project is terrific. I remeber when he bought First NBC's (NOLA)REIT in maybe 1975 and turned it into his group. Remarkable. We have guys like Leland, the Creekmores, John Palmer, both Billy Moungers,Wyatt Emmerich,Jim Barksdale, the Lamptons, the Millers and a number of others who really know stuff.I sure wish They could have some real influence in Jackson proper to cure that advanced ill patient.Anyway your project is a great idea. Will make first donation tout suite.

Anonymous said...

12:22 I am sure it is very difficult for a person like you to understand, but sometimes successful people actually do something for the greater good, with no expectations of a real monetary return. Can you say Parham Bridges Park(s) for example. LRS received no benefits from muscling the King Edward project through, and was paid $1/year as MDA head. What REALLY is your issue. Is it personal, or are you bitter with your diminished stature in life?

Anonymous said...

Wasn't Mr. Wonderful Speed the same person who wanted to get the eminent domain referendum overturned. You know, the one that the people voted on.

Anonymous said...

Yeah 1:38, as did Haley and a shitload of business people. He was right. If every thing was a vote, blacks would still, in Mississippi, be at the back of the bus, which is something I am sure you would support.

Anonymous said...

1:37 do you know 12:22 or are you worried about the black helicopter circling overhead?

Anonymous said...

Seems to me 12:22 is the wacko, 1:49. 1:37 is right on target.

Anonymous said...

It is to bad that we can't elect a leader like Mr. Speed to save this city. The best we can do is send ignorant goof-balls to city hall that are only there to line their pockets with our tax $$$'s. This "only elect black's" rule in Hinds County has destroyed Jackson.

Anonymous said...

The most impressive/historically significant thing he said was "didn't go to Ole Miss."

Anonymous said...

Why is it that a comment cannot be accepted that is the least bit critical of Speed, without four or five people straddling the throat of the commenter? Does everybody have to agree on sainthood for Speed in order for a blog thread to progress?

Anonymous said...

Why would ANYONE be critical of MR. Speed, Sparky. The only ones critical of him are those that don't KNOW him, and are jealous of the GIANT he is.

Sparky said...

I see, maidservant.

Anonymous said...

If you look at KF's throwdown at the levee board, you wil find the reference to the Speed Family land!

Anonymous said...

Not even worth a comment.

Anonymous said...

Not even worth a comment.

Then why did you?

I See A Parallel said...

Why is it not appropriate to bring up the fact that the Speed family (apparently) has land holdings, the value of which might skyrocket, if certain things happen? Why not have that on the table? Why is it that certain (repetitive) posters here will support him no matter what and will ridicule any legitimate question or suggestion that something smells and that there could possibly, if remotely, be a conflict?

This is exactly the attitude we get from 'the black community' when someone ridicules or even questions Stokes or Graham. They can do no wrong and get a pass. The only difference is Graham and Stokes are counting jars full of pennies and Speed is counting wrapped bundles of greenbacks.

KaptKangaroo said...

Unfortunately your parallel falls apart when you consider the facts Mr. Speed earned and invested his own money, the public servants you reference are feasting and enriching themselves using the publics money while handing it out to themselves.

Kingfish said...

Tell the whole truth. One has to own land IN THE DISTRICT to sit on the levee board. Mr. Speed donated his land that was next to the proposed lake to Mississippi College.

bill said...

I See, are you saying there's a conflict of interest when an influential person with a history of working for the betterment of the city and the region proposes a move that otherwise makes sense but might also help bring business to his nephew? Does that mean that the DOR can't move anywhere within a five mile radius of an empty office space that Jeff Speed has listed? That's the kind of attitude that has kept successful businessmen out of public service. They're not going to get involved if their extended family is going to be punished for it. It's a conflict of interest if Leland secretly owns the Landmark building. His nephew finding some renters as a result of a move that makes sense anyway isn't a conflict of interest.

8:02. You can't win against shit for brains like 6:00 AM. He lives in the Shadowfart world of smallness. He despises the good in the world. He makes his mission in life trying to upset people for his amusement. He is a little bug that desparatly wants attention, but none pays attention to,as far back as he can remember. A sad lil phuck.

Anonymous said...

8:38
Sounds like not only did he get your attention, he upset the heck out of you. What a sad little prick you are.

Kingfish said...

Shadowfax, I addressed your comment in my own comment. You clearly did not read it, hence I did not approve your comment. Since you still lack reading comprehension, I will suggest that you go check out some adult reading programs. There are several good ones in the area.

Jesus, people, you'd think we were talking about Edwin Edwards. No wonder successful people don't want t expose themselves and their families to the jealous scrutiny of small minded fools.

There is no whore lower than a journalist who sells himself to the highest bidder. Since Kingfish finds relevance primarily in his own mind, it's chuckle-worthy. If it were a matter of some import, it would not be.

"For The People"..........

Anonymous said...

You've had plenty of time in the past three weeks to correct "he was in the Air Force over a year ago".

Anonymous said...

We've told you before @12:43 to stop picking your nose in public.

noel said...

Nice work! It makes me sad that we can't get stuff done anymore. Regulations, special interests, politics and graft would stop a project like the Rez in short order.

Anonymous said...

Those paying for these repetitive ads are not the only ones with valid opinions. There's is only one. Others are out there. This one is, however, as Noel says, chock full of special interests and politics. Unsure about graft but doubt it.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
