Election day open thread

Consider this the election day open thread. No pimping for candidates. Just want to hear what is going on out there in the field without being Tony Geiger. Enjoy and good luck to all the candidates and their workers.

Flowood library (Holbrook box) was packed this morning. Hard to find a parking spot.... not a good spot, but a parking spot period. I blame this on good turn out and the masses of campaigners standing 151 feet from the building.

Madison County: Lake Cavalier.
Voting machines are broken and they only had a few paper ballots. We vote two days a year and we can't have things ready.

Crossgates Baptist Church in Brandon - so many supporters with signs, and I think they were closing in on 150 feet. You could barely turn into the parking lot at the church because of their proximity. I thought they were supposed to be limited to across the street, but were right at the entrance on the church side.

Voting places around Ridgeland were a little busy this morning, light to moderate since then.

went to Baptist Church on Yandell Road near Deerfield in Madison County around 10:15. Based on the number I was in the sign-in book, the turnout has apparently been very solid, but not overwhelming yet. Things were running smoothly with the process.

Vineyard on Lakeland was a breeze. I think the new law is helping with keeping a bunch of machines open.

But I have one gripe: we need an open primary system. The founders would be rolling in their graves if they knew elections had been hijacked by factions that control what candidates make it to the general elections (Dems and Repubs). Until we have open primaries we're not going to get and hold onto any statesmen in office.

Clinton has idiots working the polls. The ladies could not hear and were taking almost 5 minutes to look names up.

Put out signs early morning in
NE Jackson precincts---tripped
over T. Lewis signs there were
so many

At my precinct in Madison County, I questioned why there was no privacy. You go into one small room and sign in as D or R and receive the computer chip card. Then go out into the hallway and there are four machines lines against the wall. The entire line of voters as well as the four attendants in the area can watch you vote and see your entire ballot screen. I was told, "It's always been this way." I replied, "I've voted here for years and there has never been a time when another person could view your selections.

Only real complaint is that the teenaged girls at the intersections in Madison wore shorts that were entirely too short. This fact, plus the signs could cause wrecks and assorted other traffic issues.

Anonymous said...

are you saying teenage girls in short shorts cause car wrecks? hmmm

Anonymous said...

Thank God this b*llshit is almost over. Never been so tired of something in my entire life.

Anonymous said...

Shadowfax, could you give me the street names on the intersection that you are talking about? I might want to go view the teenage girls in short shorts.

Large republican turnout in NE Jackson.

750+ voted GOP at the Flowood Library. No lines. Took 3 minutes - took longer to park/walk in.

11:38 must be staurt irby

11:47 - That worries me. That means people a lot of Mac's voters are not pulling levers for him.

Buckle up guys, because this could be bad.

Anonymous said...

11:03 - could you tell me whether that was a Democrat table or a Republican table that you are complaining about the workers. Thanks

Boarzombie said...

With an open primary system, Mac wouldn't have to sweat it. I'm just sayin' (again).

Trace Ridge Baptist Church in Ridgeland -- way too many folks with signs.

Someone needs to check on that.

Short-shorted teenaged girls out in full force at Northshore fire station. Apparently, this is a new tactic.

But I won't begrudge a girl trying to keep cool while it's 532 degrees outside, and I'm a 30-something mom of two girls. Now, if they were pole dancing while holding political signs we'd have a problem. But politicking while cute? Comes with the territory of being a Southern belle.

Very happy today is finaly here. I can now reclaim my home from from live surveys, automated surveys and all those " I am calling for calls. Free At Last!!!!!

McMillin could have run as an independent and saved his army of supporters from the quandry.

Voted for Sandridge for Mad. Co. Sheriff, if for no other reason, his TV Ad tells it like it is....

NE Jxn - Casey School

Voted at noon. Number 188 on the Republican side. No lines, no waiting. Voted in 30 seconds. Very easy. Did not look at the Democrat book, but would guess it has been a slow day.

Anonymous said...

11:56--It was Democrat. The Republican table was running smoothly, not that there was anyone voting that side. and this was at Wildwood Baptist.

Anonymous said...

Hinds precinct 33 (Casey School, very Republican) at 11:40: I was #47 on the Dem side; guy who walked out with me had been #174 on the GOP side. Less than 4:1 GOP to Dem. Still some cross-over. Maybe not enough.

Anonymous said...

Has anyone ever been persuaded to vote for a candidate because a person was waving a sign in front of the precinct?

Anonymous said...

Looks like Hillcrest is going to have to hire a yard man.

Anonymous said...

The tables in NE jxn are set up to drive voters to R

Every four years there is a concern about McMillin. In 2007 - don't vote for Bryant/Ross or McMillin will lose. In 2003 - don't vote for treasurer or auditor in GOP Primary or McMillin will lose. In 1999 - don't vote for Parker/Briggs/etc or Hawks/Brown in GOP Gov / Lt Gov or McMillin will lose. I'm not saying they were wrong then and I'm not saying they are wrong now. Some Republicans will vote in Dem Primary for him, some won't. I'd be intersted to see if that number changes much as a portion of voters.

1:35 Thanks for the info. Helpful. Glad to hear that it was the Dems and not the Repubs.

voted at bapt. chrch on highland colony 9:30am, i was 202 repub, looke like VERY few dems. 10 machines set up but still a line.

Stunning number of Louvier signs, big & small, at the Jackson Ave. polling place in Ridgeland. A Madison friend reported the same at her precinct. How much money *is* there in being a J.P.?

Then a Brad Harbour truck almost backed into me on the way out. Good for him I'd voted already. ;)

Now, if they were pole dancing while holding political signs we'd have a problem.

I'd have to study that tactic a while before pronouncing on its propriety.

The uxorial unit voted at Casey School at 2:21. She was #68 on the D side. The R's had 262. 20.6% Dem.

Holbrook box at the Flowood library, voted 700 by 1:00; heavy Harkins & Yancey

For comparative purposes the final tally at your box for the 2007 primaries was ~43% Donkey. In the 2003 primaries is was ~57% Donkeycrat.

If the numbers hold and if your box is indicative of NE Jackson as a whole then it looks to be quite a large shift.

Best quote of the day found in Clarion Liar online version: "We're Democrats, but we didn't want everyone in the room to know we're Democrats."

Light turnout at my polling place on Millsaps Avenue in the now-defunct Millsaps Arts District. Fewer than 80 Democratic voters by 2:00 p.m. I voted in the Democratic primary to support Mac and Barbara Dunn, and to vote against Kenneth Stokes for supervisor. If the race between Reeves and Hewes weren't so tight, I think a lot more of my Republican friends would have joined me. Mac has gotten by in the past, but the stakes this time are just too high.

Good question re 'has anybody ever been pursuaded by a political sign at the polling place'. Would seem to me if a citizen is so inclined as to drive up into a polling place in the midst of all that madness, he/she already has a fair idea of the intended vote. Today I felt sorta like a highway patrolman or deputy when everybody on the road waves at you and you don't want to wave at a single one of those turds. There's got to be some psychology at play when people smile and wave at you and couldn't give a rats ass if you crash your car or your tires all four go flat at one time. LOL.

I dunno. You're surely there to vote for SOMEONE, but there may be many races you don't know or care about, and you may punch "Louvier" or "Steen" just because, damn, that was all you could see driving in to the polls.

Anonymous said...

I had a guy ask me why I didn't bring my ID to the polls ... I said "becuase its not required" Apparently he thought we had voter ID.

Okay /// Went to the Morris Library /// Precinct 34A&B /// One of the most reliably GOP precincts in all of Hinds /// In 2007 the primary vote was 38% Democrat /// Today, at 5 PM, the vote was 21% Democrat /// Matches the Precinct 33 numbers mentioned above pretty damn close ///

I voted at Woodland Hills old gym this morning. 3 young white boys at Republican check in and 16 African American women at the Democrat reception desk. Things went smoothly but I thought it seemed kinda oddly divided looking

Anonymous said...

Bet those three young white boys did as good a job as those 16 AA women. If you check throughout the county, there are way too many people manning the Dem table. Went to Chastain this morning - there were 6 Dems manning the table - and 50 votes by 1 this afternoon. Three would be plenty enough.

Same thing in several other precincts - majority Repub precincts with 3 or 4 workers but the Dems have 6 or 7. And the Repubs have no problems with their smaller numbers.

Guess this is a good jobs program for the Dems in the county, I guess.

Last year, after they had already located my name and pointed to it on the book, the woman asked me for my address. I thought that was a form of voter ID and refused to state my address, but said, yes, that's me, right there. They would not let me vote without stating my address and full name. Maybe Egbert needs to tell me just what 'voter ID' means.

I voted this afternoon at 5:52 at the Penny Coastal Church in Madison. I was number 440 on the Republican roll.

What denomination is that "Penny Coastal" church?

I voted at 3:00 this afternoon in Annandale and was number 288 on the Republican side.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
