Complaint filed against soccer coach in youth tourney

The coach of a local girl's select soccer team allegedly has problems keeping his hands and temper in check. He coached the Brilla Jrs. (U12 Girls) at the State Cup tournament for select soccer two weekends ago. The tournament was held in Clinton. The winning goal was scored against his team just before the end of the game (2-1). Mr. Dixon set a fine example for the children as he ran onto the field when the game ended, got into the face of the female referee, screamed at her, and proceeded to yell at her and call her names. Did I mention she is over fifty? I'm told she repeatedly told him to back up (standard procedure for such confrontations) but he ignored her commands. She then turned to leave when he grabbed her arm and held her in place. In soccer terms, this is called referee assault and is a HUGE no-no. He was ejected and the referees then left the field. Under the rules, Mr. Dixon should receive a one-year suspension. Complaints were filed with the state association, but it is unknown what punishment the soccer league will levy against the alleged hothead. Mr. Dixon used to be the Head Coach of the Women's Soccer team at Belhaven University.

This is the same coach who also coaches the adult Brilla PDL team. The website of the Brilla Jrs team shows Dave Dixon to be the Director of Coaching for that youth select soccer organization. Now I ask you: What kind of example is this to the 11 and 12 year old girls? Even if the guy strongly disagreed with whatever went on during the game, there are more appropriate ways to handle such disagreements. Did I mention Brilla is a Christian ministry?

The Brilla organization should lead by example and dismiss Mr. Dixon if he is found to have assaulted the referee. Such behavior has no place in an organization claiming to be a Christian ministry (or anywhere else). I know. He's a great guy. He just gets carried away. You just have to know him. The referee has a vendetta against him. Blah blah blah. I don't care. According to the complaint filed at the tournament, he assaulted the referee. The organizations involved should investigate and back up their referees if their allegations are indeed true (and according to my sources, they are). One hopes the organization will treat him the same as everyone else under the rules. If we are going to have zero tolerance in schools for five year olds who draw guns in art class then we should have zero tolerance for coaches who assault referees.

He grabbed a woman's arm? Good grief, it's youth sports. Brilla is supposed to promote good works and sportsmanship. I think they should take a long look at this guy.

I've heard enough. I was going to take my 10-year-old son to some Brilla games this summer but forget it if this guy is the coach.

Don't forget the atheist's prayer: "Dear God, please save me from your most devoted followers" ;-)

Spreading the good news with soccer as a platform? Just as Jesus, Peter, and Paul did it, kicking their soccer balls as they preached it.
As in most organized religion today, conform their "ministry" to entertainment and what the people want, not to God's requirements -- 2 Timothy 4:3 puts it best

I know some of the older Brilla Jrs' teams go on mission trips and the organization goes out into smaller towns and does have a great ministry to youth, by bringing them together doing what interests them. However, having a Director of Coaching who would do this, taints it all.

Get rid of the goon.

No more Brilla games for me!

Brilla’s purpose is to share the good news of Jesus Christ through the game of soccer. Whether in a foreign country, playing in the states, or in a camp setting, our goal remains the same – to shine for Jesus. Brilla is the Spanish word for “shine,” which reminds us that Jesus said, “Let your light shine before men.” (Matthew 5:16)

The only thing this guy shined was his ass.

I don't know who Kingfish is but I am appalled at this blog..and I find it humorous that you are smearing a good man's name and not even signing yours. Your "sources" were wrong. I was at the game and it was in no way assault! The referee made a terrible call and refused to admit that she made a mistake. But the thing that upsets me most about this blog are the 6-8 people who so quickly passed judgment on him and the organization of Brilla based on "Kingfish"...really? Brilla is doing some amazing things and are reaching a lot of people. They are doing inner city camps that no church will do. So...Kingsfish and all of you who fell so quickly at his feet...let me be the one to remind you of some very powerful words that I have to remind myself of every day. Jesus says in John 8:7 "If any of you is without sin, let him be the first to throw a stone." So unless you have never "messed up"...then I suggest you quit throwing stones at people who have. And for the few of you who have read this and are boycotting Brilla because of this man's opinion...I would encourage you to bring your family to a game, meet coach Dave Dixon and the Brilla players, and make a grown up decision for yourself!

Thank you for your comment, Shoegirl.

Rebekah said...

Well, thanking me for a comment I haven't made yet is a little premature...but anyway.....
This is disgusting. "Messing up" is NOT getting into a woman's face and grabbing her arm. It is a GAME...A game for children! If he acts like this over a silly game, imagine how he would react over something major! The "man" (and I use that term lightly) needs to get a good grip on life and reality. Put your big boy panties on and GROW UP Dixon.

Autogyro said...

Anon @3:23, I think I'll decline your invitation to "meet coach Dave Dixon." And FYI, grabbing falls under the list of actions that constitute referee assault.

Kingfish said...

All three refs filed reports stating he grabbed her arm and was screaming at said ref. Doesn't matter if she blew the call or not.

Kingfish said...

By the way, anon above never denies he screamed, cursed, and grabbed her arm.

Leave KF alone 3:23. I know who he is- he is a person of integrity who wouldn't just throw a allegation up here without some serious investigation. Sorry!

Rebekah said...

Oh wait 3:23!!! The ref made a bad call! Well, then it's her fault right? She should apologize to Dixon for making him act like a 3 year old. It's her fault! Not his! He has no problem with anger until someone calls a wrong play! Gotch! Thanks for clearing that up for us. We just assumed the guy was an obvious douchebag with an anger issue. But, after reading your post, now we know he's just a douchbag who doesn't have a problem with anger until someone ticks him off. Thanks for clearing that up for us! I'd love to see him try and treat a man coach llike that!

your highness said...

an allegation....sorry did not proofread. :)

Don't know anything about this guy or the incident, but my child has attended Brilla camps, and they've all been great experiences. All the youth instructors I've met through Brilla have been kind, encouraging and well behaved. And, as someone with a big ecumenical streak, I haven't experienced any overbearing "witnessing" from them either, for which I'm eternally thankful.

KaptKangaroo said...

If what was alleged by the refs is true, this guy is in those immortal words of Shoegirl, a "douche bag." As for Brilla, it sounds like they are a good group. The refs seem to know how to do the right thing when something wrong occurs. The "douche bag" is providing fodder. For all the Brilla defenders, aim your silver tongue at the "douche"; this blog is attempting, in my eyes, to give you a forum to provide support in dealing with these serious allegations.

BTW, gotta love saying the word, "douche."

Rebekah said...

Hopefully they'll suspend him or get rid of him. There should be no tolerance for behavior like that. No excuse.

Rebekah said...

It's my favorite word. But, there's no excuse for such outlandish behavior. Coaches are supposed to be role models. I wouldn't want my daughter seeing behavior like that and thinking it's ok...that it's allowed. He is wrong here- not the organization.

This website does a good job of getting important information out when others refuse to report. And it investigates and must get good tips. So hats off to you.

On the other hand, the website occasionally post something like this. An angry soccer coach? The guy made a mistake. Will/could/should lose his job. Probably will apologize - to the ref and his team. Maybe there are other issues in his life causing him stress. Nothing makes his behavior excusable. But I understand. We all have bad days, weeks, months and years. We make serious errors in our judgment. But we ask forgiveness, hope people forgive, and move on.

It seems this blog likes to crucify. Anybody. Do the Evans deserve it? Yes. Did Pickering deserve it with his soccer melee and divorce? Probably yes. Does this guy deserve this attention? My answer is no. You had 77,000 hits last month. Assuming 10,000 were unique, you can ruin people. I think you are not being responsible here, KF. None of us are in better or more informed because of this. You are hurting an organization with an overall noble goal (I'm not involved, my children are not old enough) and a man that hasn't held himself out to be a public figure. If anything, he has held himself out to be a role model to his players. Their parents know about this. If you feel the need to tell the rest of the league about this guy's involvement with the program, Brilla's website has participating churches. Call the pastors. But publicizing this incident on this forum isn't bettering anyone.

I'm not going to stop reading the blog. I like it. I wish you would be more considerate, or discerning, about what you think is important news.

So exactly what are the 'amazing' things that Brilla does? What does soccer and God's Kingdom have in common? Let's see some scriptural support here--

KaptKangaroo said...

Bullcrap 4:40 PM. I would think this is serious enough that a concerned party brought it to the attention of this blog. Not sure, but that's my guess. Not to metion, this site has highlighted the absurd behavior of parents at "public" games, remember that little Madison incident with an ex-Representative?

Get off your high horse. IF he didn't want criticism he should not act this way in public while serving the public, albeit in a Christian way...

And, to conclude, tell him to get his butt here and tell us his side. We have the other side. We are a fair and impartial audience when both sides are presented. However, it has been my experience here, when the other side does show up - they wind up shutting up because they can't put up.

brilla is about soccer? dam, I thought was a thing to clean a frying pan with.

Kingfish said...

by the way, this post is NOT a knock on Brilla. If they ignore the reports and do nothing and by that I mean don't even investigate but let the reports/complaints gather dust, then they deserve to catch some grief, until then, they are just another organization that might have a problem. I'm willing to wait to see how they deal with it before calling them out. obviously they've done much good in the Jackson area. I've also posted other soccer incidents before here, including the episode where Durr was attacked.

4:40, I agree with you. If someone is not a public figure, I think much thought should be given before hammering someone, regardless of the evidence. If someone is a pubilc figure, then go for it.
The same post could have been done without his name or picture, and could have just discussed the organization.

How about some fact checking? The blog says "He was ejected and the referees then left the field."

Dixon was not "ejected" (nor was he sent off)

"Under the rules, Mr. Dixon should receive a one-year suspension."

Wrong again, better read the USSF automatic penalties on the US Soccer website

Complaints were filed with the state association, but it is unknown what punishment the soccer league will levy against the alleged hothead."

How about the automatic penalties that are set by the USSF? Those things are generally settled within hours of the incident.

No man or woman is perfect. If we were we would not need a savior. I personally know Dave as a coach and friend. I do not know the details, but I do know that if Dave did something wrong he will ask for forgivness and deal with consequences from his mistake.

Most of us hear are ashamed of some things we have done in our lives. This points back to the need of a Savior in Christ for both Christians and non-christians. We are all in need of forgiveness.

I do believe that Christian leaders should be held to higher standard. This does not mean that we should expect perfection as we are all fallen men. I hope that through this, Dave becomes a better man, that Brilla becomes a better organization, and that all of us would be less judgemental to others. Jesus did not preach perfection in humans, He preached forgiveness and new way in Him.

Your attempt to create a victim mentality regarding discussion on this post is a faint whisper. I only see the original Blog Post accusing any man of what you allege in the comments. So, if you want to put up, bring it. I do this in the spirit of debate, not your victim, victim, victim simplicity of accusing others of discussion that is not occurring.

KaptKangaroo said...

I will say this, if you folks want to have forgiveness preached at Church for a man that grabs a woman in public; you best be ready to house every assault victim, domestic or otherwise while they walk the streets. The fools sound like they want their cake and they want to eat it too.

KaptKangaroo said...

6:49 PM So, do you have the complaints filed by the referees?

KaptKangaroo said...

And, if we really want to talk about it, Shoegirl is in her right place to share with us the disgust as the general public should. I mean, I'm just sitting here playing solitaire and figuring out that I'm one card short of a full deck.

Consider my support, not that is worth anything more than flowers on the wall, for Shoegirl. I just wish she'd get off my heels...

KK, you are correct. Churches should be in the business of having open doors to all. Churches aren't perfect either and are in need of forgiveness.

what the hell does this soccer game have to do with the church? my favorite comment is the one about how the ref blew a call. big deal. 1, its soccer. 2, it's youth soccer. let the kids play and teach them that shit happens in life that you have no control over and you have to just get over it. had they been winning 3-1 that last goal wouldn't have mattered anyway. maybe the lesson to be learned is don't suck in the first place.

Anonymous said...

we haven't heard his side yet. what if she provoked him by calling him a bad coach? or worse, attacked his manhood. he may have had no choice

KaptKangaroo said...

Ahhh....what if Karen blamed him for pulling her hair? Wait, I'm sounding like pumpchick....again with the "what ifs."

Geez, lets get back to the subject, this guy allegedly can't control his physical nature. Let me ask all you supporters, if I just decided to grab you; would you ask me to pray? And, forgive me? And, not prosecute me?

Anonymous said...

This happened two weekends ago. That is more than sufficient time for him to apologize to his players for setting such a poor example for them to emulate, or for Brilla to can him for not doing the right thing for the kids who see him as a role model. Neither one has acted in a very, ahem, 'Christian' manner in these ten days or so. I thought you had to repent before seeking forgiveness......

Anonymous said...

9:44...oh lawdy...so if a woman verbally "attacks" his manhood or called him a bad coach (what-if's, yeah yeah yeah) he has the right to just snatch her up and manhandle her? Oh, myohmy, gotta love your justifications...NOT. If anything, it makes him a pooosy for not just walking away.

""Under the rules, Mr. Dixon should receive a one-year suspension."

Wrong again, better read the USSF automatic penalties on the US Soccer website ""

You are wrong see:
Penalties shall be as follows:

Assault: The player, coach, manager, or official committing the referee assault is automatically suspended for at least one (1) year from the time of the assault, unless serious injuries are inflicted, then the minimum suspension will be at least five (5) years. The National State Association or Professional League adjudicating the matter may not provide shorter periods of suspension but, if circumstances warrant, may provide a longer period of suspension.

Anonymous said...

So did he NOT get a one-year suspension? I'm sure others suffering the same penalties in the future will have a field day is this guy gets off!

Anonymous said...

Still have heard of no actions taken against the guy.

BTW Brilla is holding tryouts starting next week for their youth select program........ Coach Dixon should be around, as he is the Director of Coaching. Go meet the guy!

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
