Seeing some of these bills makes you wish they spent MORE time at dinners and receptions and LESS time doing what the rest of us would recognize as work.

Some of these looks pretty good though...if a photographer sees photos of kids that are lewd that should be reported. I know there will probably be some idiot who gets worked up over a bathtub photo, but child porn is a worse problem than one would like to consider.
The CLE one is bad though. I guess we should be glad they didn't exempt the AG as well.

Helmets and driver's license for ATV drivers. It's about freakin' time.

Too many sweet little lives have been lost had this bill been made law years ago.

Rep. Denny should have submitted the judgment bill when HIS OWN SON was under a judgment. I guess he waited until he was well past the 7 year limit.

I wish they would just go ahead and outlaw the WHEEL. Our state house is full of idiots, just like all the other state houses.

I can see the divorce attorneys absolutely abusing this to gain an upper hand. It basically allows for the criminalization of two grown adults arguing and those proceedings then to be transcribed for use in civil proceedings. This is not well thought out and in the end isn't really going to address true domestic violence. This blog has done more than the state has ever done for highlighting the true issue of Domestic Violence as evidenced by the George/Robbie Bell situation.

don't know why they want to increase penalties on immigration when they don't enforce the ones they have. Largest raid ever in Ms at Howards and the state still does business with them. Guess it depends how much in campaign contributions you give to certain elected officials. Mcdaniel rants about immigration problems but is silent whenever it happens from supporters in his district.

On the out-of-state pharmacy bill. I believe this gives the MS Board of Pharmacy an opportunity to inspect these out-of-state facilities, just as they do the local pharmacies in MS. Is that really a bad thing? I don't think so.

Who would pay for out-of-state pharmacy inspections? MS taxpayers, I suppose?

10:53 - Which Denny are we looking for here? There's a dozen or more.

Just b/c it's a law, doesn't mean it will be abided by. Look at the seatbelt/childseat laws. How many times have you seen someone not wearing a seatbelt and their kids not buckled up?

Why can't people just be responsible for themselves without .gov intrusion? Why does everyone always turn to passing new laws?

Because Stephen, then we would have no need for government and then we would have to feed, clothe, and house those morons that cannot do anything other than draw a government check.

Catch 22.

Denny Development is the son.

Oops - The son DOES have a current one - a biggie.

How do you intimidate a police officer? In Mississippi?

Letting children ride atv's without so much as a helmet amounts to negligence. The parent can be held culpable for that, but it doesn't bring a life back. A law to discourage it will, or at least might.

Regardless of what you think or see, child safety seats and seatbelts have saved untold number of lives. I know four people who have been issued tickets for not wearing their's, all within the last two years. One of these folks were issued two tickets for it in the same month. It is enforced, not every time, but it is enforced.

People turn to laws when lives are unnecessarily lost and an enforceable law is needed to drop the chance of it happening. People should have better sense, but unfortunately some don't.

What sort of exact inconvenience is a law like this to an average person, who doesn't have an atv or children? If too many laws encroaching my personal freedom is your problem, take a look at losing your right to intimidate a law officer, or taking away your right to wait 3 days for a marriage license, amid scores of others. Redirect your angst where it really belongs. Why the snarky attitude at a law that may help protect a child from death or injury?

Don't begrudge a child a chance to be safe. These kids didn't have that opportunity:

Also passed in Senate:

#2623(believe this is the right #) Make animal abuse a FELONY in Mississippi!!!!
Passed yesterday!!! Yaahhh!

Oh please. I know all about the dangers of ATV accidents. I've lost two ADULT friends on ATV's. and you know what? It's their choice whether or not to ride an ATV with or without a helmet. I would say it's my choice to ride my motorcycle with or without a helmet, but you've already spoken for me and I have to ride with a helmet, and I can't ride down the street without putting my seatbelt on.

If it's such a grand idea, then you wouldn't need a law to do it. And you're very own "4 friends got tickets" shows you the problem. They aren't going to wear their seatbelts. It doesn't matter what the law says. Just like meth is illegal and sudafed is behind the counter. Well the Guvner says if it goes to a prescription we'll have no more meth problems! hooray! Because nobody abuses xanax, oxycontin, or every other prescription drug. Hell if that's his solution, the give people a prescription for pot.

6:11, if you are an adult, you can do whatever the hell you want to as far as I care, whether it's against the law or not. Children shouldn't suffer and die because their parents are too damn stupid or sorry to make sure they are not put in danger on an atv.

If you feel that strongly, start a campaign to overturn these unnecessary laws that you feel are inhibiting your freedom.

6:11 Your abysmal ignorance shows you know nothing about taking care of people who SURVIVE traumatic brain injuries (TBIs). That is what we are trying to prevent with these laws. People who are paralyzed, or comatose/ in a persistent vegetative state, run up rehab and nursing home bills that can cost the TAXPAYERS a quarter million a year or so for unpredictable years/ decades. The TAXPAYERS who voted for these laws don't want to run the risk of paying these bills so you can brag about the feel of wind blowing through your hair while you ride; believe or not, it's not worth it to us. If the fools who ride without helmets die and leave children behind, the kids get Social Security until adulthood, paid for by, you guessed it, working TAXPAYERS. If it was just a matter of a fool dying at his own expense with no possibility of residual expenses for TAXPAYERS then no one would care what you do.

"State law currently bars renewal of judgements."

Not so, under the current language of MS 15-1-43 a judgment may be extended so long as it is "renewed" within 7 years. Although the current enactment of 15-1-43 doesn't use the word "renew" which obviously made it too complicated for legislators.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
