Governor's Veto Forthcoming and Rightly So!

Much to the dismay of fiscal conservatives, SB 2688, passed the Senate by a vote of 26-22. I was one of the 22. This bill restored $67 million to the $458 million of budget cuts that the Governor has been forced to make because of the economic downturn. Gov. Barbour has vowed to veto the bill and I intend to sustain his veto. He needs one third of the Senate (18 of 52 senators). The veto will be sustained and we will start over. As of now, we are $458 million short for 2010, and anticipate deficits of $795 million for 2011, and $1.3 billion for 2012. Next year, when the stimulus runs out, we will have a much worse budgetary crisis. Education proponents are screaming for restorations from the 8.7% cut from this year but don't seem to realize that every dollar dedicated to FY2010 (which ends June 30) comes directly out of their FY2011 appropriation. If we do not carefully use our reserves (Healthcare Trust Fund and Rainy Day Fund), then there will be an even worse cut next year.

I cannot control or predict what any legislator will do, but I believe the Governor when he says he will veto this bill. I voted to send the bill to conference in the hopes that the House and Senate could continue to work on the bill. That was the only hope for any additional restoration to the 2010 budget, in my estimation. The political argument for education was to side with the House position but the practical argument for education was to send the bill to conference.

District 20, Madison and Rankin County

Ah, the whims of politicians; Lee since when has practical thinking really gone on in government?

Mr. Fish, why do you keep giving this guy a platform? While his post in this case is innoquous enough, quite honestly, I've seen enough in his previous two posts to know what I need to know about him.

I want to thank him for his post. I offered him a platform because he is a legislator and like hearing what he has to say. I'd rather get a few posts from legislators than a reporter or columnist telling me what one said. I knew when he started posting some wouldn't like what he had to say but that is politics. Its all give and take and giving you more access to your legislators is always a good thing.

Sheesh...I want more access to those in power, I don't want access, come on people. This is a democracy, speech is a right, it is necessary, and I for one agree with direct access to the kangaroo's mouth. At least I know he will know how we feel in a safe comfortable environment better known as the "internets". Thank you Lee and I do look forward to hearing more as I am a resident of Rankin County by way of the Outback.

Then don't read his posts numbskull.

meanwhile as these fools preen and prance around the chambers, two things are about to happen:

1. MDOC will begin to turn felons loose before their sentences expire and before they are eligible for legitimate early release; and

2. The assistant district attorneys will be sent home on "furlough" and MANY of them will resign out of necessity to look for private practice jobs [which of course are very hard to find now] as they need their paychecks just like all. So, during the furlough, no prosecutions of violent criminals. And, after the furlough, who knows how many will return to the uncertainty of whether this legislature and governor will appropriate the meager amounts [compared to MDOC and eduction] necessary to keep the criminal courts open.

I guess the Circuit Judges will just have to occupy their time letting the ambulance chasers fill the time with Trial Lawyer cases.

1:41 Thanks for your helpful and practical suggestions of alternatives to improve this situation.

1:41 pm Do you actually read the paper? Or follow the news. I think MSSC ruled Barbour cannot do what you are asserting. Go read. Don't dump unfounded opinions without understanding the entire issue. And personally, if MDOC can attempt to review non-violent offenses and make recommendations to release some of them (read "Reefer Madmen") then I say go ahead. Education is a key foundation of society and your paranoid fear of crime growing any worse than it already is, frankly falls short.

If you fear the folks in jail, worry more about the newly created criminals under the laws being passed as we discuss these issues today. Be careful, you just might wake up and find your entire neighborhood running afoul of the law.

The Mississippi S.Ct. has NOT ruled on prosecutor funds, although the antiquated Const. of 1890 does place the prosecutors in the Judical Branch of government, and their ruling could be extended to cover the prosecutors.

Here is what those idiots could do: make a priority list and fund the essentials. Kinda of like what the prosecutors will have to do if laid off: pay for a roof and food first. Maybe public safety isn't the first priority with our Governor and Legislature. Instead they indulge in endless processes and exchanges and political huffing and puffing. There's no excuse for it. Thanks for the opportunity to vent at 1:41 and again this time.

Congrats to the defenders of the public education status quo. The lack of results in that arena drown out anything your words may attempt to convey here.

To 1:37, the level of discourse (ad hominem attacks, etc.) here befits a bunch of eighth graders. I won't be reading Mr. Yancey's posts any more or anyone else here. There are other blogs available with more intelligent and articulate participants.

But DO keep working at it--you'll make a SUPER guest on Jerry Springer one day.

We won't miss you. You're nothing more than an anonymous nobody.

Good point, 4:25, but it leaves us with a philosophical conundrum here: If a particular anonymous whiner stops whining, how will we know?

Anonymous said...

Actually, I think 1:37 nailed it with a succinct, on-target response. I don't waste time trying to explain to my dog why we're going to the vet, and she's probably smarter than one or two whiners I've read here.

Anonymous said...

10:35 your dog going to the vet has anything to do with what?

4:15 if you know of "more intelligent" banter on another blog, might I indulge you to go there? And stay? Or offer up these so-called other blogs available with more intelligent and articulate participants so that us inarticulate boobs might evaluate your reading material right here in front of your eyes? Chicken? I dare you to put up the JFP.

And back to 1:41 thanks for the clarification you made on your original post. It is much clearer what you doth protest. I still think education is fundamental. Prosecuting violent crime is fundamental. Prosecuting property crimes is fundamental. Creating new laws that are excuses for "doing their jobs" is inexcusable. We should just stick with what we have currently on the law books, keep the legislature working on budget/appropriations only, then let them work a half session. Imagine the money we would save. And I do believe under this scenario, we could fund all of those fundamental programs to keep our society humming right along here in MS.

And to the whiners, why not propose a solution, like is presented here. Folks tend to respond critically when you ADD to the conversation.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
