MDOC Commissioner Burl Cain blew off the Legislature even though Republicans and Democrats alike had questions about how he runs his agency. Mississippi Today reported:
Lawmakers will hold a hearing on Thursday to look into dire problems with healthcare in Mississippi prisons and allegations of systemic failure to stop preventable deaths and illness.
Prison healthcare problems have been exposed through news investigations, legislative watchdog reports and first-person accounts from those working inside.
But apparently the Mississippi Department of Corrections will be a no-show at the hearing, a letter obtained by Mississippi Today shows.
In a letter on Tuesday to Corrections Commissioner Burl Cain, Public Health Chairs Rep. Sam Creekmore and Sen. Hob Bryan, along with Corrections Chairs Rep. Becky Currie and Sen. Lydia Chassaniol said they were “disappointed to learn that the Department of Corrections will not take part in Thursday’s joint hearing.”... Rest of article.
One particular item of interest to the legislators is Vitalcore. JJ broke the news two years ago that Mr. Cain awarded nearly $300 million in no-bid contracts over four years to the prison healthcare company. Earlier post.

I bet there will be no consequences for Cain not showing up.
Burl Cain had his place leading the state prison system. But, at 84, it's time to move on to another leader. Will the mighty Tater make a change before his term ends ?
Political grandstanding is the only reason the legislature holds such hearings. Just like congress. Bunch of worthless politicians with no skills to do anything other than run for elections.
10% of $300,000,000 would be a nice nest egg.
Indeed. All it takes is greasing the right palms.
Reeves should just fire him and send a clear message.
Hob’s ass needs to go home before he helps us again, most of the time it has been waste of taxpayer funds….
Smells like corruption. Does Shad have jurisdiction over these no-bid contracts? Doesn't the Legislature have subpoena power? Haul his ass to the hearing and swear him in. Let the questions flow.
So will we have a form of Omni Consumer Products (OCP) in our state?
What could possibly go wrong with a $300 million no-bid contract?
I am not sure where he came from, but he is a country bafoon. MDOC is one of the worst run agencies.
Agree with 9:19. Zero consequences.
lock him up!!!!!
OH WAIT.....
Is a no bid contract under MS current state law? If prisons receive federal funding can’t federal government investigate? That is not Cain’s money! That is taxpayer money!
"300 million in no-bid contracts" So its Chris Epps all over again?
Burl answers and works for a lame duck Governor. Do you really Burl make these decisions alone with this kind of money involved?
Louisiana says "we tried to warn you!"
Clueless Tate previously stated, he will stop the bleeding in the state prison system. Guess that was just same old horse hockey. Sad
I guess the inmates will have to wait for their Saturday Steak dinners and top tier cable......72 inch screens so they can watch sports and Oprah.
