Empower Mississippi Podcast: Wither Go Our Parks

The National Park system might be the only thing Washington ever got right on the first try.

Grant Callen sits down with Dayton Duncan, Ken Burns' longtime partner in crime and the man who has probably forgotten more about America's national parks than the rest of us will ever know. If you've seen The National Parks: America's Best Idea, you've already met his work.

They cover how politicians, explorers, conservationists, and a few stubborn visionaries managed to convince America to preserve Yellowstone, Yosemite, the Grand Canyon, and other jaw-dropping places instead of carving them up for whichever railroad, mining company, or well-connected wheeler-dealer showed up first.

Along the way, they discuss John Muir, Theodore Roosevelt, why the parks really are a uniquely American invention, and why they say as much about the country's ideals as they do its scenery.

No politics. No culture war. Just a fascinating conversation about one of America's greatest accomplishments, and why future generations deserve to inherit something besides another Buc-ee's parking lot.

Imagine camping with family on a beautiful rocky, wooded river at 13 y.o. with parents and siblings, peeing on a bush to attract flies, catching a few, baiting them on a teeniny hook and catching a couple trout for breakfast. I love our National Parks.

There is oil there, rip them all down and drill baby drill. Make the liberals scream. MAGA!

Let me know when the Think Tank plans to sit down with the testosterone-laden bunch of mud-grippers who run our pitiful state park system. If Tater was not so averse to sunshine, this crap would be corrected.

BoyOboy...Your dad sounds like fun. Did you get to pull his finger?

Just in case most of you haven't heard yet, due to the narrow bandwidth of your information sources, Trump is allowing and encouraging fossil fuel drilling and AI data center construction in the National Parks.

7:45am, pitiful? Are you joking? Our state parks are GREAT for such a small and poverty stricken state! One thing MS has going for it is some awesome state parks. Certainly improvements are needed in places but overall they do a good job of maintaining them with a tiny budget.

I fail to see a problem. The Dept of the interior maintains nearly a billion acres of land. Very few people leave their cars for more than a photo op at a tourist spot at the national parks these days. They aren’t going to drill or build a data center near the tourist spots. Why don’t you get your panties in a twist over the illegals growing drugs and profiting from child prostitution in our national parks?

Speaking of MSDWFP and our Parks. We are the only state on the Mississippi River that doesn't have a state park with an overlook on the river. We did, it was called Great River Road State Park, and it was shut down by Scott Coopwood and his cronies, turned into a private piece of premium hunting property for connected politicians, and then many years later it was turned into a limited use WMA but there is still something amiss with that. Last year 20 people got to hunt it. Lots of shady stuff with this property. They burned the observation tower and let the facilities ruin.

Btw, just because you own a magazine that thinks Oxford is The Delta, doesn't make you an outdoorsman or worthy of a commission spot, you just make donations. There needs to be an investigation into this fleecing.

I wish more people would approach and bring awareness to the checkerboard public lands in the western United States. There is starting to be some traction, but there are tens of millions of acres that are landlock public lands that are supposed to be available for us to use that we have, or are supposed to have, access to, but don't because they are land locked with no access by large landowners who treat it as their own. They sue people who "corner cross", never touching their land, but the airspace above. It is a very hot topic out west and in the outdoor world.

Our "nicest" State Park is Tishomingo and that's only because of the natural beauty. The lake looks like a stinking (fish are all dead due to hypoxia) mud puddle and the facilities are rotten and termite infested. All of the RV pads are broken and you cant get level on them

Really? You been to any of 'em lately. How about the run-down Leroy Percy? How about the closed-down Holmes County park that was once beautiful? How about Roseda...Wait, they illegally torched that one and made a private 'friends only' hunting preserve. How about all those that don't even have camping dump sites like every other state? How about all the rotted rail road ties dotting every park? Let's take a tour? You ready? Mississippi is not at all interested in providing state parks that promote tourism and places for locals to enjoy.

Poverty stricken? You're full of shit!

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
