A group of Jacksononians launched an effort to help those struggling to pay their water bills.
Donations can be made here at Zeffy. The Zeffy page provides more information:
The Problem
For years, residents in Jackson, Mississippi have faced serious challenges with water infrastructure, billing issues, and economic hardship. Many families now carry large outstanding balances on their Jackson Water accounts, making it difficult to move forward financially.
For working families, seniors, and people living on fixed incomes, these balances can become overwhelming.
No one should live with the fear of losing access to one of life’s most basic necessities.
The Solution
Operation Zero Out is a community-powered relief campaign designed to help residents eliminate past-due water balances and start fresh.
Through this campaign, we will:
- Raise funds to help pay down qualifying overdue water bills
- Prioritize assistance for vulnerable households
- Work directly with residents and partners to verify balances
- Provide relief that helps families move toward zero balance
Our Goal
Our goal is simple:
Help as many Jackson households as possible reach a $0 balance on their water account.
Every contribution helps a resident move closer to financial relief.
How Funds Will Be Used
Funds raised through this campaign will go toward:
- Paying down verified Jackson Water account balances
- Supporting community outreach and resident assistance
We are committed to transparency and community impact.
Who This Helps
This campaign is intended to assist:
- Seniors on fixed incomes
- Working families facing financial hardship
- Residents impacted by billing issues

I would be willing to contribute if it were only for older folks receiving fixed social security income who had large bills because of hidden leaks, but I wouldn't give a penny to the folks who just stopped paying their water bills because there were no consequences if they did stop.
This is much better than trying to get the past due amounts wiped clean.
It's understood there are seniors who have racked up bills over time or have financial issues, but Mr. Henifin is right, there is simply a "...culture of not paying..." in Jackson. I bet so many freeloaders show up to this event who are able bodied and could work, but somehow draw from Uncle Sam enough to drive a decent car, have the latest iPhone, and a ridiculous wig. They probably run the sink while they brush their teeth too.
Good luck.
If you use a product you usually have to pay for it. At least thats how I was raised. It costs around $200,000 to drill for water and set it properly around here
There will probably be quite a few households that will want them to pay every monthly bill for them.
Seniors on social security are not on a
fixed income. They get a raise each Jan.
Will they have to prove they can't afford
the water bill?
Of course, the first order of business will be generous salaries and expenses for the organizers.
I didn't realize Jacksonians were billed for water.
No thanks. I'll donate my hard-earned money to more worthwhile causes.
