The Justice Department wants to expand the jury pool in the prosecution of Hinds County District Attorney Jody Owens, former Jackson Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba, and former Jackson Councilman Aaron Banks.
Prosecutors filed a motion for intradistrict transfer or district-wide venire under seal today in U.S. District Court.
The motion is probably asking to transfer the case from the Jackson division to the Gulfport division in the Southern District of Mississippi or to increase the pool of jurors from the Jackson division to the entire Southern District.
The defendants are scheduled to go to trial in July.

What are their chances?
Some of you attorneys who practice Federal criminal law please tell us what are the chances of success on this motion.
Good!
im ready to see all of them frog walking in shackles to the van for their trip to the federal pen. Lumumba is a charlatan. it is unfortunate that Rukia didn’t get some charges from the DOGE investigations into USAID.
Granted
GOOD!!!!
I hope they get to transfer south, get away from central MS.
in 1999 city councilman robert williams was tried on bribery charges.
the first trial ended in a mistrial on both counts.
before the retrial the u s attorneys office moved to expand the jury pool to the entire southern district of mississippi
the request was granted by wingate who was presiding.
but.....the coast is not a jury of his "peers"
3:15 - It's a federal grand jury trial. If it's within the United States, it's "his peers".
Lumumba is going to enjoy prison. He can finally be his "true" self. You know what I mean.
Getting out of Jackson cause it is a death sntence.
Tik tok Chokwe.
Your time as a non felon gets shorter with every passing day.
There's a cell waiting for you.
Can felons and dope boys and girls serve on federal juries?
If not, then he won't be getting a jury of his peers.
@3:15 I disagree.
gulfport, pascagoula, and moss point have all the demographic problems of Jackson.
@3:51pm LOL not even close. Not. Even. Close.
I've lost track but home Wingate is not in the picture. Expansion of the pool is the next best thing (to impartiality) to a complete change of venue (if that's available in a federal trial). It will also help the prosecution if all seated attorneys are black.
By the way, 3:35, Chokwe has no peers.
Delays.
How many continuances does each side ( Defense, Prosecution) get in this type of federal trial?
The Sixth amendment guarantees the accused a right to a fair trial by an impartial jury. There is no right to hat guarantees the government either a fair trial or an impartial jury. Would love to know the government's basis for this motion.
Crusade Man - If you thought Rudy Warnock's continuances represented a circle jerk, you ain't seen nuthin' yet.
Continuances will flow like Jackson Boo Boo, all orchestrated to convince the prosecution to conclude with no time to serve.
Five years of randomly peeing in a cup will reform Chokwe's behavior. And after all, rehabilitation is the ultimate goal, right.
Well, how damned dumb can you be. Obviously, and without question, the reason is an attempt to broaden the pool to avoid an abundance of locals and others already predisposed to protect the black plaintiffs.
This is not exactly what Kingfish's post says...

WLBT reports that the request is for a bigger jury pool or change of venue.
The only practical solution is a change of venue. Expanding the jury pool to all Southern District Counties would significantly inconvenience a lot of jurors who would have to stay in hotels for weeks, obtain child care, etc. etc.
The struggle is real, right?
The real question is whether Lemumba feels like he can actually beat this in court, or if he will agree to a plea deal for reduced sentence. If it goes to court and he loses, he'll be in lockup for a lot of the years he has left to live.
Ironic all that talk by Baby Chok about self-determination and all.....
in a criminal trial the government cannot get a change of venue, but they can move to expand the jury pool within the southern district of mississippi.
The feds or the indicted?
A family member of mine who lives in south Mississippi received a federal jury summons last April that was mailed from the Jackson court address. He completed the questionnaire and told me he wondered if the summons might be connected to Lumumba’s eventual trial.
