A group of Jacksononians launched an effort to help those struggling to pay their water bills.
Donations can be made here at Zeffy. The Zeffy page provides more information:
The Problem
For years, residents in Jackson, Mississippi have faced serious challenges with water infrastructure, billing issues, and economic hardship. Many families now carry large outstanding balances on their Jackson Water accounts, making it difficult to move forward financially.
For working families, seniors, and people living on fixed incomes, these balances can become overwhelming.
No one should live with the fear of losing access to one of life’s most basic necessities.
The Solution
Operation Zero Out is a community-powered relief campaign designed to help residents eliminate past-due water balances and start fresh.
Through this campaign, we will:
- Raise funds to help pay down qualifying overdue water bills
- Prioritize assistance for vulnerable households
- Work directly with residents and partners to verify balances
- Provide relief that helps families move toward zero balance
Our Goal
Our goal is simple:
Help as many Jackson households as possible reach a $0 balance on their water account.
Every contribution helps a resident move closer to financial relief.
How Funds Will Be Used
Funds raised through this campaign will go toward:
- Paying down verified Jackson Water account balances
- Supporting community outreach and resident assistance
We are committed to transparency and community impact.
Who This Helps
This campaign is intended to assist:
- Seniors on fixed incomes
- Working families facing financial hardship
- Residents impacted by billing issues
- Households struggling with accumulated balances
The Impact
Your donation can help:
Prevent service disruptions
Reduce financial stress for families
Restore dignity and stability for Jackson residents
Sometimes relief starts with something simple:
A bill that finally reads $0.
How You Can Help

Share the campaign with your network
Encourage others to contribute
Support Jackson families in need
Together we can help our neighbors start fresh.

I would be willing to contribute if it were only for older folks receiving fixed social security income who had large bills because of hidden leaks, but I wouldn't give a penny to the folks who just stopped paying their water bills because there were no consequences if they did stop.
This is much better than trying to get the past due amounts wiped clean.
It's understood there are seniors who have racked up bills over time or have financial issues, but Mr. Henifin is right, there is simply a "...culture of not paying..." in Jackson. I bet so many freeloaders show up to this event who are able bodied and could work, but somehow draw from Uncle Sam enough to drive a decent car, have the latest iPhone, and a ridiculous wig. They probably run the sink while they brush their teeth too.
Good luck.
If you use a product you usually have to pay for it. At least thats how I was raised. It costs around $200,000 to drill for water and set it properly around here
There will probably be quite a few households that will want them to pay every monthly bill for them.
Seniors on social security are not on a
fixed income. They get a raise each Jan.
Will they have to prove they can't afford
the water bill?
Of course, the first order of business will be generous salaries and expenses for the organizers.
I didn't realize Jacksonians were billed for water.
No thanks. I'll donate my hard-earned money to more worthwhile causes.
What will you do when the account is paid and then the first month of the new bill comes out and they don't pay?
Sounds like a good thing… but I have a habit of checking the CEO or equivalent’s salary before donating to any charity. You would be AMAZED at how well many are paid. I hope this one is worthwhile.
Ironic that Brad, Lambright, et al have made soooo much noise about the meters being inaccurate. Now, with this effort, they are obviously capitulating on that point going forward. Because why would you ever zero out a bill if you felt the readings were erroneous? What a joke!.
Lived in jxn since 1988. Single person. The water bills used to come every 2 months and the bill was about $45. Then they came monthly and about the same amount. Then they never came.
Asking them to prove it would be racist. Right?
You are so right when you say those on social security are not on a fixed income, because my income is broke all the time.
Interesting, think I will apply. I fit many of the categories listed - wonder how far I will get in the process. IF they do as they suggest is their intent and actually pay off the built-up balance on my account, I will gladly come back to this same site, where I first saw their plan, and report so with details.
And, if I get turned down - for whatever reason, some of which I can anticipate - I will also come on this site and report that result.
Are phone bills, car payments, rent, credit card payments, gambling losses, new shoes next?
Don't see what people are griping about. They always bitch about government handouts. Well, this is people in the private sector getting together to help others. Nothing wrong with it.
2:11 cola raises are 2-3 percent which for most of us is around 30 to 60 dollars and Medicare raises our payment just about 30 dollars
Sentimental, tear jerk catfishing for dollars. Where else in the USA is it necessary to pay other people's water bills? What happens to responsibility and budgeting if such "mock charity" only reinforces an entitlement mindset into stubborn concrete?
If water is so important then give up something less important, pay the water bill.
BTW, when will owners of apartment complexes who steal the water payments from tenants go to prison? These apartment owners are stealing from all of us who have to pay more because they owe tens of unpaid, stolen millions of dollars, cumulatively.
9:55 - "Don't see what people are griping about...". Fish, you host a blog for a bunch of whiney, naysayin' bitches. They always have something to whine about.
Some commenters are ignoring that many of the bills were not for water actually getting into the homes. They were paying for leaks in the system.
Worse, many of the leaks were at the meters or in lines in the system. Some, no doubt, were caused by Yazoo clay. I paid my bills anyway and not just because I can and being a good citizen and neighbor is more important to me than money.
I pay because I know that Jackson has been a political whipping post and deprived of federal funds given the state until it became a disaster.
I think VERY POORLY of both parties when they try to keep power by hurting their own citizens to get an edge. That is what we let politics become. That we are that lazy that loyalty to a party erases not just common sense but self-interest, If you prioritize US the interests of your nation, state, county, city/town, neighborhood interests in reverse order to fix what is rotting. You start at the roots. And, shame on all of you who don't bother to check if a politician is telling you the truth before you get pissy!
What a great idea! Heck, yeah, I want to have to pay my bill and some deadbeat’s too. A night of community action, live performances, and fellowship? I’m puttin’ on my top hat, tyin’ up my white, tie, brushin’ off my tails.
Who are the organizations involved in the campaign efforts? We would contribute knowing who is organizing, the accountability & transparency in the assistance provided. Otherwise, we'll align with church communities that provide direct help.
Ohhhhh heck yes, sign me up. Please don't wait! Why???? Because I am a "dumb *ss" wanting someone new to bilk me out of some of my money. You see, I am an elderly person and I have a few dollars sacked away and I just don't know what to do with it. Well....this is perfect. I have the need to want to send my hard-earned money to another wonderful group (that I have no earthly idea about WHO they are, I might add) simply because they present themselves as HONEST. Oh h*ll yes, sign me up....NOT!!! Hilarious.
You are ignorant in the way the water system works. You should educate yourself before posting on a subject.
Why did these wet panty pity pirates not demand the wastrel City pay its $6.5M monkey moat bill when that monstrous incompetency surfaced? When will the thieving Apartment Complex owners be punished severely for their cumulative millions stolen from tenants and JxnWater?
I think it's a good thing if they pay the bills for people who truly can't afford
to pay and not for the ones that just
don't want to pay.
Those who are conditioned to government support won't understand that they have to start paying future water bills once it's zeroed out.
Better details in article.

What Kingfish fails to see, down the road is this: This community effort by just regular, caring people will generate, at most $52,000 dollars. Then the group of fine, caring people will resort to submitting grant applications to Uncle Sugar's office, care of Bennie Thompson. Then when Uncle Sugar approves the grants, the taxpayers will be on the hook for hundreds of thousands in free, federal money. But, the bills will be zeroed out....until the bills start arriving again, and are ignored.
Previous administration is the big cause for this. Never sent out hills and didn’t even know how to send bills ! Winder his much the mayor owed! He wanted the people to live for free. Just look at his much the owners if the apartment complex owes !
Franklin and his rhetoric.
If you’re foolish enough to donate to this “charity”, you might as well give the rest of your money to one of Lakeland Dr dopehead bums. Who is behind this and how much are they paying themselves to do these good deeds?
