From the pages of social media this morning:
There is a large dead raccoon on corner of Old Canton and Newland St…called 311 and they said call JPD 601-960-1234…dispatch said they aren’t over animal control and call critter catcher…I am not paying a private company to do the city’s job so if you or kids walk that way be careful as no telling what diseases are on it and will probably be stinking!

Well I don't believe it's the City's responsibility to spend resources to clean up a dead racoon. They have bigger issues to deal with. And even if they didn't, the buzzards have to eat something. However, they should have told the caller just that without shuffling them around.
Whose property is it on? Real simple.
At least they didn’t transfer you to the Philippines.
yes lets add rabies to the list of third world disease outbreaks in Jackson! Because this short-sighted indifference is how disease takes root in the third world.
Agree! Jackson is at a cultural level that 90% of residents think the city, state and Feds are responsible from birth to grave of all of their needs! Get off your butt and dispose of the critter.
It is the city or county involved responsibility
Jackson has a hard enough job just moving the dead human bodies off of the streets.

Bigger issues like how much they can skim?
I had a similar situation yesterday. I live in the Cross Creek subdivision in Madison. Yesterday morning there was a dead possum in the middle of the street in front of my house. Knowing that there would be several buzzards here real soon I took a large garbage bag and my shovel and put the dead possum in the garbage bag and sealed it up tightly. The garbage truck picked that bag up this morning.
9:48, I disagree. But please explain what bigger issues is the city actually dealing with? Nothing in the city is being run, except into the ground. The mayor thinks his only job is to steer contracts to favorites. The decline of the airport in the last few years to the point of barely functioning is the latest example of Lumumba mismanagement. Along with Thalia Mara Hall. And now the developers from Nashville probably won’t even build the convention center hotel they paid for.
Rather ironic that some of you criticize the job Jackson is doing on basic necessities like roads, water, sewer, etc. (justified) but expect them to drop everything for a dead racoon. You people are soft.
In Jackson- everyone is a victim.
I don't live in Jackson but think it would be a reasonable response to bag up the dead raccoon and put it on the mayor's doorstep.
hey map maker, it's in the street - that makes it YOUR property.
“Buzzards gotta eat, same as worms.” Clint Eastwood
Does "Critter Control" pay kickbacks to the mayor?
If the large, dead raccoon is a public safety hazard (cars having to swerve into other lanes to avoid running over it) or a public health hazard (flies, maggots & other insects), & it is on public property (like a public thoroughfare), then it is most certainly the city's responsibility to remove the carcass. Expecting the city to live up to its responsibilities, though, is another issue altogether.
Someone should get some rubber gloves, grab the raccoon, and throw it into Baby Chok's yard.
Jackson is dealing with an average of 6 homicide A MONTH, and you are worried about a dead raccoon?????
Oh, just fling it onto the City Hall front yard. A homeless person there probably could use a meal.
LaBlundermumba: We've called in the buzzards to savor a coon fest. Otherwise I am the road kill you should protect from getting run over again and cannot comment on my bribery trap.
9:48, more important things to handle. You mean like the police driving by a fatal accident and not stopping......Just how many times did yo momma drop you on your head as a child.
What a shame the new federal government is not in place. The cabinet office run by Cabinet Czar Ribert Kennedy Jr. will be in charge of roadkill removal under a nationwide "any cost is acceptable" mandate, since that meat source is a personal favorite of RFK Jr. I understand he really likes BBQ'ed coon. For the easily offended, raccoon is what he likes.
I called once because an area downtown near the Westin had not been mowed in months. They told me they mow the areas that get the most complaints.
I had to go in there because they wouldn't answer the phone for days. One guy was holding a baby while the two females were watching movies on their phone.
Should've told them it was a manhole missing its cover that could likely cause a serious accident leading to death. You would've gotten the same damn response.
The city isn't taking care of the roads, the water, and sewer, is being run by a third party. They should have plenty of workers, and time, to clean up road kill.
Was at the airport last week.
No air conditioning and heard several others complaining about the stifling heat.
Watched a group of traveling athletes fill up water bottles from the fountain and promptly poor it out after one sip while they made faces to imply it was not drinkable.
Another large group near me complained that they wanted lunch but the lone restaurant open only had one server and one cook show up and the food wait was over an hour so they decided they would wait til Atlanta connection to eat.
So I think it would be silly to think Jackson could handle anything at all at this point.
They are really good at losing revenue and turning profitable assets into rundown garbage, I guess.
@2:38. It is just like that movie called Idiocracy ….
Does anyone in this discussion live at lake Caroline? I have heard mixed reviews, but am thinking it would be an upgrade to living in Jackson.
Animal Control hasn't existed since Kane Ditto got elected
Tending to the smaller details leads to better handling of the bigger things.
The state has 2 options take over Jackson or move the capital
Jackson is a little Detroit
A large dead raccoon on Old Canton Road ?
Somewhere, there's a Jerry Clower story in all of this ....
3:20 you are incorrect. animal control was dissolved by Lumumba. He cancelled the $1500/month contract with Waste Management to pick up dead animals from city streets and private properties (in the case of dead deer for example). They also dealt with packs of roving pit bulls and the like in neighborhoods. This is all on your clown Mair. I thank heavens I no longer live on your shithole city, that can't even cut the grass at city cemetaries. To all you rube yahoos criticizing the initiator of this post.....every civilzed city in America, save your shithole, has a functioning anaimal control division.
It sounds like the start of the plot of the BEST episode of Always Sunny In Philadelphia
The county ranger is responsible for removal of dead animals in Mississippi this was the duty of the coroner but...
Miss. Code § 19-21-109
Current through the 2024 Regular Session
Section 19-21-109 - Transfer of duties from county ranger to sheriff of county
The duties of the county ranger, heretofore exercised by the coroner, shall be transferred to the sheriff of the county, who shall have all the duties and powers of the ranger's office.
Miss. Code § 19-21-109
Laws, 1986, ch. 459, § 5, eff. 7/1/1986.
How could the city not have workers avail? 99% of them are doing NOTHING. If Pookie dont have to work, then Ray-Ray want the day off too.
12:36, one can't. The wall BabyChok lives behind, was made two blocks higher, if I'm remembering correctly, before he moved in. I believe the height now exceeds code, but laws aren't for everybody.
Any place in Mississippi would be an upgrade compared to Jackson. Jackson is a little Detroit
