Jackson Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba brought in some out of state hired guns to fight his indictments for public corruption.
Attorneys Jeffrey L. Edison and Gerald Evelyn filed motions to appear pro hac vice yesterday in U.S. District Court. The two lawyers practice in Detroit, Michigan.
Meanwhile, Jody Owens, Aaron Banks, Lumumba, and the prosecution filed a joint motion for continuance and asked the Court to declare the case "complex" today.
The case is assigned to U.S. District Judge Daniel P. Jordan, III.
Kingfish note: The indictment stated Owens said "I've done background checks. They're not FBI by the way."
It seems the District Attorney watched The Wire one too many times. He does know this scene is fiction, right?

He can hire all the lawyers he wants. Fighting the feds rarely has a good outcome.
The mayor is going to use the Jackson's Taxpayer money to pay for his law team. Is Judge Daniel Patrick Jordan, III. a flaming liberal?
Huh? No, the City of Jackson should not be paying for the legal defense of the mayor's criminal charges. Now that doesn't mean it won't, just that it shouldn't. And no, Judge Jordan is far from "a flaming liberal" as you call it. If anything, he leans to the conservative side.
They may want to drag this out as long as possible, by having it declared “complex.” It’s as simple as, you are on audio and video discussing and taking bribes. That’s the beginning and end of that.
In all his lawyering, he doesn't get the same firm that he passed the Siemens contract $30mil to? Seems like they would owe him a favor. I looked and they have a criminal defense division. Something is amiss. He hires Bellinder and then some Detroit jive turkeys with much of their bio having to do with race based issues. I wonder if they are going to play the card to the feds?
Never a good idea to bring in out of town lawyers. Even on the Fed level you want an attorney who knows the players, court officials and judges.
"Is Judge Daniel Patrick Jordan, III. a flaming liberal?"
You really aren't from around here, are you.
He was nominated by George W Bush so he probably has some sense
You couldn’t find a better judge than Dan Jordan to hear this case.
That's my concern with this case.....drag in court, continuance, continuance, delay, delay. I pray that doesn't happen.
Hiring Chokwe Sr's pals.
How does one find out the various court dates/times KF so one could go down to the courthouse and watch in person?
Ruh roh! Detroit lawyers! (Are they like Philadelphia lawyers or NY lawyers?) These be Chowke's new "legal team."
He will be beaten in the election before his actual trial begins.
It should come as no surprise. The mayor's constituency is only technically in Jackson, it's really in places like Detroit, New York, D.C., San Fran etc. Jackson is simply the temporary base of operations. If he needs money, legal help, or political guidance he will look to those places.
The citizens of Jackson should pay for every cent of the defense as punishment for being dumb enough to elect him. They wanted for us by us, now they can enjoy the consequences of their suffrage.
For the legal folks out there, how long can you drag out a federal case? Surely it's not as easy as continuing a murder case in Hinds County.
So much for local minority contracts.
I suspect Chockwe and his Detroit attorneys want to make this case a race circus and aim for jury nullification at trial. Too bad he didn't draw Wingate, who already knows from experience what Lumumba is about.
I think Judge Jordan is going to have a keep a tight grip on this case to keep it from spiraling out of control.
Of course from Detroit
Ok, let's unpack. First, "pro hac vice" has nothing to do with who is paying anyone for anything, it is a request from an attorney who isn't licensed to practice, in this case, in Mississippi nor interested in generally practicing here, to enter into a particular case as an attorney. It is commonplace, especially in big civil litigation. Literally, nothing to see there (but the comment about it being a potentially poor idea in this type of case is correct). Second, the motion is a joint one and this wasn't going to trial in the next few weeks, motion or not. Again, nothing to see there.
However, as the KF points out, "The indictment stated Owens said 'I've done background checks. They're not FBI by the way.'" might be something. If nothing else, and whatever "background checks" might mean or be argued to mean, the "investors/developers" status as "not FBI" being a major thing in the minds of the accused tends to indicate scienter. In other words, if you don't think or at least suspect your role in what would supposedly be a public and publicized business deal is illegal, why would you care about the (perfectly legal and respectable) profession(s) of other potential investors. Hell, having a couple of feds as fellow investors could be helpful to such a project, and it certainly wouldn't be detrimental to legit dealings.
Who’s paying for these Detroit lawyers?
Even with the audio and video evidence, sadly the citizens of Jackson will be dazzled by the mayor’s bullshit and re-elect him.
KF please investigate/inform Jackson and Lil Choke world of other "Campaign Contributions" from Richard's, Smith Wills lease, etc that have enabled our fake mayor to buy expensive outside counsel.
Somebody needs to read the motion. This is a JOINT motion filed by DOJ lawyers and the defense. That being said, it is virtually certain that Judge Jordan will declare it a "complex" case and grant the continuance -- which all parties are requesting.

> It is commonplace, especially in big civil litigation.
But this isn't civil litigation. It's criminal. Though I wonder if not being barred in the state the case is in would affect that since the trial will be on federal statutory law.
daddy lumumbles was from detroit. I'm sure his detroit lawyers as as militant as daddy was.
The whole “entrapment” bull$h!+ sort of falls apart when one considers the Owens quote in the indictment referencing running the bribes thru the campaign accounts, “… like we’ve done before.” See, Chowke, you got fat and happy and comfortable with your graft and corruption. Pigs get fat. Hogs get slaughtered.
Will he be required to pay back the money he was paid for three years, despite not having file a campaign finance report for three years?
Gerald Evelyn represented Kwame Kilpatrick.
On March 11, 2013, in spite of a vigorous defense that cost taxpayers more than a million dollars, Kilpatrick was found guilty by a jury on two dozen counts including those for racketeering, extortion, mail fraud, and tax evasion, among others.
Kilpatrick was sentenced to 28 years in prison and Donald Trump commuted his sentence after serving only 6 years & 4 months.
Calling John Grisham.
This must be a different Jeffrey L Edison than the Jeffrey L Edison of the Edison and Lumumba P.C. law firm of Detroit Michigan located at 11000 West McNichols, Detroit MI in the early 1980s.
Right?
you beat me with this part, but wait there's more!
If I had the Mayor's ear, just for 60 seconds, I would tell him "now is not the time to bring in a radical to make a point."

This must be a joke. Is this "My Cousin Quontravius" the sequel? A UVA Judge, US District Court, and you are going to hire a 100 year old Nation of Islam DUI lawyer and a guy of which was written: "As attorneys, we want to have a certain look, a presence that is felt the moment we walk into the courtroom. It’s that elusive blend of style and substance that we believe will convince the judge and persuade the jury that our argument is not just right, but righteous."
It's gonna be righteous all right-laughed right out of the court and maybe into the USM holding cell for contempt. Stop this fool hiring them.
There ought to be a law against MS lawyers bringing in DUI and ambulance chaser lawyers into Fed Crim Court. God help him.
The perception of bribery
A continuance? Who do these guys think they are, Rudy? The trial date is Jan. 6. Isn't that the anniversary of the dude with a painted face wearing a furry animal pelt and a hat with horns ala a Simpsons character turned the nation upside down? How'd they get that date? A "blessing" from Papa Joe via Uncle Bennie that surely Lester the Fester on the NBC nightly news would never mention on the evening of Jan. 6?

Here's my take. I am making assumptions.
The feds have video and audio of the accused doing the things charged (generally). They are factually guilty as charged. There has been nothing serious put forth about improper procedure. The likelihood is that either a guilty plea or jury finding them guilty is in the cards. With no substantive defects in the case, the ball is currently in the Defendants' court to weigh the certainty of a plea vs the risk of trial. Either way, they are entitled to counsel. If they want these guys and there is no particular reason for either to be denied status, let them in - saves all sorts of pointless argument at every stage. At this point, it is nothing but plea vs trial and the feds don't, or shouldn't, care who negotiates a plea and sentence. From the fed's perspective at the bargaining stage, where the attorney is licensed isn't important other than home-cooking. I doubt there will be any home-cooking between Jordan and these two. Good chance allegations of racism will occur. If Chok and Owens get their choice of counsel, one less point to ponder.
My current guess: Chok - on a plea, he gets somewhere between 7-10, with a trial, 9-14, Owens, plea 9-14, trial, 16-22, but short of some bombshell problem for the feds, several years of prison for each is in their futures.
5:25 said, "So much for local minority contracts."
Winner! We have a winner!
He's screwed. He just doesn't realize it, yet. The Feds don't even indict unless their case is a slam dunk. Fighting it will only buy him a longer prison sentence. So, I say, "Chokwe, fight that thing like your hair is on fire."
Kilpatricks Lawyer will lose again
I would tell him "Please proceed Mr Mayor, Please Proceed!".
Someone asked, "How long can you drag out a federal case?" I'm not sure, exactly, but you could ask Rudy.
The “like we’ve done before” comment…please tell me the feds are chasing that rabbit.
Lawyers from Detroit? Is this like an adaptation of “My Cousin Vinny”?? Are LeMumbles and Jody the two Yutes???
More proof it's a cult.
Betting Choke is broke.
Judge Dan Jordan is not liberal.
Bankruptcy filing by the end of next year!
Had he drawn Wingate and tried the race card there . . . . I had a pre-trial conference against Chokwe's father who wore a dashiki and Wingate nearly stroked out. And was it Paul Minor who called in the Nation of Islam bodyguards? You'd have to be an idiot (or from out of town) to pull stunts like that in front of Judge Wingate.
While conducting a criminal conspiracy meeting on a yacht in Ft. Lauderdale you were told that "We are not the FBI," you may be entitled to compensation. Dewey, Cheatham, and Howe guarantees it.
Perhaps the DOJ needs the extension so that they can add new indictments.
Chockwe is trying to pull an OJ.
If Chowke misses a court appearance will there be a "low speed chase," because "high speed chases" are forbidden in Chowke's radical kush city?
I am so disappointed its a joint motion. We need DOJ to jump on this, not delay it.
Richard’s Legal must be tied up at the moment.
There was no chance any trials would take place early next year. If anyone goes to trial, it will probably be a year to year and a half from now.
Is he going to stick the citizens of Jackson with his lawyer bill? Because he was acting in his “official capacity” as mayor. KF—. What say you?
A 7-figure legal bill might be Lumumba's last good opportunity to kick a contract back upstairs to Detroit.
Chalkline has no use for Jackson nor Mississippi. He's only about his own grifting self-aggrandizement.
That just breaks my heart. That means we have to deal with him for another year to year and a half. Kingfish, you just ruined my day.
Who sees the inside of Club Fed first, Rudy or Baby Chok?
As a poster above noted, MumbaLumba SENIOR, a.k.a. one Edward Taliaferro- is originally from Detroit.
He moved to Mississippi Threw on his Dashiki changed his name to some fake African made up baloney,, all in effort to overthrow the government of the United States of America and carve out a totally black separatist country.
Illegal? Hmmm. But instead of being identified as the racist seditious lunatic that he truly was - he repetitively made a giant ass of himself and thus was eventually elected mayor
THATS why all the money and support is coming from DEEtroit and why mumbalumba junior holds actual fundraisers in HARLEM
not making any of this up
The city of Jackson is literally the country of Liberia
@5:52.. Yes.. I recall reading that when Lumumba Sr. was elected. His separatist group wanted to establish a country in the southeast USA called The Republic Of New Afrika...
It's way past time to empty the trash...
The city council will have to vote to approve the hiring or payment of these lawyers IF the city is paying. So watch the Minutes and the upcoming agendas of city council
Are there photos from the Mayor's lap dances at the Miami strip club?
