15 Year-Old Indicted in Mother's Murder

The Rankin County grand jury indicted Carly Gregg for first degree murder, attempted murder, and tampering with evidence on May 22. Gregg stands accused of shooting her mother to death and wounding her stepfather on March 19.

The indictment is posted below.

Gregg waived arraignment and pleaded not guilty.  Rankin County Court Judge David Morrow set her bond at $1 million at her initial appearance.  The case is assigned to Rankin County Circuit Judge Dewey Arthur.  Attorneys Kevin Camp, Bridgett Todd, and Caleb Coleman represent the defendant although Camp has yet to appear in court.

Gregg is the daughter of Ashley Smiley and stepdaughter of Heath Smiley.  The 40 year-old Ashley was a popular math teacher at Northwest Rankin High School.  Their home in on Ashton Way in the Farmington Station subdivision in Rankin County.  She was 14 years-old when the shootings took place.

JJ reported on Gregg's April 16 preliminary hearing:

Assistant District Attorney Ryan Perry called RCSO Investigator Zachary Cotton to the stand.  The investigator said RCSO dispatch received a call on March 19 from a man who was frantic.  The caller said "their child had shot at them, and shot them in the neck."

Deputies went to the scene and found the deceased Ashley Smiley in a bedroom and found a wounded Heath Smiley.  Heath identified Gregg as the shooter.  Gregg had fled the scene.

Deputies found her half a mile away.  They recovered the murder weapon.

Cotton said there was some video footage of the deadly events that took place that afternoon.  An exterior camera in the garage showed Gregg and her mother arriving home at approximately 4 that afternoon.  The camera and the interior camera in the kitchen showed Gregg taking the dogs outside while Ashley went to her daughter's bedroom.   There were no other cameras in the house.  Ashley "took some items out of Carly's room" as Carly came back inside and noticed her mother was in her bedroom.

The investigator said Gregg went to her mother's bedroom, came out with her hands behind her back as she concealed an object, and went to her bedroom where her mother was.  "You hear a gunshot, a scream, and then two more gunshots," said Cotton.   Ashley was shot twice in the side of the face and once underneath her chin.  Deputies recovered all three bullets.

Camera footage showed Gregg returning to the kitchen.  She "placed a heavy object on the counter" and texted Heath on Ashley's phone, asking how long it would be until he got home.  She took down the camera and placed it in the refrigerator.

The garage camera showed Heath arriving at home, "you hear gunshots," and "Carly left home," said Cotton.

Before Heath arrived, Gregg texted a friend "It's an emergency, I need you to come over."  She played with her dogs and sang to them as she waited for her friend.

The friend arrived around 4:50 (driven by her father).  She later told investigators Gregg asked her if she ever saw a dead body before.  The friend replied no.  Cotton testified Gregg showed her dead mother in the bedroomand the gun she used to shoot her mom to her friend.  You read that correctly.  Gregg showed off her kill to her friend if the friend is to be believed.  (8:00)

The friend said that Gregg said there were more for Heath, "two for the head, one for the chest."  The courtroom became very silent as a chill spread across the room.

The friend and her father went to RCSO that evening and cooperated with the investigation.

Cotton testified that when jail employee provided bond paperwork to Gregg, the teen said "oh, you can kill someone, pay a lot of money, and get out of jail.".... Earlier post with video.

This little Gen Z is spoiled, entitled and lost!

Sad situation. This country, and our youth, are near lost. I don't know if the ship can be righted. My one message to young couples, don't feel you need to have a bunch of kids, over the next 50 years life's going to get much harder for everyone but the elites.

Very sad happening.

Guarantee you that had that child doped up.

Procedural question: Why does she get THREE appointed public defenders?

Anonymous said...

With physical evidence, video evidence, and confession to multiple people, it would seem like a slam dunk for the DA. Is she pleading not-guilty to give her time to get a better deal or to bolster her diminished capacity claim? What's going on?

This is what occurs when you have a medicated society. Dispensing Phsycotropic drugs to youth is a sure fire way to screw their lives up, your lives and anyone around them. This girl should never ever be allowed back into society. This is why we had mental hospitals like Whitfield but we no longer do. That’s where you send people like this before they get to this point. People like her cannot be reformed or rehabilitated. Their brain doesn’t work that way. Parents make sure you write this girls name down. If she ever gets out make sure your sons don’t get tied up with her.

Will she be charged with death penalty or os she too young?

Kevin Camp is one of her attorneys…I don’t think he is a public defender in Rankin county.

In very simple terms, what we're seeing is the contrast between two parenting styles that radically changed over the last 30 years. For probably 2000 years a parent might say, "If you don't stop crying, I'll give you something to really cry about". Which again, about 30 years ago parents began to say, "If you stop crying, we'll go get you some ice cream" giving all the power to a child.

The future is bleak because that's what creates psychopaths...not over medication.

Those lawyers were retained by Carly's extended family. Or should I say her surviving extended family - those she hasn't shot and killed.

@3:41 doped up? Yea that Lexapro is a hell of a drug.

@7:51

Shooting your mother in the face 3 times has nothing to do with parenting and everything (likely) to do with mental illness. This person is very obviously batshit crazy and the precipitating factor damn sure wasnt "weak parenting"

I agree with 9:49. This girl is very mentally ill and needs to be locked up for life. There is no medication to "fix" her antisocial psychosis. Bless her parents who no doubt did their best with her.

8:49am and 10:02am You both have no idea what you're talking about.

Read the book "Inside the Criminal Mind" by Stanton Samenow and maybe you'll begin to understand where the entitled, narcissistic tendencies begin - which is in childhood.

Today's youth have been over-indulged at every turn. "Weak" parenting would actually be wonderful. Try "Zero" parenting in the last 30 years - parents decided to become their child's friend, and when that "friend" attempts to limit their child's access to their cell phone - the rage of that child's narcissism becomes murderous because the parent "friend" has now betrayed them. We will see much more of this in the future, not just isolated incidents.

Roper v. Simmons overturned juvenile executions. Miller v. Alabama made life in prison unconstitutional for juveniles. Lets just see how this plays out, I'm thinking a plea on manslaughter and aggravated assault..... she'll be back on the streets before she's 40.

Wrong. It banned life without parole sentences. Can still get life but have to have chance at parole. Parole can still be denied.

Look up Lonnie Cruise, Jackson. After committing a similiar crime decades ago, he spent the rest of his life, over 40 years, in the state hospital at Whitfield. That's where she belongs. Maybe she can find meaningful work there.

Bet some of her mother's state of MS life insurance is funding her defense too. If her stepdad were the beneficiary he has long been paid.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required.
