Jackson Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba whipped out the race card and accused the state of trying to make Jackson "less black" in a conversation secretly recorded by former Deputy Public Works Director Mary Carter. The recording was revealed in Ms. Carter's federal civil trial this week.
Hizzoner said "There is a coordinated effort to take this water treatment facility away and that effort is bigger than the typical little politics we get into. If that happens, that is going to be the first step of making this city no longer black. And I'm not talking some large conspiracy. It's what happened in Detroit. Detroit ain't as black as it used to be. It’s a change in the politics. And the reason that happened is they know that is the way you finance and support everything you do. So we know that while they are making their effort..."

The Mayor also said former State Health Officer Dr. Thomas Dobbs resigned his position because "he was fed up with them." It is presumed "them" means the state. Hizzoner said public works "is on life support" while Chief of Staff Safiya Omari (PhD) said "We got people getting paychecks who ain't doing work. People got cars and don't do nothing but sit up in the office all day."
Kingfish note: That was the news, now for the opinion. Hmmm.... the Mayor complains white flight devastated Jackson's finances and crippled the water/sewer system yet he also complains the state wants to make the city less black. Which is it, Mayor? Or maybe it's a case of he just wants the white folks' money but doesn't want them to live in Jackson. Do these statements mean the Mayor is a Black Separatist?
I've got news for you, Mayor. There is no grand conspiracy to make Jackson "less black" as you put it . The whites aren't coming back to Jackson, especially if they have kids and can't afford expensive private schools. They don't want to come back to poor schools, traffic signals that don't work, and pothole-laden roads. They don't want to come back to a city where the Mayor makes it quite clear they are unwanted. They want to live in cities that actually work. That goes for quite a few blacks, your honor, as they have moved out of Jackson as well. Simply put, the whites who have moved out don't want Jackson and an increasing number of blacks don't want it either.
Then there is the matter of Detroit. Did Detroit really become less black? Let's look at some census numbers. The Mayor claims he likes to do research, let's check his research. The statistics posted below are derived from the U.S. census.
1990: Blacks 76%, Whites 22%
2000: Blacks 82%, Whites 12%, Hispanics 5%
2010: Blacks 83%, Whites 11%, Hispanics 5%
2020: Blacks 78%, Whites 11%, Hispanics 10%
Contrary to what the Mayor claims, the white population in Detroit is half of what it was in 1990 and has remained at 11-12% for the last twenty years. Blacks comprise nearly 80% of the population. Although the white population proportion remained unchanged, the population is little more than half of what it was in 2000 (116,599/68407). The black population fell from 775,772 to 496,534.
Just one more example of Lumumba making up facts on the fly, reality be damned.
I seem to remember Ridgeland getting in trouble with HUD because private emails between officials and residents complained about the city and schools becoming less white. Double standard?

I'm sick of racist mayors that want to disqualify me from my right to live in Jackson, even though the property that I live on and own has been in my family since 1965. I'm tired of the racist opinion of every color and gender that taps a keyboard on this blog and I'm tired of people attesting to how I feel about Jackson because I'm white. I have a right to live here as much as anyone else that bleeds red. Period.

What are Conspiratorial people? The history books are full of conspiracies. There was an evil conspiracy to infect the African American community with syphilis called the Tuskegee Experiment. to CL’s credit, he must have been to Detroit recently. The downtown and immediately surrounding neighborhoods are awesome! and the entire city is on the rebound. it’s not less “black”-more like less crime, improving neighborhoods, increased vibrancy and even the schools are getting better.

Detroit is far more white than 10 yrs ship white mayor also plus Dan Gilbert pumping millions into downtown.
If there was some plan to wrest the water system away, it's because the city proved through successive administrations it could not operate the water system.
As for Detroit, the census numbers don't lie. What happened is although whites fled Detroit, downtown became a little whiter. Some of it is because property values fell so low the law of supply and demand started working. Small businesses opened up downtown and people moved there as well. Quicken loans made a HUGE commitment to downtown as well.
The Receiver made strides but Detroit took a major step forward when it elected a former executive. The opponent was the community activist type. You know the kind, long on words, little on ideas

The receivership of the city's water system is a success. If we want the rest of the city's basic functions to operate in a competent manner, the solution is for the city to go into Chapter 12 bankruptcy. If memory serves me correctly, Birmingham, Alabama did this several years ago. By placing the city under the control of a bankruptcy trustee, the racial policies that are endemic now will be eliminated.

The fact that people in that room were audibly agreeing with his comments goes to show how much he surrounds himself with "yes" men and women. It's clear that his priorities are entirely out of whack if he would rather continue to provide the citizens of Jackson with subpar water, streets and safety than let a group that happens to have members of another race step in to help. I don’t like going here, but the mayor’s comments make it necessary. Jackson MS has had majority black leadership for I believe the last 27 years. How can you continue to blame white people for all of Jackson’s problems.
