Board Expels Gun-Totin' Supervisor

Is there something in the water in District 2 of Hinds County?

District 2 Supervisor Anthony Smith was expelled from today's Board of Supervisors meeting after Sheriff Tyree Jones caught him with a gun during the meeting.  Supervisors Smith and Deborah Dixon got into a heated argument as the Supervisors are so often prone to do.  Board President Robert Graham called a recess so everyone could cool down.

Sheriff Jones observed Smith was strapped when his coat moved.  The Sheriff asked the Supervisor if he had a permit.  Smith replied he did not have one.  The Sheriff escorted the Supervisor to his vehicle.  The gun was never removed from the holster. President Graham expelled Smith from the remainder of the meeting so

Unless the law has changed, you can carry in a courthouse only if you have an enhanced carry permit. This is a step above the normal carry permit, but normal permits have a few exclusions such as courtrooms, police stations, and yes courthouses. The law says even a normal permit is not required for citizens to carry in most places, but if he didn't have a permit at all he probably should get one and take the enhanced course.

12:45. Try reading first before commenting? He said he didn’t have a permit.

1:05 follow your own advice. He noted that in his comment but the point was he would need a permit and it should be upgraded to enhanced carry.

I spoke wth a high ranking person in the Department of Safety a year or so ago concerning Mississippi’s “Open Carry” law. I was told there were 2 requirements for carrying a gun personally on your body without a concealed permit. (1) the gun has to be in a holster or sheath, AND (2) the firearm has to be at least partially visible. All other situations require a concealed permit.

From the post, it seems the pistol was in a holster, but was not partially visible. In this situation, both requirements were not met and therefore a concealed permit would be required.

Hinds County Courthouse does not "recognize" the Enhanced CWP...at least that's what the guard at the metal detector told me when I needed to access the 2nd floor (2023). He mentioned the rule was being challenged in a lawsuit but I have no idea its outcome.

Who among you, knowing Jackson the way it is, blames the man for carrying?

All I can say is a supervisor never knows when he might need to shoot a fellow member of the board. Perfectly understandable why he was carrying heat.

I thought everyone in Hinds County above the age of 12 carried.

Interesting. That building serves as a courthouse, but also the BOS meeting room and offices, plus the clerks office and the tax assessor and tax collector’s office. Not sure the if any single law covers all of those, as opposed to banning firearms in the “courtroom,” which is understandable. There’s a lot of misunderstanding of the concealed carry law and it is equally misunderstood by both sides.

so the barney fifes that protect the courthouse can have guns, but a private citizen cannot?

Laws? In Jackson and Hinds? It's also against the law to drink/smoke dope and drive, but some on the Jackson City Council don't follow those either.

I'm not a fan of Jackson and I don't. I would recommend him to get his enhanced carry license though. It'll let him carry not only in this state but other states that have reciprocal carry deals.

1:41 - 'A year or so ago', partly visible was the law. That changed, 'a year or so ago'.

Let's play a game of 'what if'. What if the high Sherf had noticed that make-believe Leftenant Robert Graham had been strapped? Would anything have been said?

Anonymous said...

He claimed that it wasn't loaded and that he didn't realize that he had it on him.

Bwa ha ha ha ha ha.

Yes, it put it in his car. Unsecured?

He is either lying or stupid, or both.

The real question is why wasn't the supervisor arrested or cited for breaking the law?

3:47 You gott'a trust me here. Citizens bringing guns into a courthouse would be a bad idea.

Go back and watch Gunsmoke. Matt made the guys leave their guns outside when court was held in the Longbranch. Miss Kitty never objected. Of course, I guess she was kind of fond of Matt's gun.

Tyree was actually in town today? Shocking….

@4:37 PM - That was a stupid provision. In Florida it's a crime if a firearm "prints," i.e. bulges out, etc.

Anonymous said...

@ 9:12 - Florida law is irrelevant, even though your statement is not true. Florida law grants permitless carry rights (and bulge is not mentioned).

You do realize this is about the politics of Hinds County. What is going on with the supervisor and the sheriff?

I would really like to know what kind of business did Anthony (Tony)Smith own in Memphis. This supervisor is very unprofessional, lack of integrity and loves to keep up mess between the ladies on the board. This is unacceptable to bring a gun in a county meeting. I would rather have Archie back anyway. Archie knew what he was talking aboutin the meeting. Yes it was little unprofessional due to those temper tantrums.Tony Smith couldn't had a very professional company in Memphis with all the back stabbing going in the meeting. I wander why it's a fool in every situation. Watch and see the
what's next for him. Expelled for goid

Jackson city council are supposed to be so smart. They are so stupid in not moving the IT equipment. Not moving it will cause day to day operations to be interrupted. They are sitting up there arguing about getting access to financial information. One council person likes to drink and drive while one often drives by folks smoking marijuana to say it got in her clothes...SMH

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
