Jackson Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba and JPD Chief James Davis are holding a press conference right now. The presser is streamed below. This post will be edited to included more information as it becomes available.
* Chief James Davis announced his retirement. Mayor Lumumba bragged about the Chief's "establishment of a real time crime center" as police staffing levels shrink. He lauded his chief for having more police recruit classes than any other chief.
* Chief Davis said "we are in a better position to see crime reduction in our city."
* Hizzoner said Deputy Chief Joseph Wade will assume the position of Interim Chief of Police. State law limits the interim appointment to 90 days.
* Mayor Lumumba did not commit to conducting a national search for a new police chief when WAPT's Ross Adams asked if he would do so.
Kingfish note: Oddly enough, there was no mention of record murder rates over the last three years.

Who in their right mind would want that gig??
It won't matter who the Chief is. Chokwe will insure that policing in Jackson is given the lowest priority. The officers know it. That's why they are leaving.
And the person to his left should be in jail.
Anyone else catch the Mayor completely deflecting the direct question of whether or not his office asked the Chief to resign by throwing that joke in there?
"We are in a better position to see crime in our city."
“Chief Davis said "we are in a better position to see crime reduction in our city."
🤣🤣🤣🤣 what?!? LOL 🤣🤣🤣
He was forced to retire. Im sitting here with an officer right now.
@10:57 AM on the other thread = 100%
"One of the problems of being a politically appointed “yes man” to the emperor, is the yes man takes the fall when all he has done is what he was told but the emperor needs a scape goat…."
Look for Davis to eventually take a position with Capitol Police.
Chief Davis seemed like a nice guy with average (at best) leadership skills. However, he was in a no win situation ---inadequate manpower, inadequate resources, and a mayoral crime fighting philosophy that appeared to stymie what could be effective policing. One that appeared to favor criminals vs victims. Nice public relations spin by the mayor on his "stepping down". I wish him Godspeed in his future endeavors. And may God help his replacement.
Is the vacancy posted on "Indeed?" Right?
It is going to be hard to find a chief that can continue to lead in the city with the highest murder rate in the country. It is hard to speculate how the city ranks in other categories since the city does not publicly post those numbers.
Real Time Crime Center - Who has the IT contract? Have they ever solved a crime? Caught anyone?
Chief Davis was even too effective for Chowke. The replacement will be a real yes man, sycophant.
Do ya think that highly qualified white applicants will be considered? No? Probably not.
My bet is he won’t name a replacement until forced to do so by a court.
Didn't the police chief & the mayor have a public dispute a couple of months ago over the circumstances surrounding an officer-involved shooting - or something similar? From that point on, it was clear the police chief was on his way out, since residents are only allowed to hear nothing but the mayor's version of everything. Heil Lumumba!
My baloney has a first name; it's m-a-y-o-r. My baloney has a second name; it's A-n-t-a-r . . .
Yeah I know I dated myself.
The retiring chief's salary/benefits savings will be diverted to... (take your pick).
Hire the Clarksdale Chief of Police.
He is hiring Bo away from Capital Police to run the show.
May 19th Fools!!!
My bet is he takes FOREVER to name someone while crime and officer morale sink lower than it is now. When he does hire someone, they will be part of the collective and board with pushing the Kush and total destruction of Jackson.

Lol. LMAO even.
What good has the "real time crime center" really done ? Has it prevented any crime ? Has it helped solve any crime ?
"He lauded the chief for having more police recruit classes than any other chief"....But yet in the same discussion he, to the contrary, notes that staffing levels have shrunk. Jackson still has over a hundred less officers than it needs. 911 calls, like the one made for the recent Brecon Drive robbery, take 35 minutes or more for someone to show up due to the lack of avaialable officers.
"We are in a better position to see crime reduction in our city"...Do what ? Seriously ? You just admitted the staffing shortages and lack of officers. Crime stats have increased, not decreased.
Mayor, quit lying and spend more time trying (to actually do your job).
Jackson don’t need no police. Defund the police and hire social workers to prevent crime.
Nobody works for Jackson any more. Just think of all that money accumulating in the banks. Obviously, since there is no money being paid out, taxes will be reduced.
Henifin.
@3:03 PM Do like the LAPD - they are going to hire unarmed civilians to do traffic enforcement.
Can these friggin' libtard progressives not visualize the unintended consequences?
Addition by subtraction, good riddance bozo.
It’s not down 100. It’s down 100 from 3 years ago. It’s half the size it has been in the past and is supposed to be.
The city needs Eastside High Principal Joe Clark and his bat as next chief.
FREE MR. CLARK! FREE MR. CLARK! FREE MR. CLARK! FREE MR. CLARK! FREE MR. CLARK! FREE MR. CLARK! FREE MR. CLARK! FREE MR. CLARK! FREE MR. CLARK! FREE MR. CLARK!
Glad #1020 passed. Hope it can be helpful since JPD is basically not a thing anymore.
I swear you must just reject comments for the hell of it. Makes zero sense. So long boomer blog
I cannot and will not blame the chief for the problems of fighting crime in Jackson. There is not enough time nor space to explain why.
So long boomer blog
LMAO. You won't be missed. You'll have more time now for that rope sanding hobby. Hope the tantrum feels good.
I need my high four. I really don't want to do anything. I don't want people to hold me accountable or expect very much.
Where do I send my resume?
@6:26pm - Already got mines
Jacktown is okay. Other than the roads are impassable, there is no potable water, highest “murder rate” in the country, undriveable streets, absolutely ZERO protection. I live in a “Gated community” where I have to use a security code to enter my home.. Is there any chance that I can sale my property?
Marshand Crisler will be appointed to be the new Chief of Police. Marshand will drop his run for Sheriff. That is the rumor I made up. Feel free to spread it around because you know Marshand is an expert at spreading things around.
9:36 I don’t think the good pastor that advises/ pulls Marshand Crisler strings will want to bump heads with the Mayor every single day.
Marshand wants that ultimate power gravy job held by High High Sheriff
So Henifin gets the police dept too?
We now have 224 officers. Budget is 400.
@8:00 PM - Be sure to have your realtor include in the listing "there is only a perception of crime." Right?
Chief Davis won’t have to deal with blatant ignorance anymore can you say, HIGH FOUR!
@8:00pm..not sure if you can sale it…guess you could sell it though…sail on moron
There may be 224 officers, but many of them aren't on patrol. They seem to be top heavy with REMFs and possibly even a lot of "no show" officers. FOC? (Friends of Chowke).
Too bad it’s not Antar forced to wear a body camera. All day. Every day.
@11:44AM, I prefer “we’re in a better position to see reduced crime,” meaning we see very little crime.
How many Chiefs has Jackson had in the past thirty years? My guess is the number of mayors times 2.
Most have been PERS vested at departure. The two I recall most fondly were the JSU traffic cop and the guy who took his subordinate, friend-girl shopping for office furniture in Arkansas.
2:59 A better question is how many police chiefs has the city had since Lumumba was first elected in 2016?
Joseph Wade is the fourth Chief. Lee Vance Anthony Moore James Davis. Lumumba has to let Wade be the Chief and step out of the Police department. JPD has been destroyed over the last five years. Wade is in the unenviable position to try to fix it. He can't do it with a meddling Mayor.
