Rankin County Sheriff Bryan Bailey issued the following statement.
Today at approximately 2:00 p.m. Rankin County Criminal Interdiction Deputy Tony Shack was on routine patrol on Interstate 20. Deputy Shack was driving eastbound around mile marker 62 on Interstate 20, when he drove up on an accident that had just occurred. It appeared an 18 wheeler and a passenger vehicle had crashed and were off the shoulder of the road in a wooded area. The 18 wheeler cab was fully engulfed in flames and the fire was spreading to the trailer. Deputy Shack ran to the passenger vehicle where heard a child screaming. Deputy Shack located the child near the passenger vehicle behind a downed tree. Deputy Shack picked up the child and removed him from where the fire was. The child’s mother and father were able to extract themselves from their vehicle and followed Deputy Shack to safety.
The couple advised Deputy Shack that the driver of the commercial vehicle appeared to be deceased and was laying on the ground near his vehicle. Deputy Shack went to the commercial vehicle where he saw the driver laying on the ground with his back on fire. Ignoring the danger, Deputy Shack immediately went to the victim and removed him from the flames. Deputy Shack then extinguished the flames on the victim and rendered first aid.
Additional Rankin County Deputies along with Pelahatchie Police Department, MHP, Rankin EOC, Pelahatchie Fire Department, Walters Fire Department and Pafford Ambulance Service responded to the scene. All of the accident victims were transported to area hospitals. The Mississippi Highway Patrol is investigating the accident.
We are extremely fortunate and very proud to have brave and quick thinking deputies like Tony Shack serving the citizens of Rankin County and the State of Mississippi.

Hero status; period.
Good job, and for those who don't know, it's "lying" on the ground, not "laying" on the ground.
Spelling assistant out.
+1 @ 7:35. I don't think RCSD or anyone else checks for English competency anymore.
Some LEOs still run toward the danger.
7:59 AM The Grammar Nazi strikes again.
@10:20 AM - the "anti-grammar" Nazi shows his ugly head, and likely didn't know the difference between laying and lying. He likely also pens "I could care less," vs. "I couldn't care less."
The RCSD guy is an absolute hero.
The people commenting here about grammar are wasting oxygen.
Not to take away from his actions, the deputy did nothing more than any number of other fine citizens would have done or have done in the past.
Got to admire spellings police I guess. Its what you do when you have nothing else to add to the conversation. They are as useful as a wet fart. They are both crappy, but they keep us honest.
Did his job. A thankless one.
